I Was Fired Because of My Second Job, but After My Answer Melissa’s Smile Slowly Disappeared

At nine twelve in the morning, in the human resources department, I was told that six years of loyalty had to fit on one sheet of paper. There was such silence in the room, as if they were attending a funeral. Only the ticking of the wall clock could be heard, and the corner of my folder lying on the table scratched my fingers.

Melissa Crane crossed her hands over the folder and put on the smile she had learned for showing sympathy.

“Rachel, we greatly appreciate your contribution,” she said. “But working two jobs creates a professional conflict of interest.”

My supervisor Paul lowered his head. He did not even try to look me in the eyes.

“You should have told us,” he muttered.

I looked at the sheet. Twenty-three months of excellent evaluations. Fourteen days off when I had saved his failed projects. Three products whose success he was now writing into his own reports. They had compressed everything into one sentence: the employment relationship was being terminated immediately.

For six years they had convinced me that we were a family. A family that answered messages at night. A family that sacrificed birthdays for emergency meetings. A family that stood silently in the back corner of the conference room while Paul presented the work I had done under his own name.

But at the moment when they learned that I was creating something with my own laptop and my own money, loyalty suddenly became the most important rule.

“If you sign today, you will receive two weeks’ pay,” Melissa told me. “And we will also give you a neutral recommendation.”

“Two weeks after six years?” I asked.

Paul cleared his throat.

“Don’t make it complicated, Rachel.”

I almost laughed, but I tightened my fingers around the small object in my bag: a copper-colored card holder engraved with the crooked star drawn by my niece. She always told me that a star did not need perfect points to light the way.

I read the contract. First the confidentiality clause. Then the section on transferring rights to inventions. Finally, the paragraph according to which the company owned any program, process, research, tool, or business idea that I created during the period of employment—during working hours or outside them.

So that was what this was really about.

This was not care. Nor loyalty. It was ownership.

My second business was actually a platform that helped small clinics submit insurance claims correctly. I created it after my aunt lost her clinic because of rejected claims and incorrect coding. Large companies were not interested in this market. They said small clinics were not profitable enough.

I looked at Melissa and did not sign.

“You can fire me,” I said calmly, “but you cannot claim ownership of something I did not create on your systems, on your time, or with your money.”

Her smile wavered slightly.

“Don’t play lawyer.”

“I’m not playing.”

At that very moment, the sound of quick footsteps came from the corridor. The door opened and a woman dressed in a black suit entered. She was holding a thin brown folder. She looked first at me, then at Melissa, and finally at Paul.

“Before the lady signs,” she said, “you need to read this.”

Melissa reached toward the folder, but she still did not know that on the next page was the most dangerous sentence for her company…

Melissa opened the folder, and as she read the first page, the color drained from her face. Paul looked over her shoulder.

“What is this?” he asked.

“Documents proving my client’s ownership,” the woman answered. “I am Nino Japaridze, a patent attorney.”

Melissa dropped the sheet onto the table.

“This platform was created by a Northstar employee.”

“No,” I told her. “I created it at home, with my own laptop, for my aunt’s clinic.”

Nino turned on her phone and turned the screen toward everyone. Dates, the first records of the code, payments, and the registered name could be seen there. Every time was after the company’s working hours.

For the first time, Paul looked up at me.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because for years you said this market was too small for you.”

Melissa clenched her teeth.

“This proves nothing yet.”

Nino answered calmly:

“That is why I brought one more recording. We received it this morning.”

She took a small memory card out of the folder. The air in the room grew heavy. And I realized that my dismissal was only the beginning…

Nino inserted the memory card into the computer. For several seconds the screen remained black. Then a recording of an internal company meeting appeared, filmed two weeks earlier.

Paul recognized the voice immediately.

“If we frighten Rachel, she will sign herself,” he was saying in the recording. “Her little platform is nothing yet. But if we bring it under our rights, then it will become our product.”

Melissa’s voice answered:

“Conflict of interest will work as the reason for dismissal. No one in court will ask why we discovered this only after we showed her idea to investors.”

Such silence fell over the room that I heard the ticking of the wall clock again. This time each sound struck me in the heart.

Paul pushed his chair back.

“You obtained this recording illegally.”

“No,” Nino said. “We took it from the company’s backup archive because my client had already officially been indicated as the platform’s inventor. You yourselves created access to it.”

Melissa leaned toward me.

“Rachel, come on, don’t give in to emotions. We can offer you a new agreement.”

“This morning you told me that my employment was ending.”

“People change their minds.”

“I don’t.”

Nino took out a second document.

“Ownership of the platform belongs to Rachel. The company cannot use it. Moreover, according to our audit, Northstar presented its prototype to investors under its own name.”

Paul covered his face with both hands. Melissa stood up, but her knees gave way and she sank back into the chair.

“You cannot do this,” she whispered.

“You have already done it,” I answered.

Nino’s phone rang. She listened, her expression changed, and she walked over to the window.

“Rachel,” she said at last, “the investors’ board has scheduled an emergency meeting. But that is not all. Someone else has anonymously sent them another file.”

“What file?”

Nino turned toward me.

“About your aunt’s clinic. And if what is in this recording is true, Northstar’s biggest problem is not my platform…”

At that moment, a message arrived on my phone from an unknown number: “If you want to find out why the clinic really closed, come to the old station alone this evening…”
