I Returned Home Five Days Early and Found My Mother’s Friend in My Bed — But I Froze When I Saw My Mother’s Face

That evening, my mother called the police and reported that a strange man had broken into her own house, although that man had spent his childhood in this house.

I stood on the middle step of the staircase, gripping the handle of my bag so tightly that my fingers had turned white. My mother’s voice came from below.

“You should not have been home, Noah. You should not have come back at all.”

Sophia stood in front of her. Her hair was tied up wet, and she was wearing my old sports shirt over her shoulders. On the lower edge of the shirt, the school team’s number, seven, which I had embroidered with my own hands years ago, was still visible.

“This is my house,” I said.

My mother smiled coldly.

“No. It isn’t anymore.”

I had planned returning five days early as a surprise. An exam at the university was canceled, a colleague took over my shift at work, and I bought an evening train ticket. I told my mother nothing. I imagined how she would open the door, how surprised she would be, and then hug me.

When I entered the house, at first I found only silence. An unfamiliar pair of black high-heeled shoes stood in the hallway. From the upper floor I heard the rustling of book pages. The door to my room was half open.

There I found Sophia — my mother’s oldest friend, recently divorced, lying on my bed and wearing my old shirt.

“Your mother told me you wouldn’t return until next week,” she told me.

“She also didn’t tell me that you would stay here.”

Sophia closed the book and looked at me with a smile as if my coming into this house was not an unexpected event for her, but a pleasant one.

“Then we both knew an incomplete schedule.”

That night we had dinner together. Raindrops fell against the kitchen window, while a pot of pasta quietly bubbled on the stove. Sophia opened the cabinets as if she had never left the house.

“How do you feel after the divorce?” I asked.

She curled a finger around the wineglass.

“As if I had been in a room closed for a long time, and now I opened a window for the first time.”

“Isn’t being alone difficult?”

“It is. But I was more afraid that I would remain with that person again.”

Then she asked about my personal life. When I told her that I did not have a serious relationship, I noticed such relief on her face that I did not want to see it.

“You are no longer a boy,” she told me quietly.

“Is that supposed to be a compliment?”

“It is a warning.”

At midnight we stood by the stairs. An old thread had come loose from her shirt. I reached out my hand, but did not dare touch it.

“Are you glad that you came back early?” she asked me.

“More than I thought.”

Sophia lowered her eyes.

The next morning she came into the kitchen wearing my shirt again. This time, however, she was no longer smiling.

“Noah, before your mother returns, I have to ask you one thing.”

“What?”

She placed a small wooden key holder on the table. It resembled a train ticket from childhood, with a star cut out in the middle. My father had given me this object, and I had thought it lost for years.

“Where did you find this?” I asked.

Sophia looked toward the door.

“In your mother’s study. In the drawer where papers signed in your name are kept.”

The door opened at that very moment. Diana returned home, a smile on her face, but holding the phone with which she had called the police. First she looked at Sophia, then at the key holder in my hand.

!!!  Meine Ex nahm mir Haus, Auto und Tochter, doch als sie später die Zeitschrift aufschlug, verschwand ihr Lächeln

Her face changed in one second.

“Who gave you that?” she asked.

Sophia slowly went to the hallway cabinet and took down a leather folder from the top. Diana reached toward it, but Sophia pressed the folder to her chest.

“You must listen first, Noah,” she told me and began opening the lock…

Sophia’s fingers stopped on the lock when Diana stepped onto the first stair.

“This is my house and my documents,” my mother said. “Put the folder down.”

“Your house?” Sophia smiled bitterly. “You said those words that day too, when you presented the power of attorney signed in Noah’s name.”

The air froze.

“What power of attorney?” I asked.

Diana turned her eyes toward me.

“Sophia is in a very bad state after the divorce. She sees conspiracies in everything.”

“Do not humiliate me, Diana,” Sophia replied. “You always did this when the truth knocked at the door.”

We moved into the kitchen. The wall clock showed eight, although for me time seemed to have stopped. A glass of water stood on the table, and I was trembling so strongly that the water spilled over the edges.

“Mother, tell me what is happening.”

“Nothing is happening. You came back tired from the university, and this woman is confusing your mind.”

“Then why was my lost key holder in your study?”

Diana looked away.

“Because I was keeping your things.”

“Along with my things, did you keep my signature too?”

Sophia opened the folder. There were several copies inside, but she handed me none of them.

“First you must know why I stayed here,” she told me. “Repairing my apartment was only an excuse. Diana asked me to leave the house while she completed the sale procedure.”

“Which house?”

“This house.”

My mother struck the chair with her hand.

“The house is mine!”

“Half is yours,” Sophia answered. “The other half is in your son’s name, because his father left it that way in the will.”

I knew this. After my father’s death, the lawyer told me that part of the house had been left to me. However, my mother told me it was only a formal entry and that when I finished my studies, we would decide everything together.

“Why did you want to sell it?” I asked.

Diana’s voice softened.

“I owe money for your studies. Selling the house would help both of us.”

“My study money has already been paid.”

Sophia took a phone out of her bag.

“That is exactly why you should listen to this.”

She placed the screen on the table. In the recording, my mother’s voice could be heard, only more tired and severe.

“Noah will not check anything. I will make him sign when he comes. If he resists me, I will tell him that his father’s debt remained.”

The recording stopped.

My mother covered her face with her hand.

“You recorded this illegally.”

“In your own study, when I was looking for my things. I did not have a camera. The phone was lying on the table.”

“This proves nothing,” Diana shouted.

Sophia took out a second sheet.

“An expert has already compared the signatures. Noah’s signature on the paper is forged.”

I looked at the paper. The letters truly resembled mine, but some invisible coldness came over me. Since childhood I had known that my mother did everything for me. Now for the first time I thought that perhaps she had been protecting her own life in my name.

“Who helped you?” I asked.

Diana looked at Sophia.

“Are you taking her side against me?”

“I am standing beside Noah.”

My mother came closer to me and put a hand on my shoulder.

!!!  Ich gab meine Arbeit für drei Kinder auf, doch beim Dorffest verstummte plötzlich jeder Spott, als meine Frau das Mikrofon nahm

“Son, you barely know her. Her husband left her, and now she is punishing everyone.”

Sophia’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained firm.

“I am punishing no one. I simply no longer intend to cover Diana’s lies.”

Then she took out a small flash drive hidden at the bottom of the folder.

“This is the last piece of evidence,” she said. “But you must see it where everything began.”

“Where?” I asked.

Sophia took my old key holder in her hand and looked at the kitchen floor.

“In your father’s workshop. The room your mother has kept locked for ten years.”

Diana suddenly locked the door.

“No one can enter there.”

Sophia looked at her.

“I have already entered.”

The house seemed to become narrower. Wind rose behind the windows, and a metal sign hanging in the yard struck against the wall.

Diana took out her phone.

“If you enter this room, I will call the police.”

“Call them,” I said.

For the first time my mother looked at me as if I were not her son, but an opponent.

Sophia took out a key hidden at the end of the hallway. The door opened after years, and the smell of dust, oil, and old wood came out.

My father’s tools still lay on the table. On the wall hung one drawing — from my childhood, in which my mother, father, and I stood in front of a train.

Sophia slipped her hand behind the drawing.

“Noah, your father left this for me. Before we open it, you must know that its contents will connect everything to your mother…”

At that moment a heavy удар sounded from outside the room…

A second удар followed. The door lock shook, and dust fell from the ceiling.

“The police have come,” Diana whispered.

“Did you call them yourself?” I asked.

“Because you broke into my house.”

Sophia took a large envelope from behind the drawing. It was no longer white; its edges had yellowed, and my name was written on it in my father’s handwriting.

They knocked on the door again.

“Open the door!” a man’s voice shouted.

Sophia handed the envelope to me.

“Now you decide.”

My mother stepped in front of me.

“Do not open it.”

“Why?”

“Because your father was ill at the end and did not know what he was doing.”

That answer was enough.

I opened the envelope. Inside were three sheets, a small memory card, and a copy certified with a notary’s seal. The very first sentence took my breath away: my father had transferred his share of the house not to me, but into an independent trust account, and my mother had the right to use it only with my consent.

The second sheet said that my father suspected Diana of debts and wanted money never to be given to her. He wrote in the letter that if my mother ever tried to sell the house or use my signature, Sophia should be contacted.

“Why you?” I asked Sophia.

She lowered her eyes.

“Because your father knew that I was the only one who was not afraid of your mother.”

Diana leaned against the wall. The color had left her face.

“This is impossible. He never said this.”

Sophia inserted the memory card into an old device. In a few seconds my father’s voice sounded in the room.

“Noah, if you are listening to this, you are probably already grown. I wanted you to choose everything yourself. I love your mother, but when she is afraid, she can make decisions that hurt others. Do not sign anything in your name until you speak to an independent lawyer.”

My knees became heavy.

My mother shook her head.

!!!  Mia figlia mi cacciò dalla casa che avevo costruito con mio marito e mi schiaffeggiò davanti alla porta, ma al cimitero trovai una busta grigia che poteva distruggere tutto ciò che aveva fatto

“This is not the complete recording.”

“It is complete,” I said.

“I fought for you!”

“And you made a forged document in my name?”

Sophia took out a sheet.

“Here is the expert’s conclusion. The signature was copied from your father’s old document. We also have bank statements showing that she has already received the advance for the sale of the house.”

My mother suddenly lunged toward me.

“Noah, listen to me. I needed this money for debts. I would have returned everything to you.”

“How much?”

She could not answer.

“How much, Mother?”

Sophia said quietly:

“Almost your entire inheritance.”

Outside, the siren of a police car sounded. Diana looked toward the door, then toward me.

“Sophia planned everything. She wants the house.”

Sophia laughed, but the laughter resembled pain.

“I do not want your house. I only want you to stop using people at least once.”

The door opened. Two investigators and a representative of the notary entered. With them was Marco, a lawyer I knew from the university and to whom Sophia had contacted in advance.

“Noah, before you sign anything, please read this,” he told me.

He gave me a document that stopped the sale process of the house and protected the money remaining in my account.

Diana lowered her hands.

“You believed strangers and not your mother.”

I looked at her for a long time.

“For the first time, I believed myself.”

Then Sophia’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and her face changed.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“Your father’s old accountant.”

She answered. She listened for several seconds, then went to the window.

“Tell me this is not true.”

Everyone in the room fell silent.

Sophia pressed the phone to her ear.

“What did you discover?”

Her gaze slowly moved toward Diana.

“Noah, they found another transfer from your father’s accounts. The money disappeared on the day he was lying in the hospital.”

Diana hid her face in her hands.

“That is something else.”

Marco closed the window.

“How much was it?” he asked the accountant.

Sophia listened silently, then slowly lowered the phone.

“The money went to the same account to which the house advance went.”

I looked at my mother. Now I knew that the heaviest secret was hidden not in the letter, but in her silence.

And that night I still did not know that Diana’s missing money was only the beginning — the next morning an investigator who came to her house would arrive with news none of us could have been prepared to hear…
