Part 4 — My family members wanted to take away my house and money, but one document suddenly made Vance pale

“That was the second transfer,” Nora said. “They decided to pin the crime on you.”

Everyone in the room fell silent.

For the first time Vance lost control.

“This is impossible. I did not tell anyone to act this way.”

“But you created everything that made it possible,” I said.

Nora picked up the phone.

“I have already frozen the accounts. The bank stopped the additional transfer and the investigative team is on its way.”

Vance moved toward me.

“Valerie, listen to me. This was not all my decision. Rebecca was frightened, and your mother said that you would leave everything to us anyway.”

Rebecca raised her head.

“Don’t use my name.”

“You told me the child was Daniel’s.”

“You promised me that you would not hurt Valerie.”

“I did not know your mother would forge the signatures.”

My mother turned her back to the window.

“I was simply helping the family.”

“Taking out a loan in a person’s name is not help,” Daniel said.

There was a knock at the door.

Two investigators came in. They calmly took the documents from Nora and asked Vance for his identification. For several seconds he could not understand what was happening, as if he had threatened others his whole life and could not imagine that someone would ever simply stand before him.

“I will call a lawyer,” he said.

“Call one,” Nora replied. “But first you should know that the case against you is not only about money. There is forgery, fraud, and organizing financial crime.”

Vance took out his phone and called his lawyer. He listened for several seconds.

“You must come immediately.”

After the reply, his face changed.

“No, I will no longer enter your case,” came from the phone so loudly that everyone in the room heard it. “I have already received the documents. This is no longer a family dispute.”

Vance slowly lowered the phone.

That same night I returned home alone. The police took Vance and my mother for questioning, while Rebecca remained at the hospital with the baby. Daniel stood in the corridor and looked through the glass of the baby’s room.

“He has done nothing wrong,” he told me.

“I know.”

“That is why I cannot hate him.”

“There is no need to.”

When I got home, everything in the living room was as I had left it. Only one thing had changed: Vance’s work bag was lying on the floor. A small recorder had fallen from his pocket.

Nora told me that I had to listen.

I turned it on.

My voice was heard first, from several days earlier.

“For our future?”

Then Vance’s laughter.

“Exactly. If she does not believe me, her mother and Rebecca will convince her.”

My own voice sounded strangely foreign in the room. Then my question was heard:

“Everyone who?”

Vance’s answer was clear.

“The family.”

My hand rested on the edge of the table. For the first time I heard not only what he had told me, but also myself, who even then was trying to find an excuse for him. I realized that for the longest time I myself had been living in the story Vance was writing for me.

A week later the bank confirmed that my account was protected. The forged loans were canceled. Horizon Vital’s account was closed, and the remaining money was legally seized.

The apartment remained with me.

Vance’s car, his share in the company, and other property were temporarily seized. The investigation separately concerned my mother, while charges against Rebecca began because of the use of financial documents. I did not rejoice at the punishment of any of them.

I simply stopped trying to save them from the consequences of their actions for the first time.

Vance’s office in the apartment became empty. Squares of dust remained on the shelves, and on the wall hung a photo frame in which the four of us had once stood in a summer garden. I removed the photo, but the frame remained on the wall for several days.

What hurt me most was the corridor bench.

The large bag I had taken to the hospital and brought back was still lying there. Inside I found the silver music box. Its little moon no longer turned because I had not wound the mechanism all the way.

I closed it.

Three months later I rented a small apartment in another city. A river could be seen from the window there, and in the morning the smell of the neighboring bakery came in. At my new job I began checking financial documents. I read contracts slowly, checked signatures twice, and was no longer afraid of the word: no.

Daniel called me once a week. He remained in the child’s life, but now with the truth. Rebecca was receiving treatment and awaiting the court’s decision. Vance lived separately, under supervision.

One evening Daniel brought his little daughter to my new apartment. The girl held a colorful sheet of paper in her hand.

“I drew this for you,” she told me.

On the paper was a small house with a large window. Three people stood by the door, and a yellow moon hung above.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“You, me, and Dad,” the child answered. “Mom will be there too if she stops fighting.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

I took the child’s hand.

“Sometimes people separate when being together causes everyone pain. But that does not mean you will be left alone.”

“Will you stay too?”

“As long as you want me to come.”

The first snow came at the beginning of December. In the morning I opened the window and saw white silence on the street. Coffee was being prepared in the kitchen, the child’s drawing lay on the table, and a bag for my new job waited by the door.

That day I received a letter from Vance.

It was short.

He wrote that everything had been a mistake, that Rebecca no longer meant anything to him, that he still considered the years spent together real, and that he wanted one meeting.

At the end it said: I can still be a good husband for you.

I looked at this sentence for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“I do not want you to return. I want you to stay away from me and deal with the consequences that you created yourself.”

I pressed the send button.

I wrote nothing else.

In the evening I placed the music box on the windowsill. I repaired the mechanism. The small silver moon turned slowly, and a clear, peaceful melody sounded in the room.

That day I realized that this object was no longer for the baby.

It was for me.

Because sometimes the most precious gift is not what you give to someone else.

Sometimes it is the life you finally return to yourself.

The moon was still turning.

And this time I was no longer trembling.

Missed the beginning?
