Part 4 — My Sister Threw Me into the Pool with My Injured Arm and Called It an Accident — Until Her Fiancé’s Smile Disappeared

The call from Niko’s school set everything in motion again.

The police officer blocked Vanessa’s way.

“Ms. Vanessa, you are coming with me.”

“I am the child’s aunt,” she replied. “His mother is injured and I am obliged to take care of him.”

“Do you have the right to take the child?”

Vanessa fell silent.

Daniel took documents from my bag and handed them to the police officer. There was a copy of Niko’s birth certificate, my custody documents, and the short letter Vanessa had sent me several days earlier: “If anything happens to you, the child will be with me.”

At the time, I had not taken it as a threat.

Now the words on the paper were like a knife.

“I have already sent a warning to the school,” Daniel told me. “They will hand Niko over only to you or to a person designated by you in advance.”

“When did you manage to do all this?”

“When Vanessa prepared the first letter in your name.”

The police officer did not put handcuffs on Vanessa. He only asked her to come to the station for now, but it was visible from her face that she had already lost control.

“Daniel, you will regret this,” she said.

“Maybe,” he replied. “But I would regret marrying you more.”

Vanessa was taken away.

I was taken to the ambulance. My right shoulder still burned, and the leather strap of the copper whistle had cut into my neck. The nurse carefully removed it and placed it in my palm.

“Is this your jewelry?”

“No,” I told her. “It is a reminder that I must speak up.”

In the evening Daniel came to the small room in the clinic. He stood at the door holding a glass full of water.

“The doctor said no bone was broken, but the nerves are still irritated.”

“Niko?”

“I picked him up from school. He is with your mother. He is calm.”

“He should have been with me.”

“The doctors forbade you to be alone today.”

“I am his mother.”

“I know. That is why I protected him, so that until you returned home I would not add a second fear for him.”

!!!  Vanessa bloqueó mi granero durante una emergencia y sonrió mientras todos grababan; entonces mi bulldozer hizo temblar su seguridad

That night I listened to the audio recording all the way through for the first time.

It was a conversation recorded in the lawyer’s office. In the recording, Vanessa said in a confident voice that she would cover the credit debt with my insurance money, pay for the wedding, and then manage to “calm Elena down.”

I heard my own sister’s voice.

Not as I heard it on the phone or at a family table.

From the outside.

Coldly. Deliberately. Ruthlessly.

“Do you understand now?” Daniel asked me.

“I understand that all this time I was inventing excuses for her.”

“Why?”

“Because if I admitted who she was, I would also have to admit that her love had not existed for a long time.”

The next day Vanessa requested a meeting with me. The police allowed us to talk in the clinic café, but there was a camera in the room and the door remained open.

She looked tired. For the first time she was not wearing expensive earrings. I noticed one white strand in her hair.

“Elena, everything was not as it appears in the recording.”

“That is your voice in the recording.”

“I was in debt.”

“I understood that.”

“Daniel was leaving me. The wedding would be canceled. I would be defeated in front of everyone.”

“So you decided to injure my body?”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I did not want death.”

“But you wanted me to be injured again.”

She could not answer that.

In the silence, only the hum of the coffee machine could be heard.

“But you are my sister,” she said at last.

“That is exactly why I trusted you.”

“You can take everything back. Tell the police that I was emotional. Say that the recording was taken out of context.”

“I have already told them the truth.”

Her lips moved.

“And Niko? He likes being with me.”

“He likes visiting you. That does not mean you should use him against his mother.”

Vanessa raised her head.

“You were always better. Better job, better husband, better life. Couldn’t you yield to me just once?”

Then I understood that she was asking me not for love, but for defeat.

“I have taken nothing from you, Vanessa.”

“You took everything from me.”

“No. You abandoned everything that was in your hands yourself.”

The following weeks passed quickly and with heavy steps.

The police confirmed the pool camera recording, the audio recording, and the attempt to falsify my insurance documents. Larisa Hall began cooperating when she realized that all correspondence had been saved. She testified against Vanessa and gave up practicing as a lawyer.

Daniel canceled all the wedding expenses.

The hotel returned the money to me in full, and the employees apologized to me. The manager told me that the security recordings would be kept forever.

The court gave Vanessa a suspended sentence, a large fine, and a prohibition on approaching me and Niko. The insurance money remained in my account. I did not take a single lari from her.

I was not happy about her punishment.

I simply was no longer trying to protect her from the consequences she had created herself.

Three months later, at the physical therapy center, I was still learning to raise my right arm. In the small room there were white walls, rubber bands, and a faint smell of lavender.

“Two more centimeters, Elena,” the therapist told me.

I clenched my teeth.

“Two more.”

Niko sat by the window and was drawing. When I finished the exercise, he held out the drawing to me.

Three people were drawn on it: me, himself, and Daniel. A yellow sun burned above them. He had not drawn the pool.

“Why isn’t Aunt Vanessa there?” I asked carefully.

Niko shrugged.

“Because this is our new home.”

We moved into a new apartment by the river, with a small balcony. In the mornings Niko walked to school, while I made tea in the kitchen and kept records of my exercises. I began working from home for a rehabilitation center, where I helped people injured after accidents organize their documents.

I often met women who told me that no one listened to them.

I listened.

In December the first snow came. Niko put a small snowman on the balcony, with two red paper circles instead of eyes. And for the first time I managed to open the window with my right hand.

That same evening I received a letter from Vanessa.

!!!  Part 4 — After the Divorce, I Entered a New York Hotel with My Six-Year-Old Daughter, but My Ex-Husband’s Face Suddenly Went Pale

“I am not asking you to forget me. Only talk to me once. Maybe we can start everything over.”

I looked at the letter for a long time.

Then I picked up the phone and wrote a short reply:

“I am not starting over. I am continuing from here. Please do not contact me again.”

After sending it, nothing happened for a long time.

Neither fear.

Nor guilt.

Only peace.

Later Daniel opened his own small studio and sometimes took Niko to football. We were not together in the way I had thought before the pool. But he became a person who had a place in my life not because of rescue, but because of respect.

One morning, as I was getting ready to leave the house, I put my grandmother’s small copper whistle around my neck again. The strap was new, while the old one was kept in a drawer, with the same scratch the pool tile had left on it.

Niko looked at me.

“You are wearing it again?”

“Now for a different reason.”

“Why?”

I opened the window. Clean snowy air came in from outside.

“So that I remember that there is a voice in me too.”

The whistle flashed in the sunlight.

This time its sound was not needed to save anyone.

I was already standing on the shore.

Missed the beginning?
