Former Husband’s Family Saw the Four Children for the First Time, but Michael’s Hands Trembled at My Child’s Question

At my child’s question, Michael lost the color from his face, while the two military investigators standing behind him simultaneously reached for the doorknob.

All this happened on Christmas evening, in the Fort Adams mansion, at exactly seven twelve. The Christmas tree candles flickered in the room, while the silver ribbon fallen on the floor crumpled under my boots.

“Why is Grandma’s photo in the evidence folder?” Owen asked.

The silence became so heavy, as if the whole house had been covered by snow.

I stepped in front of the children. All four stood in identical dark-blue coats, with small golden badges shining at their throats. My department had given them these badges as honored guests. For them they were only beautiful badges. For me, they meant remembering the years when I raised four children alone and checked every night whether they were breathing.

Michael moved his gaze from the folder to Owen.

“Which photo are you talking about?” he barely uttered.

“The one I saw on your desk,” Owen answered. “Behind Grandma there was a large black mark on the wall. You told me it was just an old wall.”},{

Eleanor pressed a hand to her chest.

“What is the child saying?” she whispered.

“He entered a room he should not have entered,” said the blond woman who, a few minutes earlier, had been asking Michael to marry her.

Her name was Clara Hayes. A diamond ring was already on her finger, although Michael still held the open velvet box in his hand. Now the ring glittered on her finger as if it were trying to escape from someone else’s lie.

“The children are not guilty,” I told her.

Michael tightened his jaw.

“Avery, you should not have come here.”

“You told me the same thing eight years ago. I was pregnant then, and you told me I was a liar.”

His eyes paused on my face for a moment. Then they moved to the children.

“I didn’t know that…”

“That you had four children?” I interrupted him. “No one will believe that.”

Eleanor struck the table with her hand.

“Michael, tell her that all this is a mistake.”

“Mother, be quiet.”

Those two words were the first I heard from his mouth as an order for her and not for me. But the calm did not last long.

All the telephones in the mansion began ringing at the same time. A red warning lit up on the screens: security-system breach. Four objects identified. Authorization for detention issued.

My security sent me a message from outside immediately. The message came through an encrypted satellite channel belonging neither to the military network nor to the civilian one.

Harper took my hand.

“Mom, who is watching us?”

Her fingers were cold as ice. Something broke inside my heart, but I did not show it on my face.

“I can’t tell you yet, darling.”

Outside the door, a car engine roared in the snow. I went to the window and saw all the lights of the western garden go out.

At that moment Major Grant appeared on the stairs. His weapon was lowered, but his finger was near the trigger.

“The western square is empty,” he said. “Colonel Barrett has disappeared. Someone was waiting behind the trees.”

!!!  Meu marido me feriu na noite do casamento e exigiu silêncio, mas a reação do advogado da família fez seu pai empalidecer

Michael looked toward me.

“Who did you bring here, Avery?”

“Me?” I asked, and for the first time I saw not anger in his eyes, but real fear.

The doorknob slowly turned. Someone knocked three times.

Major Grant raised his weapon, while I rushed to the folder lying on the table. Its cover was visible right under the photo Owen had spoken about. My hand touched the edge of the folder and…

My hand touched the edge of the folder and at that same moment the door swung open.

Colonel Barrett stood on the threshold. Snow lay on his coat, and a thin line of blood ran down his cheek. No one was visible behind him.

“Weapons down,” he said. “This is not an attack.”

“Then who issued the order to detain the children?” I asked.

Barrett first looked at me, then at the four children, and finally at Michael.

“The order was issued in my name, but I did not issue it.”

The air in the room seemed to disappear. Harper clung to my coat; that was what I called the children at home, like my mother did. Chloe hid her head beside me.

“Mrs. Bennett, move the children to the back room,” Major Grant said.

“No,” I answered. “They are not leaving my side.”

“If the people outside want to take them, staying here is more dangerous.”

“I have protected four children for eight years. I do not need a lecture about danger.”

Michael took a step forward.

“Avery, listen to Grant.”

“I will not take advice from you now.”

“This is no longer only our family’s business.”

“It was never only a family matter, Michael. That is exactly why you ran away from me, isn’t it?”

His face grew tense. This time he had no answer.

Barrett closed the door and placed a small metal device on the table. A green light pulsed, as if someone’s heart were beating inside it.

“We have been finding this signal for three months,” he said. “It appears only when all four children are in one place.”

“Why?” I asked.

“We do not know.”

“That’s a lie,” Michael said.

Barrett looked toward him.

“You know more than you are saying.”

Eleanor stood by the window. In her fingers she still held one fragment of the shattered glass. The crystal point was stuck in her skin, but she seemed not to notice the blood.

“The children are ordinary children,” she said.

I slowly turned around.

“Then why did your son keep my pregnancy medical records in a military file?”

Michael lowered his eyes.

“Where did you see that?”

“In your office. Beside the photo.”

“You should not have gone in there.”

“You should not have left the door open.”

Owen looked at Eleanor again.

“Grandma, do you know who took that photo?”

Eleanor opened her mouth, but could not produce a sound.

At that moment my phone lit up once more. A new message arrived: if the objects are not handed over in ten minutes, the defense system will activate automatically.

“Objects?” I repeated quietly. “My children have names.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Tres herederos dejaron a mi hija al borde de la muerte y se rieron de mi denuncia, hasta que uno dejó de sonreír

Major Grant looked at the device.

“The signal is already inside.”

Suddenly the Christmas-tree lights went out. Only the fire in the fireplace remained in the room. From far away came the sound of the iron gate, and then the doors of the corridor leading toward the children’s room locked.

Chloe screamed in fear.

“Mom!”

I ran toward her, but Michael grabbed my arm.

“Don’t go there.”

“Let go of me.”

“If the door opens now, the sensor will detect them.”

“They are my children!”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t. If you knew, you would not have disappeared eight years ago.”

His hand released me.

Barrett opened the wall panel and revealed wires hidden inside. A small sealed card hung on one of them. It bore a date—the same day my four children were born.

Michael took a step back.

“This is impossible.”

“What is impossible?” I asked.

For the first time Eleanor looked directly at me.

“Your children must not know who their father was.”

“I already know that.”

“No, Avery. You do not know why he denied them.”

Suddenly a switch lit up at the other end of the room. A hidden screen appeared on the wall. It showed my pregnancy hospital record, while one inscription blinked below: four genetic carriers.

Michael looked at the screen and said in a whisper:

“Mother, you raised all four of them on a lie.”

Eleanor raised her head.

“I only saved the family.”

Then a new file opened on the screen. The author of the file was Michael, and the last change had been made on the night he left me…

The date of the file’s last change became visible to everyone in the room.

Eight years ago. Two forty-nine in the morning.

Below it stood Michael’s signature.

“That is not my signature,” he said.

Barrett approached the screen.

“The digital trace says the file was opened with exactly your military key.”

“Mother had the key then.”

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

The anger inside me grew so quickly that my hands began to tremble. For years I thought Michael had simply abandoned me. Now I saw that my pregnancy had been a folder, a code, and a secret project for someone.

“Tell me the truth,” I said to Eleanor. “Right now.”

“Your children were not an ordinary set of quadruplets,” she said.

“They are people.”

“Their genetic indicators were being used for a military program.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“Mother, enough.”

“Your father created this program,” Eleanor continued. “A study of hereditary endurance. During the pregnancy they learned that all four fetuses had the same rare indicator. They wanted to take the children, but I refused.”

“Refused?” I asked. “Then why did Michael disappear?”

Michael knelt before the fireplace, as if the years had suddenly become heavy all at once.

“I prevented them from taking the children,” he said. “But Mother told me that if I stayed beside you, the program would come directly to you. She convinced me that the only way was to abandon you and break all contact.”

“You humiliated me.”

“I know.”

“You called me a liar.”

“I know.”

“I gave birth alone.”

!!!  My wife accidentally revealed my infidelity while talking to a friend, but when a certain name was mentioned, the phone slipped out of my hand.

His face changed.

“I didn’t know there were four.”

“You did not ask.”

Those words sounded more powerfully than any scream.

Clara slowly moved away from him.

“You told me that a woman was simply an old mistake.”

Michael looked at her.

“Clara…”

“No. Do not say my name to me anymore.”

The recording began playing on the screen. The voice of a young Michael sounded, recorded on the night he stood in the hospital corridor.

“If I leave Avery, they will not find the children. Mother says this is the only way. I will never acknowledge them until the danger is over.”

The recording stopped.

Michael raised his head.

“I did not know Mother would keep the data.”

“But she did,” Barrett said. “And now someone has stolen this data.”

My phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen. The call lasted only three seconds, but that was enough for me to hear a man’s voice.

“The children have already been marked. You cannot hide them.”

“Who are you?” I asked.

“The one who has waited for them longer than you have been alive.”

The connection broke.

All four children gathered around me. Owen held out his hand.

“Mom, are we going home?”

I clutched his hand, but this time I had no answer.

Barrett opened a new window on the screen. It showed a security vehicle leaving Fort Adams, standing on the road. It had our department’s insignia, and the driver was my most trusted employee, Daniel Rose.

“This is impossible,” Grant said.

Barrett’s face became rigid.

“The vehicle left ten minutes ago. It had the children’s location.”

Michael looked toward me.

“Avery, the enemy has been standing beside you for a long time already.”

A new message arrived on the phone. It contained only one sentence: Daniel has found the children.

I looked at the screen and realized that the worst news was waiting not in the mansion, but in my own department…
