Part 4 — The night before the wedding, the groom announced that he would stay at a hotel with another woman, but when he knocked on my door, his mother turned pale

An investigator stood behind Sebastian, while at the door the notary was checking the documents.

I looked at Esteban.

“Where was the account opened?”

“At one of the capital’s private banks. Yesterday morning. The copy of the identity document is fake, but the signature was copied very precisely.”

“Did any money leave?”

“No. The bank blocked it because it considered the first transfer order suspicious.”

Sebastian raised his head.

“I know nothing about this.”

“No one is asking you yet,” I said calmly. “Soon they will.”

Adriana immediately took out her phone and called someone.

“Mario, come immediately. You have to stop everything.”

She listened for several seconds and her face changed.

“What do you mean, you no longer represent our family?”

She slowly lowered the phone.

“The lawyer refused to defend them,” Esteban said. “The bank informed him that he has a conflict of interest in a possible fraud case.”

Sebastian looked toward the door.

“Camila, tell them this was your idea.”

Camila closed her eyes.

“No. You were the first to say that Valentina was too soft.”

Those words seemed to stand in the middle of the room.

The next day Sebastian heard his own voice for the first time in the courtroom’s preparatory room. The audio recording came from a small speaker. Lawyers, investigators, a bank representative, and the four of us were sitting in the room.

“As soon as the money enters the fund, we will transfer it to another account,” Sebastian was saying in the recording.

The recorded Sebastian said this calmly. The living Sebastian, however, was twisting in his chair.

The judge stopped the playback.

“Is that your voice?”

Sebastian licked his lips.

“The conversation was taken out of context.”

“Is that your voice?”

After a long silence he lowered his head.

“Yes.”

I was sitting beside him with my hands placed on my knees. I did not want to humiliate him. I only wanted him, at least once, to be unable to hide his own words from someone else.

!!!  PART 4 — My husband’s fiancée used my surname on her wedding invitation, but when I mentioned one stolen bracelet, his face went white

It took several weeks for all the documents to be examined. The bank confirmed that the fake account had been opened from Adriana’s family office computer. The hotel video showed how Camila brought the documents into the room and how Sebastian entered afterward.

Camila confessed everything.

Adriana shifted the responsibility onto her son.

And Sebastian repeated until the very last minute that he had wanted to “prepare a surprise” for me.

The court ultimately considered the annulment of the marriage and the property-fraud case separately. My family did not start a public war. We simply submitted all the documents and let the truth take its course.

Sebastian’s access to the accounts was restricted, Adriana’s company was ordered to undergo an audit, and Camila partially admitted responsibility in exchange for cooperating with the investigation.

It was not a victory that came with noise.

It was a door that I finally locked from the inside.

The civil marriage was annulled several months later. That day Sebastian stood alone in the courthouse corridor. He was no longer wearing the expensive watch. On his wrist there was only a faint white mark.

“Valentina, talk to me one more time,” he said.

“I’m listening.”

“We can start everything over.”

“No, Sebastian.”

“I have changed.”

“You simply lost what you were getting from me.”

He lowered his head.

“I still love you.”

This time his words did not enter me anymore.

“Love does not make a person steal your signature.”

Several months later I left my old apartment. Every corner there reminded me of Sebastian’s family plans, Camila’s unexpected calls, and endless compromises.

I moved into a small, bright apartment on the other side of the city. In the mornings I heard the sound of trams from the window. In the kitchen I had a ceramic cup with a small yellow sun painted on it. Before, I had always made coffee according to Sebastian’s taste. Now I added as much sugar as I wanted.

!!!  Part 4 — Sara told me that she alone would decide our meetings, but two weeks later she stopped at my door crying and her hand trembled

I returned to my father’s company full-time. I led a new project that built affordable housing for women. For the first time in a long while, my work no longer meant only protecting money. I was creating something.

My mother came to me every week. One evening my little nephew, Leon, put a drawing on the table.

In the drawing a woman stood in front of a large house. She held a key in her hand, and the sun was shining above.

“That is you,” Leon told me.

“Why do I have such a big key?”

“Because you open the door yourself.”

His words proved stronger than all the court decisions.

At the beginning of winter the first snow came. The streets quietly turned white. I went out onto the balcony, still holding the small wooden box in which the wedding ring had once lain.

I no longer had the ring. I returned it together with the legally annulled marriage.

But I kept the box.

Not because of Sebastian.

Because of the night when I first dared not to sacrifice my own peace anymore at the price of someone else’s wishes.

Sebastian sent his last message one morning in March.

“Can we meet just once? This time I will not ask you for anything.”

I stared at the screen for a long time. Then I wrote:

“I have already met the person with whom I want to live. Myself.”

I blocked his number.

That evening Leon called me again.

“Auntie, the snow is melting. Where is your big key?”

“Here,” I said, looking at the wooden box.

I placed the box on the windowsill. The last ray of sunlight fell on its lid and illuminated the small star engraved on it.

That night I locked the door myself.

And for the first time I did not wait for anyone.

Missed the beginning?
