After I refused to terminate the pregnancy, he abandoned me, but five years later, seeing the twins at the shopping center, his face changed and he turned pale

The moment Damian Mercer saw me at the glass doors of the shopping center, the cup of coffee fell from his hand and spilled all over the floor. It was Saturday, two o’clock in the afternoon. People were chasing Christmas sales, children were screaming by the toy windows, and I was walking while holding the hands of my two boys, as if my life had not been buried there, at those very doors, five years earlier.

Damian first looked at me, then at the children. His face slowly lost its color. Both boys had gray eyes. Exactly like those that had passed from generation to generation in his family. The boy on the left had Damian’s jaw shape, while the one on the right developed the little wrinkle between his eyebrows that appeared on Damian when he watched something suspiciously.

The assistant standing beside him lowered the tablet.

“Mr. Mercer, are you all right?”

Damian could not answer. Coffee had spilled onto his fingers, but he did not even feel the pain.

I bent down beside one of the chairs and tied Luka’s shoelace. Nika immediately whispered into my ear:

“Mom, why is that man looking at us?”

“Don’t pay attention, sweetheart.”

But my voice was not as calm as I wanted it to be. An old fear woke inside me, just as sharply as then, when I held the pregnancy test in my hand and Damian’s office door closed behind me.

Five years earlier, at six o’clock in the evening, he told me that the children would destroy his future. A white envelope lay on the table. Beside it were the address of a private clinic, a lawyer’s card, and a check for two million dollars.

“This is a peaceful way to solve the problem, Mara,” he told me.

“You call our children a problem?”

Damian looked at the lights of Manhattan beyond the window.

“I cannot risk losing the company, the family, and the inheritance.”

“And I cannot risk losing the children.”

That night I left. The next day Damian’s mother, Victoria Mercer, called me. First she threatened me, then she cried, and finally she told me that if I gave birth to the children, her family would take everything from me. I accepted nothing. Neither the check nor the promise. I took only one thing from that apartment—a small silver elephant pendant that my mother had given me when she learned about the pregnancy.

Now I had attached that pendant to the zipper of Luka’s jacket. I told the children that it was our sign of luck. In truth, it reminded me that I had been able to protect them to the end.

Damian took one step forward.

“Mara.”

There was no longer any trace in his voice of the man who had pushed the envelope toward me five years earlier.

“Wait.”

I stopped, but I did not turn around.

“Are they my children?” he asked.

Nika squeezed my hand more tightly.

I turned slowly. For the first time I saw not arrogance in Damian’s eyes, but fear.

“Why do you think you deserve an answer to that question?”

“Because I am their father.”

Luka raised his head.

“Mom, is this man really our father?”

Damian lowered his eyes. At that same moment I noticed Victoria Mercer standing behind him. She was wearing an expensive black coat and had a smile on her face that disappeared immediately when she looked at the children.

“Mara,” she said sharply, “you must leave here immediately.”

!!!  On the third day after my C-section, three children were left at my door, but after the call my husband’s face turned pale

“You spoke to me like this five years ago too, Victoria.”

Damian looked at his mother.

“You knew her?”

Victoria’s lips froze.

“Damian, this woman only creates problems.”

I put my fingers into my bag and touched a small, folded folder. It had been with me for five years. I had never opened it in front of anyone, because I did not want the children to endure another fight.

But now, for the first time, I saw real fear on Victoria’s face.

“Damian,” I told him, “before you demand an answer from me, ask your mother where the two million went that she supposedly paid me.”

Victoria quickly reached toward my bag. Her fingers touched the edge of the folder and…

Her fingers touched the edge of the folder, and then Damian grabbed her by the wrist.

“Let her go, Mother.”

Victoria froze. In the noise of the shopping center, those three words sounded as if someone had switched off all the stores’ music at once.

“You do not know what you are doing,” she whispered to him.

“I know exactly that five years ago this woman was pregnant.”

“And she took the money.”

Damian looked toward me.

“Did you really take two million?”

I hugged the folder to my chest. The little elephant pendant swung lightly on Luka’s jacket and warned me with a silver flash that one wrong word would return me to the same trap.

“If I took it, why did I live for five years in a small rented apartment where the wind came through the window in winter?”

“Maybe you wanted to hide,” Victoria said.

“Maybe you wanted him to think that.”

Damian’s assistant took us to a small café away from the crowd. It was four o’clock in the evening. A sticky ring of spilled coffee remained on the café table, while Luka and Nika were breaking apart chocolate cake with their forks. I watched them and repeated to myself: do not be afraid. This time you are no longer alone.

Damian sat opposite me.

“Tell me everything.”

“Then first tell me why you never contacted me.”

He ran his hand over his forehead.

“My mother told me you went to the clinic. She told me the children no longer existed and that you had signed for two million.”

“And you never checked even once?”

“I believed her.”

“No, Damian. You wanted to believe her.”

His eyes went toward the children again. Nika was eating quietly, while Luka was drawing a car on the cake paper. Damian saw in their faces something from which he could no longer escape.

“Why didn’t you tell me they were born?”

“I sent you letters.”

Damian was stunned.

“I received nothing.”

I took an old phone from my bag. Its screen was cracked, but the messages were still saved. Dates from five years earlier were visible. Three letters, two voice messages, and one photograph in which the newborns were touching each other’s fingers.

“I sent this to your personal address. There was no answer.”

Damian took the phone. His fingers were trembling.

“I no longer have this address.”

“Your secretary gave me that address.”

Victoria pushed her chair back noisily.

“Enough of this performance.”

“Sit down,” Damian said.

His voice surprised even him. His mother slowly returned to her place.

“This woman is using the children against you,” she said. “She already tried once to break up your family.”

“Family?” I asked. “You did not remember family when your son handed me the envelope.”

Damian raised his head.

“What was in that envelope?”

There was no color left in Victoria’s face.

I opened the folder, but showed him only the first page. The clinic stamp was clearly visible. The date matched the eighth month of the pregnancy, when Victoria claimed that I had already finished everything.

“The doctor gave this to me. He told me I should keep a copy if your family ever denied the truth.”

Damian leaned forward.

“What document is this?”

“The answer to your oldest question.”

“Then show it to me now.”

Victoria jumped up.

“No! Damian, you must not open that folder.”

I saw her reflection in the café glass. For the first time she no longer looked like the powerful woman who could destroy my life with one sweep of her hand.

Damian placed his hand on the folder.

“Mother, what are you hiding?”

Victoria opened her mouth, but could not find an answer. At that moment a tall woman appeared at the café entrance, holding a leather bag. She walked toward me and addressed Damian:

“Mr. Mercer, as you told me, I brought all the originals. Now you should know that your mother did not hide these documents only from me. She registered them in your name…”

The woman placed the last page of the folder on the table and opened it…

The woman placed the last page of the folder on the table and opened it. It was Elena Sori, my former lawyer, the only person who had believed me during those years.

Damian looked at the page. After a few seconds his face became so white that it seemed all the blood had left it.

“This signature…” he said.

“It is yours,” Elena answered. “But you never saw this document.”

Victoria struck the table with her hand.

“This is forged!”

Elena took a small voice recorder from her leather bag. Its red light came on, and a voice from five years earlier sounded in the café.

“Damian must not find out that Mara is giving birth to the children. Tell him that she took the money and everything is over.”

It was Victoria’s voice.

In the second recording she continued:

“Two million will be transferred from the company fund. Mara will sign that she will not contact us. If she refuses, we will frighten her with court and taking the children away.”

Luka put down his fork. Nika rested his head on my shoulder. I felt as if a door locked in my chest for years had opened, and both pain and air had come out of it at once.

Damian looked at his mother.

“Did you tell me this?”

Victoria grabbed the chair.

“I was protecting you.”

“From my children?”

“From your career! That woman wanted money.”

“She did not take the money,” Elena said and raised another paper. “Two million was transferred by Victoria Mercer into a charitable fund controlled by her. Then the money was distributed among three companies and finally returned to her personal account.”

Damian took the paper not roughly, but almost carefully. His eyes followed the figures.

“You stole my company’s money.”

“I saved your future.”

“No, Mother. You stole my life.”

I watched his pain and felt a strange emptiness. For years I had imagined how this day would come, how I would shout, how I would tell him that Damian had sold my pregnancy for money. But now I no longer needed to shout. The truth lay on the table and spoke for itself.

!!!  My sister did not invite me to the royal wedding, but when I came to her door dressed in uniform, her smile disappeared

Damian looked toward me.

“Mara, are the children truly my children?”

Elena took out a small sealed envelope.

“I received the genetic laboratory’s result this morning. It was tested on two independent samples. The match is ninety-nine point nine percent.”

Damian closed his eyes.

“They are my children.”

“They have always been your children,” I told him. “You simply ran away from their existence.”

Victoria slowly stood up.

“Damian, let’s go home.”

“You go home.”

“I am your mother.”

“That is exactly why it hurts the most.”

Silence fell over the café. Elena switched off the recorder, but her voice still remained in the air.

Damian looked at the children.

“May I speak with them?”

Luka looked at Nika. I bent down.

“Only if they want to.”

Damian knelt before them. His expensive watch touched the edge of the table and a sharp sound rang on the glass surface.

“I am Damian Mercer. You probably do not yet know who I am.”

“Did you hurt Mom?” Nika asked directly.

Damian cleared his throat.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He searched for an answer for a long time.

“Because I was a coward.”

Luka pushed the folded paper car toward him.

“Then don’t be anymore.”

Damian took the car and began to cry. Quietly, without covering his face.

At that very moment Elena’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and her expression changed.

“Mara, it’s the police. They have already begun an investigation into Victoria, but this is not the worst part.”

“What else happened?”

Elena looked at Damian.

“The company board discovered that, besides this money, another twenty-two million was taken out through the same scheme during the last five years. And every transfer carries your electronic approval.”

Damian looked at the phone. At that moment its screen lit up. The message said that he had been temporarily removed from managing the company.

Victoria whispered quietly:

“We have lost everything.”

Elena answered:

“No. You have only lost control so far. The rest begins now…”
