On Christmas Eve I Found a Bloody Photograph at My Door, and When I Heard Daniel’s Voice, Vanessa’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

On Christmas Eve, on the bloody photograph found at my door, I saw my own sleeping face, and then a floorboard creaked from the upper floor.

The photograph lay in a small box tied with a red ribbon. Neither a name nor an address was written on the box. There was only the red ribbon, like the kind Daniel wrapped Christmas presents with every year. This small detail made my stomach clench.

The telephone rang immediately.

“Turn it over,” a distorted voice whispered.

I turned the photograph over and my blood froze. On the back was written one sentence: “I am already inside.”

Something else creaked upstairs.

I stood in the hallway, and the red and golden lights of the Christmas tree flickered on the walls. I still had the telephone pressed to my ear.

“Still checking the locks twice, Claire?” the voice chuckled.

Only one person had ever said that to me.

“Daniel, is that you?”

In response, I received several seconds of silence.

“You know yourself.”

The call ended.

Three months earlier, Daniel had left me for his business partner, Vanessa Cole. When he left, he told me that I was overly jealous, boring, and useless. That same evening he moved into the apartment in the skyscraper that we had once dreamed of buying together.

There was one thing he did not know.

He thought that I knew nothing about our company.

A second floorboard creaked from above. I did not run. I went into the kitchen, opened the cabinet under the sink, and reached for a small panel hidden behind the cleaning supplies. My fingers were trembling, but my mind was strangely calm.

Daniel had forgotten who I was before him.

Before marriage, for eight years I had worked on fraud-detection systems and corporate security. This house was not merely a house protected by cameras. I had turned its walls into a trap.

I activated silent lockdown mode. The outside doors locked without a sound. The cameras began simultaneous uploading to an encrypted storage. Then I sent Detective Aaron Blake one sentence: “Someone is in the house. Red mode.”

The floor creaked behind me.

I turned around slowly.

Vanessa stood at the kitchen entrance. She was wearing a black coat and had Daniel’s arrogant smile on her lips.

“Merry Christmas,” she said to me.

“You entered my house illegally?”

Vanessa laughed.

“You are still thinking slowly.”

Daniel appeared behind her. He was holding my work computer. My chest tightened, although I had already told myself a hundred times that I should feel nothing when I saw him.

“You were supposed to sign the divorce agreement,” he said.

“What do you want?”

Daniel put the computer on the counter.

“Your signatures.”

I understood immediately. Two weeks earlier, my lawyer had discovered that during the marriage Daniel had been transferring the company’s money into shell companies. But years earlier, when his business had almost collapsed, I had invested my inheritance to save it. In return, I had received thirty-eight percent of the company.

Daniel thought I had forgotten this agreement.

Vanessa dropped a folder onto the counter.

“Sign away your share.”

“And if I do not sign?”

Daniel came closer.

“Tomorrow the police will find evidence that you stole money from the company. By morning your name will be dead.”

I put on a frightened expression. I deliberately made my hands tremble.

Daniel kissed Vanessa on the temple.

“We have calculated everything.”

Behind him, the small camera hidden by the pantry door flashed once.

The recording was already running.

Daniel had confessed to the first crime in his own voice, but he still did not know that the three of us were not alone in the house that night. The sound of car brakes came from outside, and I reached toward the folder…

Daniel’s hand fell onto the folder, but I was faster and knocked it from the counter onto the floor.

“Sign, Claire,” he roared.

“First tell me why you brought my computer.”

Vanessa turned her face away.

“Because you have everything there,” I told him. “The hidden accounts, the false contracts, and the file you failed to find.”

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“You know nothing.”

“Then why is your hand trembling?”

At that moment heavy steps sounded in the hallway. Daniel looked toward the fireplace. For the first time I saw fear in his eyes.

“Where is the drive?” Vanessa asked.

Daniel bent toward me.

“If the police have come, everything will be blamed on you.”

“It is already too late.”

He pulled out a silver memory card and ran toward the fireplace. I knew what he intended. The fire was already blazing, while my system had blocked his access.

Daniel raised his hand.

I said only one word to him:

“Don’t you dare…”

And at that very moment someone knocked on the door with all their strength.

Daniel threw the silver memory card toward the fire. But the fire went out at that very moment. When I activated lockdown mode, I had automatically cut off the gas supply. The card fell onto the cold logs.

Daniel froze.

I walked over, picked up the card, and smiled.

“Merry Christmas.”

“You said she was stupid!” Vanessa shouted.

Daniel looked toward her.

“She was!”

“That was exactly your mistake,” I told him. “You never changed your opinion of me.”

Someone knocked on the door again.

“Police! Claire Bennett, open the door!”

I pressed one button on the panel. The locks opened, and Detective Aaron Blake entered the house with four police officers and two financial investigators. Snow was melting under their shoes and leaving small dark marks on the wooden floor.

“She set us up,” Daniel cried. “She arranged everything in advance!”

Blake looked at the camera.

“In her own house?”

“She recorded us illegally!”

“No,” I said. “In my state, recording a conversation is permitted if at least one of the participants consents. I consented.”

Daniel’s face became gray.

Vanessa picked up the folder.

“Everything was her idea! She falsified the documents and forced me to sign!”

“You are a liar!” Daniel shouted at her.

“You told me Claire would become frightened and sign!”

“Shut up!”

Vanessa backed toward the door, but Daniel tried to snatch the folder away. The police officers pinned both of them against the counter and put handcuffs on them.

That same night they seized the memory card and the computer. The recordings contained hidden accounts, false valuations, concealment of taxes, illegal transfers, and proof that Daniel was planning to deceive investors before a major merger.

Vanessa offered cooperation, but that could not save her career. Daniel refused to admit anything. One week before the trial he called me.

“You will collapse too, Claire.”

“No, Daniel. I stand without you.”

“You cannot prove this.”

“It is already proven.”

The next morning my lawyer called me. Daniel’s defense suddenly requested a postponement of the case and stated that they had a new document that could change everything. Blake quietly told me that this document had been taken from the safe in my house.

I had never opened the safe.

My signature stood on the paper.

And below it was written that I had already transferred thirty-eight percent to Daniel…
