I caught my husband with his hand on another woman’s waist in the supermarket, but at the sight of my calmness, both of them turned pale

My husband was standing with his hand on another woman’s waist when he saw me near a pile of peaches in the supermarket, but at that moment he still did not know that his betrayal was no longer the most dangerous secret.

Lauren smiled at me first. There was no regret in that smile. It looked more like satisfaction, as if a long-awaited scene had finally begun at the time she wanted.

Ethan’s face changed.

I held one perfect peach in my hand. Its skin was soft like velvet, and a red stain ran across its yellow surface. For a few seconds I simply looked at it, then put it in the basket and went toward the pasta aisle.

“Helen, wait,” Ethan called to me.

I did not stop.

“Helen, can you hear me?”

He stepped in front of me near the coffee shelf. He was wearing the expensive watch that I had given him for our fifteenth wedding anniversary. The store’s white light reflected on the watch face like a cold stain.

“Do you have something to tell me?” I asked.

“Are you… in shock?”

“No.”

I said one word to him. Nothing more.

Lauren stood several meters away, adjusting her diamond bracelet. I knew it had cost forty-two thousand eight hundred. I also knew that the bracelet had not been bought with Ethan’s personal card. The expense had been charged to our company’s account, as a gift for an important client of the executive.

That was why I was not shouting.

I had known for eleven weeks.

“It is not the way it looks,” Ethan told me.

“Then why does it look exactly that way?”

His jaw tightened. Lauren rolled her eyes.

“You always dramatized everything,” she said.

For the first time I looked directly at her. She was over thirty, with honey-colored hair and the heavy scent of expensive perfume. The bracelet on her right wrist shone as if she wore it as a sign of victory before my family.

At the checkout I laid out pasta, yogurt, coffee, basil, sparkling water, a small package of khinkali, and four peaches. The cashier asked me whether Grace still liked vanilla yogurt.

“She still likes it,” I answered in an ordinary voice.

Ethan stood behind me. My marriage was collapsing publicly, while I was explaining to a stranger that my sixteen-year-old daughter liked vanilla yogurt.

That frightened him more than shouting.

He followed me to the parking lot. The November wind blew between the cars, and the sweet smell of peaches came from the shopping bag.

“I should have told you myself,” he said to me.

“When?”

“On Monday. I have the papers. Everything should be settled peacefully.”

“Peacefully?”

“We must not involve Grace in this war.”

In these words I heard not a father’s concern, but a threat.

I cried at home only after the garage door closed. I put the four peaches on the kitchen table and looked at them for a long time. I had met Ethan at the age of twenty-five. With him I had gone through the first failure of the business, my father’s funeral, the birth of our daughter, and countless ordinary mornings.

But this was no longer only marital betrayal.

Eleven weeks earlier, a hotel notification had appeared on his tablet. A room for two guests, one large bed, and late checkout. At that same moment Lauren’s message arrived: “Book a room with a terrace this time.”

The next morning I called Margaret Sloan, my lawyer. Then Jonathan Pike, the company’s chief financial officer, carefully placed a folder before me: hotels, flights, expensive dinners, the rent for an apartment in Manhattan, and jewelry.

“Helen, I think the company is financing their personal relationship,” he told me.

That evening Margaret called me.

!!!  ნაწილი 4 — ყოფილმა მთხოვა, სახლიდან სამუდამოდ გავქრალიყავი, მაგრამ ექვსი კვირის შემდეგ მისმა ჩვეულებრივმა ზარმა ფერი დაკარგა

“How did it go at the store?”

“Lauren thought she would humiliate me.”

“At times like this, people stop being careful,” she said calmly. “Be ready on Monday.”

The sky was darkening beyond the lake. I knew that my father’s trust held thirty-eight percent of the company’s voting shares. Ethan knew this, but he had always treated me as if my place were only beside him as his wife.

The telephone rang. Margaret’s name appeared on the screen.

“Helen,” she said as soon as I answered, “you need to see something tonight. The folder is already with me. Open it and look at the very first page…”

After Margaret’s last words, the still air in the kitchen seemed to grow heavy. I held the phone to my ear, and with my other hand I touched the peach lying on the table. Its skin was cold.

“What should be on the first page?” I asked.

“The thing Ethan will use against you on Monday.”

“A court document?”

“No. Something older. Come to me in the morning.”

“Why can’t you tell me now?”

Margaret was silent for several seconds.

“Because telephones are not designed for listening in, but people very often forget that their conversation may be heard somewhere else too.”

A chill ran down my back. I went to the window. At the end of the street stood a black SUV with its engine running. After a few seconds the car turned on its headlights and slowly drove away.

That night I told Grace nothing. I entered her room when she was sitting on the bed and doing chemistry problems. Under the desk lamp, her pencil moved quickly, while on the windowsill stood a small wooden turtle that I had given her in childhood.

“Mom, why are you looking at me like that?”

“I just wanted to see you.”

“Did Dad do something?”

My heart struck so hard that it seemed to already know the answer.

“Why are you asking me?”

“He called me today. He said he might pick me up from school early on Monday.”

“Do you want that?”

Grace put down her pencil.

“I don’t know. Whenever Dad says ‘don’t worry,’ something always happens.”

I sat beside her and put my arm around her. Her hair smelled of lemon shampoo.

“Whatever happens, you will not end up in the middle,” I told her.

“Are you promising me that, or am I promising you?”

“Both.”

The next morning, at nine o’clock, I entered Margaret’s office. A large clock hung on the wall, and the sound of every second was heard too clearly. Jonathan was already there, holding a paper cup of coffee. His fingers were trembling so much that several drops fell from the lid.

Margaret opened the folder.

On the first page was Ethan’s signature. On the second page was the company seal. On the third page was the name of my trust.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Last night Ethan sent a letter to the board of directors,” Margaret said. “He claims that you are psychologically unstable, can no longer interfere in the company’s decisions, and that the right to manage the shares should temporarily be transferred to him.”

Jonathan lowered his head.

“He also referred to custody of Grace,” he added.

The room blurred.

“Does he know that I saw everything?”

“He knows you are preparing something,” Margaret answered. “But he does not know how far the audit has gone.”

She took out new documents. There were the bracelet invoice, payments for the Manhattan apartment, Lauren’s trips, and a table of expenses approved by Ethan.

“These are not only financial violations,” Margaret said. “There are false descriptions, changed dates, and transfers hidden from the board of directors.”

“How much?”

Jonathan put down his coffee.

“By the preliminary count, six hundred seventy thousand dollars. The final amount will be higher.”

At that moment the door opened. Ethan entered. He was wearing a black coat, and on his face was the same confident expression that had convinced me for years that everything was under control.

“We should have talked alone, Helen,” he said.

“We are already talking.”

His gaze shifted to the folder.

“Margaret, this is a family matter.”

“No, Mr. Calloway,” she replied. “Now it is also a company matter.”

Ethan leaned toward me.

“On Monday you must sign the agreement. You will keep the house, and you will receive money as well. As for Grace’s custody, you should not ask unnecessary questions.”

“Are you threatening me?”

“I am warning you. If you want a fight, it will damage both of us.”

“Both of us? Or your career?”

His face changed for the first time.

“You do not know what you are doing.”

“On the contrary. For the first time I know exactly.”

Margaret turned off a small recorder under the table. I already knew that this morning words would become just as important as documents.

Ethan pushed the folder toward me.

“On Monday all this will be over.”

“No,” I told him. “On Monday everything will begin.”

He slammed the door and left. A few seconds later Margaret’s phone rang. She looked at the screen, lost color, and left the call unanswered.

“Who was it?” I asked.

“The chairman of the company’s board.”

“Why didn’t you answer?”

Margaret turned the phone toward me. A new message was visible on the screen, with only one sentence attached: “If Helen stays home tonight, Grace will not be there tomorrow morning…”

The sentence displayed on Margaret’s phone kept flashing. None of us moved in the room. The noise of the city could be heard beyond the window, but for me everything froze at one point, in those words.

“We are calling the police,” Jonathan said.

“Not yet,” Margaret stopped him. “First we need to know who sent it.”

She opened the message. The sender’s address was fake, but the attached file had truly been sent from Ethan’s office network. After a few seconds Margaret transferred the screen to the projector.

The video began.

The recording had been made in Ethan’s private office. On the desk lay the same black folder that had been before me a few minutes earlier. Ethan stood by the window, while Lauren sat in an armchair.

“If Helen does not sign, we will use Grace’s situation,” Ethan was saying.

Lauren chuckled.

“She will believe everyone anyway when they say you are a bad mother.”

“I have already prepared the psychologist’s letter. It is enough to say that she has become paranoid in recent months.”

My stomach contracted. I was watching a lie fabricated against me using my own home, my own marriage, and my own child.

Jonathan said quietly:

“This is no longer only about money.”

“I know,” I answered.

The video continued.

Ethan placed several receipts on the table.

“The bracelet, the apartment, the trips—everything will be paid for by the company. Until I silence her, the board will find out nothing.”

“And if they find out?” Lauren asked.

Ethan smiled.

“Helen cannot do anything. The shares in her father’s trust are in her name, but I exercise control. She has neither enough courage nor the desire to burn everything down.”

Margaret stopped the video.

I could not speak for a long time.

“Is the voice really his?” I asked.

!!!  Mi madrastra me humilló frente a toda la nobleza y, cuando un desconocido me invitó a bailar, su sonrisa desapareció

“The recording was examined by an independent expert,” Margaret said. “Its authenticity has been confirmed.”

“Who else knows?”

“Everyone should know by now.”

Margaret opened a second document. My father’s trust agreement stated that after his death I controlled the voting shares, not Ethan. My husband was only the executive head of the board. He had no right to transfer any of them.

“So he was lying to me when he said he controlled the shares,” I said.

“He was not only lying,” Margaret replied. “He prepared false statements for the board and also tried to forge your signature.”

At that moment the office door opened. The chairman of the board, Harold Bell, entered with two independent directors. He held a sealed folder in his hand.

“Mrs. Helen,” he said, “this morning we received the preliminary audit report.”

“And?”

“Ethan Calloway’s executive authority is suspended as of this moment.”

Jonathan lowered his eyes. Margaret exhaled. I simply sat down in the chair because I had no strength left in my legs.

Harold opened the folder.

“There is one additional matter. The audit discovered transfers made directly from Grace’s education fund.”

“What?”

“The money was transferred to an account belonging to your daughter. Then, on that same day, it was withdrawn as cash.”

“From Grace’s account?”

Margaret looked at me.

“That is impossible. Only you and the bank trustee have access to that account.”

The telephone rang in the room. This time it was mine. Grace was calling.

“Mom,” her voice trembled, “Dad came to the school. He says you were in an accident and that I have to go with him. The police are with him too…”

I ran to the window. The same black SUV stood at the end of the street. Ethan was visible beside it.

Margaret took hold of my hand.

“Do not go alone.”

“My daughter is there.”

“Helen,” Harold said, “before Ethan reached the school, our lawyers had already obtained an emergency protective order. But the order has not yet been served.”

Then Margaret’s phone rang again. She listened, an unusual pallor spread across her face, and she slowly told me:

“The bank called me. Money did not disappear from Grace’s account only once. And the last transfer was made this morning from Ethan’s office…”

And this time he still had no idea who had stood in front of the bank camera that same morning…
