I was standing in the hospital corridor, and in my hand I held such a heavy bag that my fingers hurt, when I heard my husband’s voice from my sister’s room.
I had carefully packed everything in the bag: a cream-colored blanket, small white bodysuits, an expensive wooden toy, and a silver music box that had cost me more for the baby’s birth than I had ever dared spend on myself. When the box was opened, a small moon turned and a calm melody played.
I thought this day would unite the whole family.
Then I heard Vance’s voice.
The door was not fully closed. I held my breath and moved closer to the wall.
“Don’t worry about Daniel,” Vance was saying. “He will continue paying the expenses. He is sure the baby is his.”
The bag handle tightened in my hand.
Rebecca laughed quietly.
“What will Valerie do?”
“Valerie will do everything we ask. She still thinks I am on her side. When she sells her shares, we will have enough money to settle everything and leave.”
Suddenly the corridor lights became too bright. It was as if the whole world had gathered into one point.
“Our child will have my surname,” Vance added.
I needed nothing more.
My husband was with my sister. The child whom the family was celebrating as Daniel’s was actually Vance’s child. But the most terrible thing was that they were already discussing my money as their shared future.
I did not enter the room.
I did not shout.
I left the gifts on the wooden bench in the corridor. The music box slightly protruded from the bag, and its silver moon shone coldly under the light. At that moment I realized that the gift bought a few minutes earlier had become the heaviest thing in my life.
I got into the car and gripped the steering wheel with both hands. My hands were trembling, but one phrase was turning in my mind: my shares.
If they were only lovers, why did they need my property?
As soon as I returned home, I opened the joint bank account. There should have been almost one hundred and sixty thousand dollars. On the screen, however, I found only five thousand four hundred dollars.
I checked the transactions one by one. More than one hundred and forty thousand dollars had been transferred to a company whose name I had never heard — Horizon Vital.
The company had been established recently. Rebecca’s surname stood on the list of founders.
Mother’s message arrived then.
We need another ten thousand tomorrow to pay for Rebecca’s hospital room. Will you pay?
I read the message three times. Then I wrote: Of course.
They did not know that the same night I requested a credit report. In the morning I discovered three cards opened in my name and a seventy-five-thousand-dollar business loan for which I was the guarantor. The signature looked like mine, but I had never made it.
I photographed and saved everything and wrote down the dates. Then I hid the notebook of notes in the upper kitchen cabinet, behind the flour jar.
In the evening Vance came in calmly, put down his bag, and kissed my forehead.
“How are you?”
“Fine.”
“Things have become difficult for me. I need one last investment.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know. We will probably have to sell part of your shares.”
“For our future?”
“Exactly.”
His voice was so gentle that at another time I would have believed him. Now I had to listen to my own lie.
A few days later my father, Arthur, arranged a family dinner. Hot bread lay on the table, but no one in the house was hungry. After dinner Father opened a folder.
“Valerie, we need to settle the matter of your apartment,” Mother, Beatrice, said.
“My apartment?”
“Rebecca needs a larger house for the baby.”
“And therefore?”
“You must give the apartment to her.”
Vance tapped his fingers on the chair.
“Don’t be so stubborn.”
“Why does my apartment concern you so much?”
Silence fell over the room. Just then Daniel appeared at the door. He held a folder and was so pale that it seemed he had not slept all night.
“Valerie, wait for me,” he said. “I found something that changes all this.”
He opened the folder and took out the first sheet. My name was written on it. Daniel put his hand on the corner of the sheet and said quietly:
“Before you read this, you should know that Vance is not simply cheating on you. He…”
“He is arranging something much bigger in your name,” Daniel finished and placed the sheet on the table.
There was a hospital stamp on the document. It said that I was the payer for Rebecca’s treatment and childbirth expenses. But the amounts were larger than those Mother mentioned in her messages.
“Is this signature mine?” I asked.
“No,” Daniel told me. “It looks very similar, but several letters are made differently. I worked in the financial department before I lost my job. I know how to compare documents.”
My father’s face immediately tensed.
“Daniel, don’t interfere in family matters.”
“Family matters?” Daniel smiled bitterly. “I am raising a child with my money who may not be mine. This is already my business.”
Rebecca came out of the other room. On her wrist she wore the bronze bracelet Mother had given me in childhood and later passed on to Rebecca. The bracelet’s little leaf touched the table with every movement.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
Vance stood up.
“Nothing. Daniel simply has doubts.”
“Not doubts; I have documents,” Daniel replied.
I took the folder.
“I want everyone to answer me right now. Why was my name used in the accounts connected with Horizon Vital?”
Mother pressed her lips together.
“You are exaggerating everything. Vance works for you.”
“Then why were our savings transferred to Rebecca’s company?”
Vance leaned toward me.
“Let’s talk at home.”
“No. We will talk here.”
For the first time something entered my voice that even he did not recognize. I knew where it came from. It was the resentment accumulated over years, which I would no longer allow to remain silent.
Daniel took out another sheet.
“Here it is shown that Horizon Vital received payments through the hospital. The company supposedly buys medical equipment, but not a single real supplier exists.”
“Is this money laundering?” I asked.
“Possibly. And if the loan document is also forged, they may leave you responsible for everything.”
Irritation appeared on Vance’s face for the first time.
“Daniel, be careful.”
“You should be careful,” he replied.
That night, on the way home, Vance remained silent the entire time. I sat beside him and noticed for the first time a thin white thread caught under the glass of his watch. I used to laugh at it. Now even this insignificant detail looked like danger.
At home he locked the door.
“Who did you talk to?” he asked.
“Daniel.”
“Keep away from him.”
“Why?”
“Because he has his own problems.”
“More problems than my money?”
Vance fell silent.
I went to the kitchen as if to drink water. In reality I turned on my phone and quietly recorded his voice from the second phone lying on the table.
“I don’t know what you think,” he said, “but you must decide tomorrow to sell the shares.”
“What if I don’t sell?”
“Then you will make life difficult for everyone.”
“Everyone who?”
His breathing became heavier.
“The family.”
That night I went to the lawyer, Nora Marcos. It was nine in the evening in the office. Raindrops ran down the window, and a green lamp lit the desk.
Nora read every sheet carefully.
“You must freeze the accounts immediately,” she told me. “You must also cancel any power of attorney you gave Vance.”
“I gave him nothing.”
“Then someone forged your signature.”
“And if I go to the police?”
“First we must protect the evidence. The phone, email, bank statements, hospital records. Delete nothing.”},{
At the end Nora placed a small memory card in front of me.
“Daniel gave me this. It is a recording from a camera installed at the hospital entrance. He said I should warn you before you watch it: the video shows someone you know.”
When I returned home, Vance was waiting for me in the living room. Documents concerning my shares were spread on the sofa.
“Were you with Nora?” he asked.
My heart contracted.
“How do you know?”
He did not answer anything. He only placed his hand on the table.
“Tomorrow morning we are going to the bank together.”
“What if I don’t go?”
“Then we may lose everything that remains.”
“I have already lost a lot.”
His phone rang. Rebecca’s name appeared on the screen. Vance did not answer the call, but a message came immediately. He quickly covered the screen, but I still read the words: Daniel is here. Now I need to know what you are doing.
At that moment I realized that Daniel was not merely in doubts. He had gone somewhere where they were waiting for an answer from us.
I called Nora.
“We must watch the video today.”
It was raining again in her office. She inserted the memory card into her computer, and the hospital’s back entrance appeared on the screen. The time indicator moved slowly. Then Vance appeared in the frame, but he was not alone.
Nora paused the video.
“Valerie, prepare yourself. The person standing beside him is holding exactly the folder Daniel told you about…”
The face of the person standing beside Vance became clearly visible on the screen.
It was my mother, Beatrice.
In her hands she held a copy of my passport and a list of bank cards. In the video Mother handed the folder to Vance and then entered through the hospital’s back door. The time indicator showed that this happened two days before Rebecca gave birth.
I stood up from the chair.
“This is impossible.”
“Unfortunately, it is possible,” Nora said. “Now we must see the main evidence.”
She opened a second file. There was a copy of an audio recording that Daniel had obtained from the hospital administrator. Vance’s voice could be heard in the recording.
“Valerie will sign everything if we tell her that we are asking for the apartment for Rebecca’s baby. The easiest thing will be to control her through her guilt.”
My mother’s voice answered:
“The apartment documents are already ready. After the shares are sold, Vance will close Horizon Vital and the money will move to a new account.”
The recording was silent for several seconds.
Then Rebecca said:
“Daniel must remain the child’s father. If he finds out the truth, everything will collapse.”
Vance’s voice sounded low, almost in a whisper.
“The child is mine. No one can change that.”
Silence fell.
I stared at the screen, but it was as if I were watching my own life from outside. My mother, sister, and husband were planning to rob me together. My house was to become their gift to Rebecca, my money their fuel for escape, and Daniel the man they had deceived for years.
Nora turned off the sound.
“This is enough for the court to request temporary protection. But the child’s paternity must also be confirmed.”
That same evening Daniel took us to a clinic. The room had white walls and a sharp smell of antiseptic. Rebecca sat on a chair, Vance stood behind her, and Mother was twisting her hands by the window.
“Why did you bring me here?” Rebecca asked.
Daniel did not answer. For the first time I looked at my sister as if she were a stranger.
“Because everyone must learn the truth.”
Vance stepped forward.
“Valerie, this is madness. Daniel is currently in an emotional state.”
“You created the emotional state.”
The clinic doctor opened the envelope and read the results. The child’s genetic relation to Daniel was excluded. Then he looked at Vance.
“The genetic data confirms that the child’s biological father is Vance.”
The phone slipped from Rebecca’s hand. The device lying on the floor flashed twice.
Daniel leaned against the wall.
“Three years,” he said quietly. “For three years I raised this child as my own.”
“Daniel, I wanted to tell you…” Rebecca began.
“When? When you had spent my last money too?”
Vance raised his hand.
“The child is my responsibility.”
“No,” I said. “Now, for the first time, the child is your responsibility.”
Mother began to cry.
“The family is falling apart.”
“The family fell apart the moment you forged my signature.”
Nora laid the documents on the table.
“Here are the bank statements, the camera recording, the audio, and the preliminary conclusion of the examination of the loan signature. Valerie will request the accounts be frozen and an investigation be started today.”
Vance leaned toward me.
“If you do this, Rebecca and the child will lose everything.”
“You decided that I should lose everything.”
At that moment Daniel’s phone rang. He listened, his face changed, and he looked at Nora.
“The bank is calling. Another transfer has been made to Horizon Vital’s account.”
“When?” I asked.
“Ten minutes ago.”
Nora opened my bank account and looked at the screen.
“Valerie, the transfer was authorized in your name. If we do not stop it this minute, responsibility will pass to you.”
I looked at Vance. He was no longer becoming pale. On the contrary, he had become strangely calm.
“Did you do this?” I asked.
He took out his phone, and an unknown number appeared on the screen. He answered the call, listened for several seconds, and then said only one thing:
“The plan has changed. Valerie found out everything.”
As soon as the call ended, a message arrived on Nora’s phone. She read it and looked straight at me.
“The police already have a request for an arrest warrant issued in your name. Someone reported that you appropriated the money…”
