Part 4 — At the airport, he announced that he was leaving abroad, but after my calm response, the phone fell from his hand

“The whole case may be turned upside down,” Lucas said.

I stood up immediately.

“What does he have left?”

“We do not know yet. But Nika is already going to your house.”

The phone rang again. This time it was the bank manager.

“Mrs. Vance, your account is protected, but an attempt to log in from an unknown device was recorded.”

“Is it Brandon?”

“Most likely. Also, a notification came to your email. It says that you yourself canceled the restriction on the accounts.”

I laughed, but the laughter immediately caught in my throat.

“He is trying to erase the trail.”

“We are already handing everything over to the investigators,” the bank manager told me.

Lucas took a phone from his bag.

“A police group is on the way to your house. You will not enter there alone.”

However, Brandon arrived before me.

It was five in the evening when Nika called me. He was standing at the corner of the street, where my parents’ house, enclosed by a low brick fence, appeared silent in the winter cold.

“The door is open,” he told me. “The light is on inside.”

“Has the police arrived?”

“Not yet. They will be here in a few minutes.”

“Is Brandon inside?”

“The car is standing in the yard.”

I got into the car. Lucas sat beside me.

When we arrived at the house, Brandon was standing in the living room. He was no longer wearing his coat, the collar of his shirt was open, and his hair was disheveled. For the first time I saw not a calm traveler, but a man whose own plan was slipping from his hands.

“Why did you come here?” I asked.

“I had to talk to you.”

“Weren’t you in a hurry to get on the plane?”

“Clarissa ruined everything.”

“No, Brandon. Both of you ruined it.”

He picked up the small wooden box lying on the table. My father had made this box with his own hands, and old keys were kept inside it. There were three small indentations on the lid of the box, resembling raindrops.

“What I need is here,” he said.

!!!  Part 4 — In the evening, my housekeeper was hiding leftovers, but I followed her trail and the color drained from Lorenzo’s face

“What?”

“The original contract. The land-sale documents. If I say in court that you hid money from me and deceived me about our joint property, you will also have problems.”

“Do you still think I am afraid?”

He leaned toward me.

“I was building your life.”

“You were living in my life.”

There was a knock at the door.

The police officers entered. Brandon immediately changed his voice.

“This is a family misunderstanding,” he said. “My wife has a nervous breakdown.”

Nika turned on the audio recording. Brandon’s own voice rang through the room: “Whom will they believe? An abandoned husband or a woman who lies to everyone?”

Brandon froze.

The voice continued again.

“Before she finds out, we will be in London.”

He sat down on a chair. He covered his face with his hands. For the first time he heard his own words from another person’s mouth, and for the first time he realized that his greatest enemy was not my evidence, but his own voice.

“This has been cut,” he said quietly.

“The recording has been saved in full,” Nika replied. “The time, date, and camera data are attached.”

“Clarissa planned everything.”

“We have her recording too,” Lucas said.

At that moment the second police officer put handcuffs on him.

Brandon looked toward me.

“Abigail, please. Say one word and we will stop this.”

I did not feel victory.

Only exhaustion.

“I had been stopping everything for a very long time,” I told him. “Now I will not do it anymore.”

Clarissa was arrested at the hotel the next morning. In her room they found the silver folder, several versions of the forged power of attorney, and a table of transfers from my accounts. The examination confirmed that my signature had been forged. The bank canceled all operations, while the preliminary sale agreement was declared invalid.

Brandon’s lawyer withdrew from the case two days later.

“You tried to hide the truth from me,” he told him at the meeting. “Now you will have to defend yourself.”

Brandon angrily struck the table with his hand.

“I need money!”

“That is exactly the problem,” the lawyer replied. “The money you were trying to take was never yours.”

Several weeks later, at the preparatory court hearing, the complete recording of the testimony was heard. Brandon sat with his head lowered at first. When he heard his own voice again, his jaw tightened. Clarissa was crying beside him, but Brandon no longer looked at her.

The judge rejected their property claims, the investigation into forgery and fraud continued, and the restriction placed on my house was removed.

But the greatest loss was neither the money nor the house.

One evening I returned home alone. Brandon’s clothes were no longer in the wardrobe. The place of his toothbrush looked empty. Beside the bed there remained only one photograph in which we were both smiling, while I still believed that a smile always meant the truth.

And in the kitchen there was the small wooden box.

The three indentations resembling raindrops were still visible on the lid. I opened the box and found inside the keys, an old letter from my parents, and the real documents of the land sale. Brandon could not find them because the bottom part of the box was double. My father had done this when I was twelve years old and told me: “Not every door opens with a key. Some doors require patience.”

That night I did not cry for the first time.

Three months later I reopened the store. I painted the walls warm cream, placed a small work desk behind the cash register, and checked the merchandise orders myself. I changed the accounting company. I no longer encountered Clarissa’s name on any document.

In the evenings my niece, Eliza, came to the store. She was eight years old and drew everything: flowers, houses, people whose hands were very long.

One day she handed me a sheet of paper.

“This is your new house,” she told me.

“Why are there no doors here?”

“Because whoever wants to enter must knock on you first.”

A small house was drawn on the sheet. Yellow light came from the windows. Beside it there were three marks resembling drops.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Vater verbot mir die Uniform bei Melanies Hochzeit, doch als ich durch die Türen trat, verlor er plötzlich jedes Wort

The first snow came at the end of December. The city quietly turned white. In the morning I opened the store door, made tea, and arranged the list of new orders. I no longer checked where Brandon was and whom he was speaking with. I no longer waited for the sound of the phone.

But in January a message still arrived.

“Abigail, I have lost everything. Clarissa left me. I no longer have a lawyer. Only you can help me. Come, let us start again.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“You want to start again from the place where you destroyed me. But I am starting from where I got myself back. Do not return.”

I deleted the message and put the phone in the drawer.

In the evening Eliza stayed with me. When closing the store, she saw the small wooden box and asked why I kept it beside the cash register.

“Because this box reminds me how I survived,” I told her.

“What is inside?”

“Keys.”

“For which door?”

I looked toward the house. Outside, snow was carefully falling on the street.

“The door that leads to oneself.”

That night I placed the box on the windowsill. The three small indentations looked like raindrops in the moonlight.

The house was mine.

And my life too.

Missed the beginning?
