Part 4 — On Christmas Eve I Found a Bloody Photograph at My Door, and When I Heard Daniel’s Voice, Vanessa’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

I was standing in the courthouse hallway when Blake told me these words. The wall clock showed twelve minutes past nine in the morning, but time seemed to have stopped in one place.

“This is impossible,” I told him.

Blake put the paper back into the folder.

“That is why we must find who signed it.”

My lawyer, Mira Hayes, called immediately.

“Daniel’s lawyer no longer wants to defend him,” she told me.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel himself gave him this document. And he does not know that we have already carried out the handwriting examination.”

Daniel still thought he had taken the final step.

He was wrong.

That same evening the investigative team searched my house again. The safe was built into the bedroom wall, behind a heavy wooden panel. I had attached a small copper star to the panel, because when I was a child my father used to tell me that every secret had its own star.

The star was no longer in place.

“Someone removed this,” Blake said.

A fingerprint was visible in the dust beside the safe.

Mira held the document up to the light.

“The signature looks very much like yours, but the pressure between the letters is different.”

“Is it forged?”

“Not merely forged. It is a photomontage of your old signature. Daniel used a document you signed years ago for the company’s registration.”

I leaned against the wall. I felt no anger. Only exhaustion.

“Then why did he believe the court would accept this?”

Blake took out his phone.

“Because he had one more person inside.”

He played a video for me on the screen. The recording was from my old office. Vanessa entered the archive at night, and behind her came the company’s chief financial officer, Gordon Feld.

“Gordon gave Daniel the old files of your signature,” Blake said. “But he did not know that your system, created by you, recorded every action on the server.”

Mira smiled bitterly.

“Daniel thought you were only a shareholder. In reality, you created the security architecture that is destroying him now.”

The next day, in the courtroom, Daniel sat silently for the first time. His own lawyer was no longer sitting beside him. The door opened and the prosecutor entered with new documents.

“The prosecution has additional evidence,” he said.

Daniel looked toward me.

“You planned this.”

“No,” I answered. “I only waited for the truth.”

For the first time, the recording from Christmas Eve was played.

Daniel’s voice spread through the courtroom.

“Tomorrow the police will find evidence that you stole money from the company.”

His face fell.

Then came Vanessa’s voice, Daniel’s shouting, the sound of the card thrown toward the fireplace, and my calm response.

“You destroyed yourself.”

Daniel stood up from his chair.

“This has been cut out of context!”

“Then let us hear the context too,” the judge said.

In less than four hours, the jury delivered its verdict. Vanessa was found guilty of participation in the conspiracy and electronic fraud. Her sentence was reduced because of her cooperation, but she lost her professional license and still went to prison.

Daniel refused cooperation.

He was sentenced to eleven years of imprisonment. His remaining share was confiscated for compensation for the damage. The company’s merger collapsed, but the company survived because my thirty-eight percent had never been transferred.

Six months later, the board of directors elected me temporary chairwoman.

On the very first day I entered Daniel’s office. His expensive watch was no longer lying on the desk. The photographs had been removed from the walls. Only an empty frame and dusty traces remained in the room.

I held in my hand the copper star found beside the safe.

Its return would change nothing, but I attached it to the wall anyway.

A year later I transferred most of my share to the employees. Many of them had been afraid of Daniel. I wanted fear no longer to be the main language of running the business in this company.

Two Christmases later I was living in a new house. It was smaller than the old one, but every step in the hallway sounded familiar to me. The door no longer had ten locks. It had only one.

It was snowing that evening.

I was sitting by the fireplace when the bell rang. For one second I saw again the red ribbon, the bloody photograph, and the words: “I am already inside.”

I opened the door.

The neighbor’s little girl, Sopho, was standing there, holding a plate of cookies in her hands.

“Mother baked many,” she told me.

“That is impossible,” I smiled. “There are never too many Christmas cookies.”

Several weeks later I received a letter from Daniel. It bore the stamp of the prison administration.

“Claire, let us start everything over. You know that we cannot endure without each other.”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time.

Then I put it in the trash bin.

I was not angry. Nor was I glad of his pain. I simply no longer felt obliged, for the first time, to soften the consequences for him.

One day Sopho brought me a sheet of paper. Our house was drawn on it, with yellow lights in the windows. Above the door was a small copper star.

“This is your protective star,” she told me.

“I do not need protection anymore.”

“Then why do you have it?”

I looked at the sheet and smiled.

“Because sometimes you must remember how you found the way home.”

That night the snow fell more thickly. I made tea in the kitchen, sat by the window, and looked at the copper star that was shining peacefully above the door.

!!!  A férjem a szeretőjével és a válási papírokkal érkezett a kórházi szobámba, miközben még vérző sebbel feküdtem a hármas ikreink mellett — azt hitte, teljesen egyedül maradtam

Daniel thought that revenge was taking away someone else’s money, company, and freedom.

But I ultimately learned something else.

True victory was the day when I woke up and realized that Daniel occupied not a single room in my mind anymore.

I locked the door once.

And this time only peace remained in the house.

Missed the beginning?
