Part 4 — My husband announced he was leaving for four years and left his parents in my house, but his face changed after my calm smile

Do not trust the man who came…

The sender of the message was Vanessa.

At that moment three heavy blows sounded on the door.

Shirley stepped back frightened.

“Is it the police?” Walter asked.

Mirian looked out the window.

“No. There are two cars. One is standing at the corner of the street.”

Nora picked up the phone and called the security service. I pressed the envelope to my chest. For the first time I realized that this was no longer only about a cheating husband and his mistress.

There was another knock on the door.

“Mrs. Norris, I am Vanessa Blake’s lawyer,” the man called. “I must speak with you urgently.”

Mirian shook his head.

“A real lawyer would have identification and would not come to the door like this.”

Nora whispered something to the security officer. A few minutes later the flashing lights of a police car appeared outside. The unknown man stepped back, but it was too late.

He was arrested in front of the house.

In his bag they found forged powers of attorney, a plan of the house, and copies of my personal documents. He was not Vanessa’s lawyer. The man turned out to be a private investigator hired by Everett, who was supposed to obtain the forgery of my signature and confirmation of the transfer of the property.

But Everett did not know this yet.

He called me that same evening.

“Stella, what the hell is happening? My cards no longer work.”

The noise of the airport could be heard behind him.

“Are you still in Atlanta?” I asked.

“That is not important. Restore the accounts immediately.”

“No.”

For the first time in my life I did not refuse him silently. I said it aloud.

“You are not going anywhere until you explain where my money is.”

“It is our money!”

“No. You yourself said that she could not take my property away from us.”

Silence fell.

“Who told you that?”

“You did.”

Mirian turned on the recording and placed the phone in front of me. Everett’s own voice sounded in the room.

!!!  My Flight Was Delayed and I Found Two Boys with the Woman Who Disappeared Six Years Ago, but Raymond’s Face Changed When He Saw My Mother

“Stella will not check anything.”

“Four years will be enough.”

“She cannot take the house away from us.”

On the other line Everett could no longer hide his breathing.

“Turn that off,” he said.

“You said it.”

“Stella, I was angry. Those words mean nothing.”

“When a person hears his own voice, the most difficult thing is precisely that he can no longer blame someone else.”

He ended the call.

During the following hours the phone did not stop. First Everett sent me an apology. Then he threatened me. Then he wrote me another apology.

Shirley stood in my kitchen, wringing her trembling hands.

“Where should we go?” she asked me.

“To a hotel.”

“Your husband will not forgive you for this.”

“He has already forgiven me everything I endured because of him. Now I have nothing to forgive him.”

Walter stood silently. Beside him was a suitcase, which he had brought on the very first day. A small wooden fish hung from its handle, belonging to his son in childhood.

“Stella,” he said, “we thought you agreed.”

“You were not given consent. You never asked even once.”

Shirley lowered her eyes.

They left the house that night.

The next morning I found the rooms empty, but traces of their presence remained everywhere: a crushed place on the sofa cushion, a greasy handprint on the refrigerator door, and in the guest room my old picture, which they had taken down from the wall.

The picture lay on the floor. I bent down, picked it up, and cleaned the glass with a napkin.

Then I entered the office. My grandmother’s copper bell still stood on the desk. I placed the folder beside it.

A few days later Vanessa went to the police herself. She confirmed everything: Everett had promised her marriage, my house, and a new life. When she realized that he was deceiving her too, she collected the recordings and tried to escape.

!!!  Part 4 — Grandmother forbade me to walk near the abandoned house, but when she heard my explanation, the color drained from her face

Everett was arrested at the airport before he could leave the country. A case was opened against him for financial fraud, forgery of documents, and attempted appropriation of another person’s property.

There was not enough evidence against Shirley and Walter. They remained witnesses. But Shirley called me for the first time before testifying in court.

“Stella, can you not come?” she asked me.

“Why?”

“I am ashamed that I behaved this way in your house.”

“I will come. Everyone must hear the truth.”

In the small courtroom Everett sat in a black suit. He no longer had that calm smile. His lawyer sat beside him and looked through the papers.

The judge ordered the recording to be played.

When he heard his own voice in the room, Everett initially pretended as if he were listening to another person.

Then the color drained from his face.

“That is my voice,” he said.

The lawyer looked toward him.

“Mr. Norris, do not say anything else.”

“But I…”

“You have already said enough.”

It was the first time someone had not allowed him the right to save himself.

The court sentenced him to imprisonment and ordered the return of the money and reimbursement of my lawyers’ expenses. The house and all my personal savings remained protected.

The divorce was completed in six months.

Everett did not get the house. He did not get my account. He did not get the life he had built on me.

And a few weeks later I moved to a new job. I worked at a small financial consulting company in the city center. I went early in the morning, bought a cinnamon bun at the same bakery on the way, and turned on music at home in the evening without anyone shouting at me from another room.

The first snow came in December.

I was standing by the window when my niece, Lea, sat on the floor and drew me a picture with colored pencils. There was a big house in the picture, with open windows, and a woman standing at the door.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Am cerut să-mi explice de ce trei copii ajunseseră la ușa mea, iar avocatul meu a încetat brusc să zâmbească

“Is this you?” I asked.

“Yes. You are not afraid anymore,” Lea answered.

Children’s truth is sometimes the most accurate.

Three months later I received a letter from Everett. My name was written on the envelope in his handwriting. I held it in my hand for several minutes and did not open it.

Mirian told me that an answer was not necessary.

I read it anyway.

“Stella, I made a mistake. When I get out, I want us to start again. Our house should be ours again. Please give me at least one meeting.”

I placed the paper on the kitchen table.

Then I took a pen and wrote only one sentence:

“I have already started my life over, without you.”

I sent the letter back.

That evening, when I returned home, I opened the door of the office. My grandmother’s copper bell stood on the desk. The wind coming through the window passed lightly over it, and a small, clear sound rang through the room.

This time the sound was waiting for no one.

It was proclaiming freedom.

Missed the beginning?
