Part 4 — My family publicly demanded my house, but when I took one step against them, Lea’s smile disappeared

The sound of sirens entered through the windows, and everyone in the room looked toward them at the same time.

Lea stepped back.

Max put his phone in his pocket.

“This was not our plan,” he said.

Lea quickly turned toward him.

“Now be quiet.”

“You told me we would transfer the money only temporarily.”

“Be quiet, Max!”

Nika was already speaking on the phone.

“Yes, the amount is confirmed. Yes, both of them are here.”

Lea came toward me.

“Blake, please think. If you tell the police about this, Mother will not endure it.”

“Mother endured ten years while she remained silent against me.”

“We are family.”

“No. You were family even when I alone paid the rent, worked at night, and looked at photographs of your vacations. Even then you could have stood beside me.”

“You should not look at it this way.”

“That is exactly how I look at it.”

The door opened and two investigators entered. One of them showed Lea a document.

“Ms. Lea, we need to speak with you in connection with the illegal transfer of money and the creation of false documents.”

Lea immediately called Mother.

“Mother, tell them that this is a misunderstanding!”

Mother’s voice was so loud that everyone in the room heard it.

“Blake, please do not do this to the family.”

The investigator switched off the phone.

“Madam, you cannot speak with him now.”

For the first time I saw in Lea’s eyes not anger, but emptiness. She no longer controlled the room, the conversation, or even the story she had been telling for ten years.

Max called a lawyer.

“I need help. Right now.”

A few minutes later the lawyer answered the video call. Max quickly told him everything.

The lawyer did not speak for long.

“I cannot become involved in this case,” he said.

“What do you mean, you cannot become involved?”

“You yourself told me that you transferred the money to Lea’s account only temporarily. This conversation has already been recorded.”

Max froze.

“Even you will not defend us?”

“I cannot help a client cover up a lie.”

The call ended.

Then Nika played the audio again. This time Lea’s voice was heard not only by me. The investigators, Max, and Lea herself heard it too.

“Blake always becomes silent when everyone talks about him.”

Lea’s face changed.

For the first time she was listening to herself from the outside.

“I did not say it like that,” she whispered.

“You did,” Max answered.

“You were here too.”

“That is exactly why I know.”

Lea leaned against the wall. The bag fell from her hand, and a small golden key rolled onto the floor. It was the additional key to my villa, which years earlier I had given Mother, when I still believed that they respected my boundaries.

The investigator picked up the key.

“Does this belong to you?”

“No,” Lea said.

“Then why do you have it?”

Lea could not answer.

That evening the bank unlocked my accounts. The company returned to work, but part of the money had already been spent. The investigation established that Lea had used the money for legal expenses and to reserve an expensive hotel. Max confessed everything because he realized that silence would make him guilty too.

Mother and Father did not come to the police station.

They sent me only one letter.

“We did not know how far Lea would go.”

I stared at this sentence for a long time.

Then I realized that this was not an apology. It was another attempt to shift their responsibility onto someone else.

The next day I went to my old apartment.

In the bedroom there stood only one table, a monitor, and a bed. The only family photograph that I had kept for years was no longer hanging on the wall. I took the photograph down myself and carried it to the trash bin.

In the kitchen the washing machines were still humming.

But this time their sound no longer made me feel that I was locked somewhere.

It was simply a sound.

Three weeks later I arrived at the villa in the Bahamas. The sea was calm in the morning. While I was working on the windowsill, a small lizard was warming itself in the sun, while the local caretaker, Joseph, collected leaves fallen from the palms in the yard.

“Everything is in its place, Mr. Blake,” he told me.

“For the first time I really think so.”

Alisa came to visit me for several days. She wrote a new version of the article, this time not about the villa, but about the boundaries that a person learns late, but still learns.

We were sitting on the terrace when she asked me:

“Do you no longer speak with your family?”

“I sometimes answer Mother.”

“And Lea?”

“No.”

“Do you not miss her?”

I looked toward the sea.

“I miss the sister I thought I had.”

Alisa lowered her head.

“That is the most painful answer.”

“But also the most truthful.”

Months passed.

My company grew. I hired two new employees, and moved the office to a small, bright building where the smell of coffee stood in the mornings and the street trees could be seen from the window. I was no longer working to prove something to anyone.

I was working because I liked it.

On Sundays I walked along the villa’s shore. Sometimes Joseph’s little daughter, Mia, came to me and drew houses in the sand. One day she drew a picture of my villa: large windows, the sea, and a little man by the door.

“That is you,” she told me.

“Why am I outside?”

“Because you are no longer afraid inside.”

The child’s words affected me more strongly than any court decision.

Lea’s case finally reached court. She admitted creating the false document and transferring the money. Max received a conditional agreement because he helped the investigation. Lea had to return the money and make a public apology to society.

I did not go to the hearing.

I did not need her humiliation in order to believe my own truth.

Mother called me after the trial.

“Lea is in a very bad condition.”

“I understand.”

“Maybe you should meet her at least once.”

“No.”

“She is your sister.”

“And I was her brother even when she went against me.”

Mother remained silent.

“You have changed very much, Blake.”

!!!  Part 4 — On Grandma’s Birthday, Mom Seated Me at the Employees’ Table, but One Stranger’s Call Erased Her Smile

“No, Mother. I simply am not behaving for the first time the way you want.”

The call ended.

At the beginning of winter I received a letter from Lea. It was short.

“Can I come to the villa for one week? I want to fix everything.”

I read the letter several times.

Then I calmly wrote to her:

“Your fixing no longer needs my house. I wish you to find a place where you do not avoid responsibility for yourself.”

After sending it, I put the phone down.

I was not trembling.

I was not crying.

Simply, for the first time I was not trying to save her from the consequences she herself had chosen.

That evening Mia came again. She held a new drawing in her hands. This time the house had an open door, and a small golden key lay in the sand.

“Where does this lead?” I asked.

Mia shrugged.

“I do not know anymore. You decide.”

I looked at the drawing of the key and smiled.

The real key, which had fallen from Lea’s bag, lay on my desk. I would give it to no one anymore.

Outside, the sea was slowly receding, and moonlight fell on the sand.

For the first time, my door was truly mine.

Missed the beginning?
