Part 4 — My Daughter Was Declared Unsuitable for the Family After One Hundred Wedding Gifts, but My Sister’s Smile Disappeared Immediately

…The next morning I entered the city’s old investigative building. The smell of wet coats stood in the corridor, and dark marks left by the rain could be seen on the floor.

Nika was already waiting for me.

He held a thin folder in his hand.

“The expert is ready,” he told me.

“Claire?”

“She is on her way. Daniel is coming too.”

“Why did they come?”

Nika smiled bitterly.

“Because they still think that negotiation will save everything.”

Ten minutes later Claire appeared. She had dark circles under her eyes, but she was still wearing the expensive coat as if her life were not falling apart within a few hours.

Daniel was coming behind her.

“Anna,” he began.

“I prefer to speak with a lawyer present.”

“We are family.”

“That word comes to mind for both of you only when you need something.”

Claire looked at Nika.

“This can be stopped.”

“It can,” Nika answered. “With a full confession, a plan for returning the money, and cooperation with the investigation.”

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“This confession will not be necessary.”

“That is exactly why I am no longer your lawyer,” Nika said.

Daniel stared at him, frozen.

“What are you saying?”

“Yesterday evening I learned that you hid part of the transfers from me. I have a conflict of interest. I no longer represent you in this case.”

This was the first blow.

Claire sat down on the chair.

The signature expert, Marine, entered and arranged several enlarged copies on the table.

“The signature on the document visually resembles Anna’s signature, but the movement of its execution is different,” she said. “In a genuine signature, the pressure of the pen changes from left to right. Here the entire line has been transferred with the same pressure.”

“Meaning?” Claire asked.

“It is a copy that was digitally processed.”

Daniel hit the table with his hand.

“This proves nothing.”

Marine took out a second sheet.

“The electronic timestamp proves it. The document was created from the company’s internal computer at a time when Anna was outside the city, at our father’s grave. We also have the camera recording.”

Claire slowly looked at me.

“You planned all this?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marine turned on the screen.

In the video Daniel could be seen. It was two o’clock at night. He was sitting in the company’s empty office, entering Claire’s office and checking something on the computer.

Then his voice sounded on the screen.

“If we tie Anna’s consent to it, no one will be able to dispute your share.”

In the video Claire’s voice answered:

“She will never check me. She thinks I am her sister.”

The recording ended.

Claire listened to her own words. First disbelief appeared on her face, then shame.

Daniel stood up.

“This is taken out of context.”

“Exactly which part?” I asked. “The part where you planned to deceive me, or the part where you considered my trust a weakness?”

Daniel found no answer.

Claire covered her face with her hands.

“Anna, I didn’t want it to go this way.”

“But it did.”

“You should have protected me.”

“I protected you for six years. And you hid my child from the family and stole my signature.”

Later the investigators questioned both of them. Claire chose to cooperate. Daniel denied everything, but his voice, the camera recording, the bank documents, and the transfers fit together exactly. The investigation began the process of returning the money. Claire’s share was temporarily seized, the loan agreement was canceled, and an independent manager was appointed at the company.

The most difficult day was still the day when Claire had to empty her own office.

I did not go there.

Nika told me that she had left only one thing in the room: our father’s old photograph, which had stood on the shelf.

Claire had not asked to take the photograph.

Perhaps for the first time she understood that some things no longer return with money.

Three weeks later the court issued its final decision. Daniel was found guilty of fraud and was ordered to return the funds to the injured company. Claire admitted the crime; her cooperation with the investigation was taken into account, and she received a suspended sentence, a fine, and a long-term ban on holding executive positions.

I was not happy with this result.

I simply no longer had to save someone from her own choice for the first time.

Two months later I opened a small workshop in another district of the city. There we made candles, cards, and small gifts for guests. Emma had her own corner where she cut copper leaves from wooden forms.

One evening she asked me:

“Mom, if someone now says that I am not good enough for the family, what should I answer?”

I was standing by the window. The first snow was falling outside.

“Tell them that you are not obliged to become suitable for someone else’s idea.”

“And if they don’t believe me?”

“Then we will still know the truth.”

Emma smiled and showed me her new drawing. It depicted one hundred small boxes, but every box had a door.

“What does this mean?” I asked.

“That a gift should not remain in a cell.”

That night Claire wrote to me for the first time in several weeks.

“I want you to speak to me at least once. I lost everything.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote back:

“You have not lost everything. You can still take responsibility. But I cannot return to the life where I hid my child for your peace.”

Claire sent me only one word.

“Forgive me.”

I put the phone aside.

Forgiveness may come someday.

Trust is no longer an obligation.

!!!  Part 4 — I accused my daughter of wasting money, but one question from the school principal wiped the smile from my mother’s face

The next morning I entered Emma’s workshop. One small box stood on the table. A copper leaf was still attached to it, but now underneath it Emma had placed a new card.

“Thank you for coming.”

Snow was quietly falling on the city by the window.

I picked up the box in my hands and for the first time no longer felt its weight.

Sometimes a door opens when you finally stop standing in front of someone else’s house.

Missed the beginning?
