Part 4 — After the accident, my husband swore his love beside my bed, but one quiet step suddenly erased his smile

After Santiago’s words, for several seconds only the monitor’s beeping could be heard in the room.

Mauricio’s hands were already in handcuffs, but his gaze remained calm.

This calm frightened me more than shouting.

“What does it mean, the transfer was executed?” I asked.

Santiago handed the phone to Lucia.

“Access to your main account was made last night. The money was transferred to three different companies. The final recipient is unknown.”

Lucia looked at the screen and knitted her brows.

“This signature uses your old electronic key.”

“That key was in my safe,” I said.

Mauricio chuckled quietly.

“You always thought that everything belonged only to you.”

Santiago looked at him sternly.

“One more word and you will continue this conversation in a cell.”

“My lawyer is already on the way,” Mauricio said.

There was an immediate knock at the door. An elegantly dressed man entered, carrying a leather bag.

“I am Daniel Vargas. Mr. Herrera’s representative.”

He looked at Mauricio, then at the syringe, the camera, and the police officers.

“At this stage my client will make no further comment.”

“You came late,” Lucia replied. “Everything has been recorded.”

Vargas whispered something into Mauricio’s ear. For the first time I saw my husband’s jaw tense.

“What happened?” I asked.

The lawyer avoided my eyes.

“Now is not the time to discuss this.”

“On the contrary,” Santiago said. “Your client’s digital signature was used to steal money. If he does not tell you who he had as an accomplice, you too will become part of the investigation.”

Mauricio looked at the lawyer.

“Tell him Camila did all of this.”

Camila stood beside the door and was trembling.

“You are a liar! You told me that all the files had been deleted.”

A heavy silence fell over the room.

Mauricio lunged toward her.

“Be quiet.”

“No!” Camila’s voice cracked. “You told me that Valeria would die anyway and then the two of us would flee the country. You promised me that you would share the money with me.”

Vargas slowly closed his bag.

“Ms. Camila, from this moment say nothing more.”

“You knew too,” she told him. “You prepared those documents.”

The lawyer’s face lost its color.

Mauricio lost control for the first time.

“Everybody shut up!”

Santiago nodded to the police officers. Mauricio and Camila were taken away. Vargas remained in the room and looked at the floor for several seconds.

“I did not know about the murder plan,” he said.

“But you knew about the money,” Lucia replied.

He lowered his head.

“Yes.”

That same night, in the hospital’s small waiting room, the police made Mauricio listen to his own voice. In the recording he said calmly: “I love her money more than her. In the morning I will be much more convincing as a widower.”

Mauricio sat on a chair.

“This conversation was in different circumstances,” he said.

Santiago placed the recorder in front of him.

“No. This is your voice.”

The recording started again.

Mauricio heard his own laughter.

His face slowly became gray.

At that time I was moved to the rehabilitation room. Rafael stood beside the bed and held a small object in his hand—a copper-colored old keychain that I had carried on my bag since my father’s workshop.

The bag had remained in the car during the accident. Rafael took it out of the wrecked trunk.

One letter had been scratched onto the keychain in my father’s handwriting: “V.”

I enclosed it in my fingers.

All my life I had thought it was only a small memory. That night I understood that the most precious thing I had received from my father had been neither the factory nor the money.

It had been the right to become suspicious.

For Mauricio, that night ended in prison. Camila testified because she wanted her own sentence reduced. Vargas handed over all the documents of the financial scheme. My accounts were frozen, but most of the money was returned within several weeks.

Mauricio’s trial took place six months later.

I entered there on foot.

I still walked slowly, used a cane, and my ribs hurt after a long conversation. But I was no longer the woman who lay with her eyes closed in a hospital bed listening to the plan for her own death.

The judge listened to the recording.

Then the sound of the car.

Then the camera video.

Mauricio did not raise his head.

His lawyer said in the final statement:

“My client was a desperate man who made one mistake.”

I rose from my chair.

“One mistake does not cut the brakes,” I said. “One mistake does not prepare medicine. One mistake does not make a person calm my mother by deceiving her with tears.”

The courtroom was silent.

“He made a choice. I simply decided to stop covering up the consequences of his choice.”

The judge sentenced Mauricio to a long prison term. Camila was also sentenced, although she received a shorter term because of her testimony. The controlling package of my company remained with my mother, as I had originally decided, while I used the money that was returned to me to finance a rehabilitation center.

My mother Elena hugged me after the trial.

“I thought I was losing my daughter,” she told me.

“I am here now, Mom.”

“You are no longer the same as before.”

“I know.”

“Is that bad?”

“No. Now I listen to my own voice.”

Three months later I moved into a new apartment, away from the city’s noisy streets. In the morning I looked from the window at a small square where children were going to school. I went to the enterprise four days a week. I spent the rest of the time with doctors and a physiotherapist.

My father’s little keychain lay in the corner of my desk.

It no longer hung on my bag. I took it in my hand every day before making a decision.

One evening my mother brought home a seven-year-old neighbor girl, Sofia. She drew me on a sheet of paper: a woman in a wheelchair, a small house beside her, and a large sun in the sky.

“This is you,” she told me. “You will not be alone here anymore.”

I looked at the drawing and smiled.

“How do you know?”

“Because the sun always returns.”

The first winter turned out to be difficult. When the snow came, my leg hurt and climbing the stairs was hard. But every morning I opened the window, breathed the cold air, and reminded myself that I was alive.

One day I received a letter from Mauricio.

Lucia told me that it had been sent through his lawyer.

“Valeria, I know that I do not deserve forgiveness. But I want you to listen to me only once. I was not planning to kill you. The debts started everything for me. Camila drove me crazy. If you speak to me, I will explain.”

!!!  A volt férjem sárral öntött le a buszmegállóban, de amikor a gálán meglátott, hirtelen elnémult

I read the letter to the end.

Then I called Lucia.

“Should I answer?”

“Only if you want to.”

“I do not want to.”

“Then you already have your answer.”

I wrote one sentence myself.

“I heard your reasons that night; now I choose the reasons for my peace.”

I sent the letter back.

Nothing more.

I did not need years to forget Mauricio. Forgetting had not been necessary either. I remembered his hand on my hand, his false tears, his voice speaking to me about his own death.

But these memories were already standing behind the door.

And I no longer opened the door.

One morning, while I was testing a prototype of a new device, my father’s keychain fell from my hand and sounded lightly on the floor.

I picked it up.

The letter scratched onto the copper surface shone in the sun’s ray.

“V.”

Valeria.

Alive.

Free.

And for the first time these words were not followed by fear.

I turned the key in my hand and locked the door with my own hand.

This time outside remained the one who had wanted my life.

And I went toward the light.

Missed the beginning?
