His car blocked the road at my gate, but when I started the bulldozer, Vicky’s smile disappeared for the first time

Vicky’s shouting stopped when she saw the six-meter-deep ditch in front of my gate and realized that her white car was standing on the island.

She stood frozen by the roadside. She held a phone in her hand, and her sunglasses were pushed up onto her head. Her Lexus was unharmed, but a high strip of earth and a deep ditch surrounded it on both sides.

“What are you looking at?” I called.

“You did this!” she shouted.

“I carried out drainage work.”

“You trapped my car!”

“You left your car on my land.”

This time she found no answer. Her lips only tightened.

It was nine o’clock in the morning, and the June heat was already heating the stones. The yellow body of the bulldozer stood behind me, its engine switched off, but its metallic smell still hung in the air. My old leather work hat lay on the ground, and inside it could be seen the small letters embroidered years earlier by Margie—“K. D.” I always took this hat with me when I began heavy work.

Vicky brought the phone to her face.

“I’m calling the police.”

“You already called.”

“Then I’ll wait for the sheriff and have you explain all this.”

“Good. This time perhaps you’ll listen to the end.”

Seventeen minutes later Deputy Mateo Martinez arrived. He held a notebook, and a camera hung at his waist. Vicky immediately went toward him.

“Officer, this man deliberately buried my car.”

Martinez first looked at the car, then at the ditch, and finally at me.

“Mr. Dawson, do you have a permit for the work?”

“I do.”

“Did you touch the car?”

“No.”

“Can it be moved?”

“Only after this ditch is filled, which is not included in my plan.”

Vicky raised her voice.

“He admits that he deliberately left the car there!”

“I said that I worked according to the plan,” I answered calmly.

Martinez raised a hand.

“I ask the questions first.”

People from the neighboring settlement gathered across the road. Some were in robes, some in sports clothes. They filmed everything with their phones. Vicky’s husband, Todd, stood behind her, nervously interlacing his fingers.

“Todd, go and tell him to get the car out!” Vicky ordered.

Todd looked at the car.

“I think we should first find out whether that is possible.”

“I told you, go!”

Todd lowered his head but did not take a step.

I knew this was not only about the car. For eight months Vicky had been trying to fit my land into her own rules. First there were neighbors’ complaints, then false papers, then filming my workers, and finally a statement claiming that I had threatened her.

I had everything recorded.

Date. Time. Photograph. Witness. Damage.

Among them was the day when her car did not let a veterinarian enter through the gate and we barely managed to save a calf. I also had camera footage in which Vicky herself said that she would turn my ranch into a parking lot for Christmas.

But Martinez needed only the papers.

He took a brown folder from my hand. The folder contained the permit, the land survey, and old documents. Vicky immediately stepped forward.

“I should be the first to see what it shows.”

“No,” I told her.

Her fingers reached toward the folder. Martinez raised a hand in front of him.

“Mrs. Renner, step back.”

For the first time Vicky looked at me as if she had seen something new on my face.

At that moment she still did not know what was written on the folder’s last page. I knew, however, that after reading it neither her car nor the main road of her settlement would be the same as they had been that morning…

Martinez opened the folder. The wind stirred the papers, and I picked up my leather hat from the ground and clenched it in my fist.

“It says here that the work is permitted,” he said.

Vicky glanced at the paper.

“That means nothing. The road is for common use.”

“Not the road,” I answered. “This section is within the boundary of my parcel.”

Martinez unfolded the second drawing. Vicky leaned forward.

“Impossible.”

“That is exactly what the survey specialist told me before reading the document.”

Todd spoke for the first time.

“Vicky, maybe we should just wait for the lawyer?”

“Be quiet!”

At that moment her phone rang. She looked at the screen and her color changed.

“Who is it?” Todd asked.

Vicky ended the call.

“No one.”

Martinez put a finger on the lower corner of the drawing.

“An old easement is indicated here. What does that mean?”

“It means that the settlement’s main entrance road passes over a right recorded long ago,” I said.

Vicky smiled, but the smile was false and fragile.

“That is an old paper. Our developer checked everything.”

“Then call the developer,” I told her.

She looked at the phone again. This time the call came in by itself.

Vicky answered and listened silently for several seconds. Then the phone fell from her hand.

“What did they tell you?” Todd asked.

Vicky raised her head.

“The lawyer is on the way.”

But her voice no longer sounded like an order. Fear had appeared in it. And while we waited, a black automobile appeared from the direction of the road. The sign of the city legal service could be seen on its windshield…

The black automobile stopped at my gate, and Harlan Webb got out. He carried a large leather bag, and his face had the kind of calm that usually appears before bad news.

Vicky looked toward him.

“Where is Bradley?”

“He no longer represents your settlement,” Harlan replied.

Todd lowered his eyes.

“What does ‘no longer represents’ mean?”

Instead of answering, Harlan looked toward me.

“Caleb, it is time for them to read the last page.”

He took a certified copy from the bag and handed it to Martinez. The document was printed on yellowish paper, and traces of old seals could be seen along its edges.

“This is a 1951 land easement,” Harlan said. “The Dawson family owns the right to this sixty-meter strip. It includes water drainage, utilities, and the right to give consent for the entrance road.”

Vicky shook her head.

“You cannot use this to close the road.”

“No,” said Harlan. “But the developer had no right to build your settlement’s main road on this land without obtaining permission from the Dawsons or making an agreement with them.”

Martinez read the document from beginning to end.

“The seal is genuine.”

Todd looked at his wife.

“You knew this?”

“What was I supposed to know?”

“You said our road was fully protected.”

Vicky bit her lips.

Harlan took out another sheet.

“There is more. The developer’s internal correspondence says that they saw this easement. They advised their investor to resolve the matter ‘in the future, if necessary.’”

“That is forged!” Vicky shouted.

“No,” I said. “It is a copy obtained from their archive.”

The neighbors were silent. Several phones slowly lowered.

Vicky looked toward me.

“You planned everything in advance.”

“I worked the land. You chose where to park your car.”

“How will I get the car out?”

“By agreement.”

“And if I do not agree?”

Harlan answered calmly:

“Then the court will decide not only the matter of your car, but also the fee for using the road, the damages, and the false statements.”

Vicky turned her head toward him.

“Are you against me?”

“I am on the side of the documents.”

At that moment a call came to my phone. An unknown number was shown on the screen. I answered.

A man quietly said from the other side:

“Mr. Dawson, I am a former engineer of the company that built this settlement. You should know why they hid this easement…”
