After the divorce, my ex-husband told me that I had lost the company too, but he turned pale when he saw my calm smile

I was still holding the divorce certificate when my former husband mocked me with his lover on the steps of the Manhattan courthouse and told me that I had lost not only my husband, but the entire company.

Dominic Vance stood several steps away from me, in a perfectly tailored dark suit. Beside him stood Natalie Crane, with a blue leather bag hanging from her shoulder. I recognized that bag immediately. Three months earlier, exactly this item had been charged to Crestwood Holdings’ corporate account as a “client appreciation gift.”

Natalie caught my gaze and wrapped her fingers more tightly around the bag’s handle.

“You look tired, Audrey,” she told me in a sweet voice.

Dominic laughed. Once, that laugh had made me feel safe. That day it sounded like a spoon falling onto empty metal.

“At least now we can stop deceiving ourselves,” he said.

“One of us should have stopped deceiving themselves a long time ago,” I answered.

Natalie’s smile immediately disappeared.

Dominic came closer to me and lowered his voice.

“You still think no one can touch you. That arrogance is exactly what ruined our marriage. For five years, I have run Crestwood. Your father played golf while the directors followed my orders. My mother has the board in her pocket, and my cousin controls procurement. We have our people in every department.”

He tapped the divorce papers with his finger.

“All you have left is a cash settlement. You will never come near the company again.”

Natalie gave a quiet chuckle.

“The little princess finally found out that the castle was never hers.”

For years I had noticed the warnings: secret late-night meetings, strange transfers, accounts in foreign countries, employees who suddenly disappeared. I saw everything, but convinced myself that it was family tension and not a network of betrayal.

Dominic took my silence for ignorance.

It would be his most expensive mistake.

“You did not win anything,” I told Natalie. “You simply picked up the trash that I left beside the garbage can.”

Natalie’s cheeks flushed. Dominic grabbed her by the arm before she could answer me.

“Enjoy your little sum and do not interfere in the business of the great.”

I turned away from them. I put the divorce documents into my bag and ran down the courthouse steps. The noise of the city remained muffled inside the car with the glass windows.

I had no tears. No anger either.

Only relief.

I called my father. He answered on the first ring.

“Dad, I was wrong about him,” I said.

After a long silence, he answered calmly:

“I know.”

“Dominic says his family controls the company.”

“That is true,” he said. “But flies can never own a house. They only hide in the walls.”

His voice suddenly changed. The warm father disappeared somewhere, and a cold, precise executive returned in his place.

“I have been waiting for this call for years. Tell me, Audrey, what do you want to happen?”

I looked at the clock. Fifteen minutes remained until two.

“Gather Human Resources on the first floor. Put security officers at every entrance. Disable Dominic’s pass. Cancel all the Vance family’s cards.”

My father laughed quietly.

“Come home, chief executive officer. I will be waiting for you upstairs.”

Crestwood’s glass facade appeared in the car window. In my bag, my fingers closed around an ivory-colored, small access card. My father had given me that card in childhood, and my initials were engraved on it.

“No,” I said. “I am not going upstairs yet.”

I got out of the car and entered through the building’s revolving door. I did not need his office to defeat Dominic. I had to start from the ground up.

Exactly at two o’clock, I reached the door of the procurement department. Inside, my cousin Marcus was throwing a golf ball. He raised his head, saw me, and smiled.

“Audrey? Where are your tears?”

I did not answer him. I only put a folder full of pages marked with heavy red tabs on his glass desk. Two security officers stopped behind me.

Marcus’s smile slowly disappeared.

I opened the folder’s clasp and reached toward the first sheet…

I placed the first sheet on the desk.

“Three shell companies, prices increased fourfold, and money transferred to your personal accounts,” I told Marcus.

“This is nonsense,” he jumped up. “Dominic knows everything.”

“That is exactly why we are starting here.”

The security officers blocked his way. Marcus grabbed for his phone, but its screen was already locked.

“Audrey, you do not understand who you are fighting!”

“I understand very well.”

Within forty-five minutes he had been escorted out of the building. People looked at me silently, as if they were seeing my real face for the first time.

I thought everything was going according to my plan.

Then the phone lit up.

It was my father.

That firmness was no longer in his voice.

“Audrey… stop. We have walked into a trap.”

“What did you say?”

“Marcus was only bait. Someone signed the transfers in your name. Now the board members are saying that you returned to the company to destroy the evidence.”

I saw my reflection on the glass wall. I was still holding the ivory-colored access card, the childhood gift that had meant protection all my life.

But at that moment I thought for the first time that perhaps this card could also be used against me.

“Dad, who called you?”

Before he answered, an unfamiliar woman’s voice sounded on the line.

“Audrey, if you want to know who was running all of this, come alone to the archive room. And trust no one…”

The archive room’s door was on the lower floor, behind the old accounting department. It was twenty minutes past four in the evening when I entered. The light flickered, and the air smelled of dust and burnt paper.

My father was standing at the table. Beside him sat our chief auditor, Elena Morel, and her hands were trembling.

“Who is this woman?” I asked.

“She is the only person who kept everything,” my father told me.

Elena placed a black folder on the table.

“Dominic was not only stealing money,” she said. “He was preparing the company’s gradual transfer. The shell companies belonged to his mother, while Marcus was receiving the procurement contracts. But the final blow was intended for you.”

“For me?”

Elena turned on a small voice recorder. Dominic’s voice sounded in the room.

“Audrey will sign everything. If she refuses, we will show the accounts that we ran in her name. Then everyone will think that she stole the money.”

My knees weakened.

The second voice was Victoria’s, Dominic’s mother’s.

“When she divorces, she will also be morally destroyed. The board will no longer follow her.”

Elena turned off the recorder.

“I hid this recording and the bank documents while you were in court. But in the morning someone took all the copies from the archive. Only this one remained.”

My father placed his hand on my shoulder.

“The trap was that Dominic needed you to return. He wanted you to make a move emotionally and sign the transfers.”

“That is why Marcus was waiting for me here,” I whispered.

“Yes. He knew your appearance would be recorded on the cameras.”

!!!  I only asked him to wash the dishes during my pregnancy, but my mother-in-law stormed into the house and my husband’s face suddenly changed

At that moment, footsteps sounded from the corridor. The door opened and the head of security looked in.

“Audrey, bad news. The emergency board meeting has already started. Dominic says that you and your father seized the company by force.”

The phone rang again. An unknown number was on the screen.

“Do not answer,” my father said.

But the call ended and a voice message arrived immediately. I played it.

Dominic’s voice was calm, almost happy.

“If you think that one recording will save me, you are wrong. You still do not know in whose name the controlling stake in the company is registered. Tomorrow morning it will be transferred to another owner.”

My father’s face turned pale.

“That is impossible,” he said.

Elena took out the last sheet from the folder and suddenly froze.

“It is possible,” she whispered. “The signature is in your name.”

I looked at the sheet. My name was there, an exact copy of my signature, and the transfer date was the day when I was choosing a dress for the wedding.

Then I understood: Dominic did not want to destroy me. He wanted me to set the whole world against myself.

And the most dangerous thing was that he still had access to a person who had better access to my signature than anyone else…
