The Husband Did Not Call at His Mother’s Funeral, but When His Lawyer Opened the Folder, Brandon’s Smile Disappeared

That night I was standing in the hospital corridor when Brandon finally answered me and I heard an unfamiliar woman’s laughter behind him.

“Lucia, stop calling,” he said to me irritably. “I’m very busy right now.”

A sharp smell of antiseptic hung in the corridor. And in my hand I still remembered the touch of Rosalind’s cold fingers. Her pulse had stopped twelve minutes earlier.

“Where are you?” I asked.

Instead of an answer, I heard the sound of waves.

Then a woman’s voice:

“Brandon, darling, come back here!”

Laughter followed. Music was playing in the background, as if someone were holding a festive party by a pool.

I closed my eyes.

“Your mother has died,” I said at last.

Silence fell on the other end for several seconds.

Then he said quietly:

“I don’t have time for this now.”

The call ended.

I had been entrusted with Rosalind for seven years. After the stroke, Brandon put his hand on mine at the kitchen table and promised me that we would share everything.

“She is my mother, Lucia. I won’t leave you alone.”

But three weeks later his promise disappeared. I prepared her medicines, took her to doctors, and spent nights by her bed. Brandon, meanwhile, said he had an important project.

That night, as her breathing was fading, Rosalind opened her eyes. There were only me and the monitor’s green light in the room.

She squeezed my fingers and put something cold into my palm.

It was a small silver key, with a crescent-shaped scratch on its head.

“What is this?” I whispered.

Rosalind barely moved her lips.

“Enough.”

“What is enough?”

She looked at the ceiling, as if she saw someone there, then looked at me again.

“Stop saving.”

Those turned out to be her last words.

I arranged the funeral for two days later. Brandon’s family accused me the very first morning.

“Where is Brandon?” his sister Miranda asked me.

“In Honolulu.”

“You let him go and now you are hiding him from us?”

I knew that Brandon had reserved a room for two people, had bought a diamond bracelet in an expensive store, and had not been alone. But I said nothing.

At the wake, the lawyer Arthur Pendleton came. His gaze immediately moved to my clenched fist.

“Rosalind gave you the key, didn’t she?”

My breath caught.

“How do you know?”

“Because this detail was written in her letter.”

He handed me a small piece of paper.

“Come to my office tomorrow morning.”

“Why?”

Arthur answered me quietly:

“Your mother-in-law left you evidence.”

“Against whom?”

He lowered his eyes for a moment.

“Against her son.”

That night I returned home, placed my wedding ring on the divorce papers, and sent Brandon only one message: “I was by your mother’s side until her last breath. From now on, speak to me only through my lawyer.”

Then I took my suitcase and left the house.

But the next morning, in Arthur’s office, I discovered that the silver key was only the first door. He took me down to the basement of an old building, stopped me by an iron cabinet, and put his hand on the folder.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich kam früher aus dem Auslandseinsatz zurück und fand meine schwangere Frau auf den Knien, während meine Mutter plötzlich verstummte

“Before you open it, you should know that after this there will be no going back,” he told me.

I put the key into the lock. Arthur leaned toward me and slowly ran his fingers along the other side of the lock. Then he reached toward the folder…

Arthur’s fingers touched the black folder, but before he could open it, the door opened and the office’s young secretary rushed in with a frightened face.

“Mr. Pendleton, Brandon has landed.”

Coldness poured into my stomach.

“Already?” Arthur asked.

“He is coming straight here. The security guard said that he is asking to meet you.”

Arthur put the folder back in the drawer and took the key from me.

“We cannot open it now.”

“Why?”

“Because if Brandon sees that it is with you, he may destroy everything.”

“He has already destroyed everything,” I replied. “His mother’s last days, my marriage, and his own face.”

A fist struck the door.

“Lucia!” I recognized Brandon’s voice. “I know you are here!”

The secretary covered her lips with her hand. Arthur pointed toward the basement door.

“You will leave through the back exit.”

“No. This time I will not run away.”

Brandon entered as if the office belonged to him. He was wearing a Hawaiian shirt, a new watch on his wrist, while the sleepless night on the airplane showed under his eyes.

“Where is my mother?” he asked me.

I looked straight at him.

“Buried.”

His face changed in one second.

“What did you say?”

“She died two days ago. We buried her today.”

“You should have called me!”

“I called you thirty times.”

“Probably at the wrong time.”

“You were by the pool. With a woman.”

His jaw tightened.

“Be careful, Lucia.”

“You are telling me that for the first time when I am no longer afraid of anything.”

Arthur stood by the table.

“Mr. Brandon, all communication concerning your mother’s will will be with me.”

“You stay out of this, Arthur.”

“You can no longer give me orders.”

Brandon leaned toward me.

“You are coming home. You have no claim to my mother’s property.”

“I have asked for nothing.”

“Then why are you dragging that key to this man?”

My blood froze. He should not have known about the key.

Arthur looked at him sternly.

“You knew about the key?”

Brandon realized that he had given himself away.

“Mother was confused. Sick people give strange things to one another.”

“Her mind was clear until she died,” I said.

“You were turning her against me.”

Those words fell into the room like a heavy object.

Arthur answered calmly:

“Your mother left me sealed instructions six months ago. The key was intended for Lucia. If she died and you were not by her side, everything was to be opened by her.”

Brandon turned toward me.

“What do you mean, ‘everything’?”

“You will find out tomorrow,” Arthur said.

Brandon grabbed my hand. His fingers painfully closed around my wrist.

“This is a family matter.”

I pulled my hand free.

“No. This is the matter your family hid for years.”

That same evening Arthur found a small apartment for me and moved the basement items there. Only then did he open the folder. Inside were bank statements, telephone records, several recordings, and an old photograph in which Rosalind and a young Brandon were standing.

There was something written on the back of the photograph, but Arthur first put his hand on it.

“First listen to this recording.”

From the old device came Rosalind’s hoarse but clear voice:

“If Lucia is hearing this, it means Brandon is trying to deceive everyone again. But he must not know that I made a second copy too.”

The recording suddenly stopped.

At that same moment Arthur’s phone rang. He listened, whispered a few words, and his face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

He slowly put the phone on the table.

“The police said that Brandon tried to enter your apartment this evening.”

“I left nothing there.”

“No,” Arthur told me. “But the door camera recorded that he was not alone. There was a woman beside him, the one who was in Honolulu. And the woman has already spoken to the police…”

The woman had already told the police that Brandon had asked her to testify against Lucia. Arthur turned on the speakerphone, while I stood frozen at the small kitchen table.

“He told me that Lucia was mentally unstable and was stealing his mother’s money,” the woman said in a trembling voice. “He told me that if I confirmed this, he would pay for my hotel and tickets.”

“Your name?” Arthur asked.

“Celesta Moore.”

The call ended.

I held on to the chair so I would not fall.

“Why did he want to accuse me?”

Instead of answering, Arthur opened the old folder. Then he fitted the silver key into the lock of a small iron box. The lock clicked twice.

Inside the box were three memory cards, signed bank documents, and an envelope. On the envelope was written: “For Lucia. Only in Arthur’s presence.”

“Open it,” I said.

Arthur cut the seal.

The first document showed transfers of money from my mother’s accounts. The money was transferred every month to a company in which Brandon was secretly listed as the owner. In total there were four hundred thousand lari.

“This is impossible,” I whispered.

“In the last six months Rosalind discovered that Brandon was using her pension and savings to pay off his own debts,” Arthur said. “And you were a convenient target for him.”

Then we played the recording.

Brandon’s voice rang through the room:

“If Mother dies, Lucia will sign everything. She thinks we are family. In two days I will take back the house and the accounts too.”

A man’s voice asked:

“And if she refuses?”

“Then I will say that she was not giving Mother her medicines. People always believe the person who cries the loudest.”

The recording ended.

My knees gave way. For years I had prepared Rosalind’s medicines with minute-by-minute precision, while Brandon was preparing my kindness as a weapon.

“There is more,” Arthur told me.

He turned the back of the old photograph toward me. In Rosalind’s handwriting it said: “Lucia, I chose you because even on that day you told the truth when everyone chose silence. Brandon is afraid not because of your marriage, but because of your conscience. Run from him before he turns it into your guilt.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“She knew.”

“She knew everything,” Arthur said. “And she sent the second copy to the police one day before her death.”

The door opened so suddenly that we both jumped. Brandon was standing on the threshold. We had not heard how he came in.

“This is fake,” he said.

“That is your voice,” I replied.

“It is edited.”

“The bank transfers too?”

He looked at Arthur.

“Mother did not know what she was doing.”

“She did,” Arthur said. “And you also knew that the cameras were working.”

Brandon took a step toward me.

“Lucia, come home with me. I will explain everything.”

“I do not want explanations anymore.”

For the first time, his face lost its confidence.

At that moment a new message arrived on Arthur’s phone. He read it and went pale.

“What happened?” I asked.

Arthur turned the screen toward me. The message was from the police: they had opened Rosalind’s second copy, and another audio file had been found in it.

“This file was sent directly to the court investigator,” he said. “But no one has listened to it yet.”

For the first time Brandon stepped back.

The next day that file would be opened, although Brandon still did not understand why an urgent summons was written in his name…
