On the third morning after Lea’s article was published, I received a call from the bank and was told that all my accounts had been temporarily frozen because someone had filed a fraud complaint against me.
I could not understand the words. I was holding a coffee cup, whose small crack along the rim reminded me every morning that I had built everything with my own hands. Washing machines hummed behind the window of my apartment, but at that moment the sound seemed to come from very far away.
“Who filed the complaint?” I asked.
“Unfortunately, we cannot reveal the details by telephone. Contact a lawyer.”
“Does my company continue working?”
“At this stage, transfers have been suspended.”
I put the phone on the table, and immediately Lea’s message appeared.
“I hope now you will at least understand that treating family this way has consequences.”
For several seconds I stared at the screen. Then for the first time I understood that this was no longer only an argument begun because of the villa. Lea needed my silence, but if she could not silence me, she would destroy my life.
That same evening I went to my parents. Mother opened the door immediately. Behind her, on the table, there were still the small plates from which I had eaten birthday cake in childhood. Father stood by the window and was stopping the pendulum of an old wooden clock.
“Why did you come?” Mother asked me as if I were the guilty one.
“The bank froze my accounts.”
Father lowered his eyes.
“Lea said that you were hiding something.”
“What?”
“That you bought the villa by a suspicious route. That you deceived your clients.”
I laughed, but the laughter immediately broke off.
“You believed this?”
Mother clasped her hands together.
“We do not know what is happening, Blake.”
“You do know. You simply have, for the first time, a reason to see me again as the person I always was in your eyes.”
At that moment Lea also entered. A white bag hung from her shoulder, and her face had an expression as if she had come to a funeral.
“Brother, we should not have been brought to this,” she said.
“You brought us to it.”
“I only told the truth.”
“Then why did you freeze my accounts?”
Her fingers clung to the clasp of the bag.
“Me? What does this have to do with me?”
“You will find out very soon.”
Lea looked at Father, then at Mother. Both stood silently. For the first time I saw on their faces the fear that had lived inside me for years.
That night, after returning home, I turned on the computer. I was checking messages received from a client when a letter came from Alisa.
“Blake, I did not show you the whole article. During the shooting at the villa, one conversation was accidentally recorded. I think you should see this.”
One file was attached to her letter. My finger tensed on the mouse. The file name contained Lea’s name, while a small button blinked on the screen: “Open”…
I opened the file, and for several seconds only the sound of wind could be heard. Then I recognized Lea’s voice.
“If Blake refuses, we will tell people that he did not earn his money through a clean route.”
Max answered:
“It will be difficult to prove that.”
“We do not need proof. Suspicion is enough. He always becomes silent when everyone talks about him.”
I stood up from the chair. My hands were trembling, but this time not from fear. For ten years I had been proving to myself that I was overly sensitive. Now their voice was sounding directly in my ears.
I called Alisa.
“Where was this recorded?”
“On the villa terrace. I had accidentally left the camera on while taking photographs.”
“Can you confirm that the recording has not been altered?”
“I have already contacted a specialist. Everything is saved.”
At that same moment I received a second message. This time from my company’s lawyer.
“Blake, come urgently. We have discovered where the complaint was sent from.”
I put on a jacket, took hold of the door handle, and transferred Alisa’s recording to my phone. As I was going down the stairs, Lea called me.
“If you spread this, you will destroy our family,” she told me.
“You destroyed the family, Lea.”
“You do not know what else I have.”
The call ended. When I arrived at the lawyer’s office, I saw a document placed on the table. My signature was on it, but I had never signed it…
I picked up the document. The corner of the paper was bent, as if someone had nervously unfolded it many times.
“This is a loan agreement,” my lawyer, Nika, told me. “It supposedly says that your company received a large amount four months ago and then fraudulently transferred it from clients.”
“That is not my signature.”
“I know. That is why I checked the digital trail.”
Nika turned the screen toward me. The document had been sent from my old email address, which only a few people had saved. Lea was among them.
“That still does not prove that she did it,” I said.
“No. But Alisa’s recording proves intent.”
Alisa joined us by video call. Tension could be seen on her face, and she held a small memory card in her hand.
“The audio was only part of it,” she said. “The camera also captured the car’s license plate from the terrace.”
On the screen was Max’s car, which had stopped at the villa gate at two o’clock at night. Then Max got out and approached the secured door with his phone.
“Did he enter here?” I asked.
“He did not only enter,” Nika said. “The recording shows how he photographed your desk and the password notebook.”
A coldness poured into my stomach. In that notebook I had the company’s backup codes.
At that moment the door opened and Lea entered. Max followed behind her. He held a black umbrella in his hand, despite the sun shining outside.
“This is all a misunderstanding,” Lea said.
Nika played the audio.
“Suspicion is enough. He always becomes silent when everyone talks about him.”
Her own voice sounded in the room.
The color disappeared from Lea’s face.
“This was recorded illegally,” Max whispered.
“You broke into my house, photographed the passwords, and created a false document,” I said. “And now you are talking to me about illegality?”
Lea grabbed the chair.
“I simply wanted you, just once, to see what it means to go against the family.”
“No. You wanted to make my life obey you.”
Nika placed a copy of the statement filed with the police on the table.
“The investigation will begin by evening. The bank freeze will be canceled because the complaint relies on false evidence.”
For the first time Max looked at Lea as if he could no longer recognize the woman standing beside him.
“You said it would only be rumors,” he told her.
Lea looked at him.
“Be quiet.”
“You said that nothing could be proved against Blake.”
His words fell into the room like a heavy stone. Everything became clear.
But before the police arrived, my phone rang. A bank notification appeared on the screen: a large amount had already been transferred from my company’s backup account.
Nika saw the number and turned pale.
“This transfer was made in the morning. Before we saw the recording.”
“Where did the money go?” I asked.
He looked at the screen.
“To an account registered in Lea’s name…”
And at that moment the siren of police cars sounded outside…
