Six days after giving birth, my husband declared me a kidnapper of my own child, but when I placed the red folder down, the lawyer’s smile disappeared

The judge had not yet managed to open the case when my husband declared that I had forcibly taken the newborn from him. Such silence fell over the courtroom that I could even hear the baby’s calm breathing against my chest. The small white hat bought six days earlier had slipped slightly over Luka’s ears, and I carefully straightened its embroidered edge with my fingers so that he would not wake.

“Mrs. Reed, do you have a lawyer today?” the judge asked me, lowering his glasses to the tip of his nose.

“No, Your Honor.”

Marcus Vale smiled. He sat beside Evan in a dark suit and gold cufflinks, as if he had come not to court but to celebrate his own victory.

“Of course she doesn’t,” he whispered, though loudly enough for me to hear. “People like that usually think bringing a baby will cover every lie.”

Evan lowered his head, as if he were concerned about me.

“Lily is emotionally unstable,” he said. “I requested temporary guardianship for the child’s safety.”

Behind him, his mother, Claudia, held her pearl-laden neck proudly. Beside her sat Vanessa—the woman on whose arm my wedding bracelet glittered. Evan had given me that bracelet on our wedding day. Now it looked more natural on Vanessa’s wrist than it had ever looked on mine.

I placed a hand on my abdomen, where every movement still hurt. A cream-colored jacket covered the purple marks remaining on my shoulder. Those marks repeated the shape of Evan’s hand, but in the hallway Claudia had told me that if I showed them, the judge would consider me a “hysterical mother.”

Six days earlier, in the hospital recovery room, Evan had not come at all. Instead Marcus entered, arranged papers beside the infusion line in my vein, and smiled calmly.

“You will sign that Evan will make the temporary decisions for the child,” he told me. “If you refuse, we will say in court that you are mentally unstable.”

“The baby is not even six hours old yet.”

“And you are unemployed, you have no home, you have panic attacks. Judges do not trust mothers like that.”

I had made two visits to a doctor for panic. Both were after Evan slammed me against the pantry door. Then he told the doctor that I had fallen on the stairs. That evening I understood for the first time that my husband lied as if truth were someone else’s debt.

In the courtroom Luka stirred slightly. His tiny hand clasped my finger. That was when I realized that if I backed down now, they would build his life with the same lies as well.

I took a red folder from my bag. Its cover was scratched, and a brown hospital sticker clung to one corner. For weeks, between pain and sleeplessness, I had organized every sheet: messages, bills, medical records, photographs, and witness statements.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann verkündete vor seiner Familie die Schwangerschaft seiner Exfreundin, doch als ich plötzlich Deutsch sprach, erlosch sein Lächeln

Marcus chuckled.

“A small plea for mercy?”

I carried the folder to the judge. Then I looked at Evan.

“Your Honor, I am not asking for protection because of this child,” I said. “He is the evidence.”

The color disappeared from Evan’s face. The judge reached toward the first tab, and Marcus suddenly rose…

Marcus’s fingers touched the folder’s cover, but the judge stopped his hand.

“Mr. Vale, step back.”

“I only need to make sure that these materials were obtained legally.”

“I will decide that.”

The courtroom clock showed six. Its mechanical ticking struck my head while the judge opened the first sheet. The edge of Luka’s white hat touched my neck, and his warm breathing was the only thing keeping me anchored to the ground.

The first tab turned out to be a hospital record. It said that after the delivery the doctor had recorded an injury to my shoulder. On the second page was my doctor’s signature, but beside it was written: “Patient’s explanation — accidental fall on the stairs.”

“She confirmed that herself,” Evan said quickly. “She said she fell.”

“I did not say that,” I answered.

“You were confused that day.”

“That day you came into the room and locked the doors.”

Claudia gathered the beads into her palm.

“Lily, the child is still watching you. Do not turn this into drama.”

The judge looked sternly at her.

“Mrs. Reed, you will continue speaking only when I give you the floor.”

Marcus shook his head.

“That is precisely her problem, Your Honor. Accusations, emotional outbursts, and unfounded fear.”

I took a small memory card from my bag and handed it to the court employee. It was in a transparent plastic case, on the back of which I had written by hand: “Room, March 14, 22:17.” The card had been in a small camera attached under the bed. Evan had given me the camera when I had trouble breathing at night during pregnancy and told me it would be useful for keeping an eye on the baby.

“I requested the recording only when I realized that messages were disappearing from the phone,” I said.

For the first time Evan looked directly at me.

“You were secretly recording in my house?”

“In our house.”

“That is illegal.”

“Then why are you afraid to listen to it?”

His jaw tightened. Vanessa’s hand landed on his wrist, but he immediately removed it.

The judge signaled to the employee. First there was a rustling in the courtroom, then Evan’s voice—hoarse and hurried.

“Everything must be finished before the baby is born. If she does not sign, we will say that she will take the child and disappear.”

Claudia’s voice sounded in the recording.

“Motherhood is only money to her. The court will not leave a child with such a woman.”

Then Evan said:

“The main thing is for her to lose her patience herself. Marcus will say that she began having attacks. Vanessa is already preparing the room.”

!!!  Part 4 — On Christmas Eve I Found a Bloody Photograph at My Door, and When I Heard Daniel’s Voice, Vanessa’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

Vanessa covered her mouth with her hand. Claudia’s pearls struck against one another. Evan leaned toward me.

“Turn it off.”

“You cannot turn off that night,” I said.

The judge stopped the audio.

“This is a serious matter. What else do you have, Mrs. Reed?”

I looked at the last tab of the folder. I had been unable to touch that page for the longest time. There was one document there whose existence Evan had considered impossible—a document that showed why Luka’s birth had been his greatest fear.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“If you open that sheet, you will not be able to turn back.”

“Did you leave me anywhere to turn back to?” I asked.

The judge turned the folder toward me.

“Open it.”

My fingers reached the last tab hidden beneath the red cover. Outside, the wind shook the window, and Luka sighed in his sleep. I pulled out the sheet, and Evan, who still did not know what I was going to show, quietly said…

“This is impossible, Lily.”

His voice was so low that it sounded as if he were convincing himself. I handed the sheet to the judge. In large letters it said: GENETIC CONCLUSION. Below were the laboratory stamp, the date, and the result.

The judge read it carefully and then looked up at me.

“According to this document, the biological father of the child is not Evan Reed.”

The words split the courtroom in two.

Luka breathed calmly against my chest. Evan seized the chair, as if the floor were shaking beneath his feet.

“It is forged,” he said.

“You took the sample yourself,” I answered. “Before you went to the hospital, you kissed Luka on the cheek and told me that everything would be under your control from the very first day.”

“I am the father.”

“You were the one who requested the test.”

Marcus took the sheet and quickly scanned it with his eyes.

“We need to verify the laboratory.”

“The court expert has already verified it,” the judge said. “The conclusion is authentic.”

Evan turned his head toward me. Fear and anger fought one another on his face.

“Whose is he?”

That question hurt more than I expected. Not because I did not know the answer, but because for so long I had been unable to say the name for the child.

“Luka’s father is Daniel Mori.”

Claudia gripped the armchair.

“Daniel? Your former colleague?”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed me,” Evan rasped.

“You already knew.”

The judge said sternly:

“Mr. Reed, do not interrupt.”

I took out a second sheet. It contained transfers from Evan’s bank accounts made in the first month of the pregnancy. The money went to a private investigator and then to Daniel’s workplace. Evan had tried to intimidate Daniel so that information about Luka would remain hidden.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Evan, he did not give this to us.”

“Because you did not ask him!” Evan shouted.

I turned on the audio recording again. This time Evan’s voice could be heard, on the night before my delivery at the hospital.

“If the child is not mine, we will bury Lily’s past under him. We will tell everyone that she stole the baby. Before they learn the truth, I will already be the guardian.”

When the recording ended, tears appeared in Vanessa’s eyes.

“You told me she was threatening you,” she said quietly.

Evan did not even look at her.

The judge closed the folder.

“The request for full temporary guardianship is denied. The attempt to take the child is stopped. The court will issue a protection order, and the materials will be transferred to the investigators.”

Marcus opened his mouth but could not find a word. Claudia sat pale. And for the first time in six days, I managed to breathe out fully.

But then my phone rang in the hallway. It was an unknown number. I answered the call.

“Mrs. Reed?” a frightened man’s voice said to me. “I am Daniel Mori. I have just discovered that Evan did not tell me about the child. But that is not the worst news. One sheet is missing from your folder, and that sheet proves that Evan signed not only for you, but for another woman as well…”

The voice stopped. A new message appeared on the screen: “If you want to know who the next victim is, do not return home alone tonight…”
