At the airport, he announced that he was leaving abroad, but after my calm response, the phone fell from his hand

In the airport waiting hall, my husband told me that he was leaving for two years, while I already knew whom he was flying with. Brandon stood directly in front of me with such a calm face, as if he were going away only for the weekend and not forever from our marriage. He was wearing a dark blue coat, holding the handle of a new suitcase in his right hand, while in his left hand he had his phone, placed screen-down.

“Don’t cry, Abigail. I’m doing this for our future,” he told me.

I lowered my eyes and wiped the tear from my cheek. I played exactly the wife he expected.

“Will you call often?”

“Of course. It’s just that work will burden me very much in the first days.”

There was no warmth in his voice, but he played feigned concern well. For three months he had been repeating the same thing: as if a Canadian company had hired him as a supervisor of projects in Vancouver, as if the salary would be enormous, and as if this sacrifice would save our future.

But I already knew that there was neither a Canadian company, nor an apartment in Vancouver, nor an employment contract.

There was another woman.

Clarissa Bennett was thirty-three years old and worked at an accounting company that served my store, “Abigail’s Haven.” She knew our revenues, the suppliers’ accounts, part of the passwords, and also on which days money went into the bank.

Three nights earlier, Brandon had left the computer open. He was taking a shower, and I wanted to walk past him when a message appeared on the screen.

“Darling, show Abigail a sad face. The more she believes that leaving is difficult for you, the later she will check the accounts.”

My hands froze.

The next messages appeared one after another.

“London confirmed.”

“The hotel has been paid for three nights.”

“As soon as you land, try to transfer the remaining money.”

And finally: “She is too naive. She will cry at the airport and then wait for you for months.”

I did not shout. I did not awaken fear in him. I simply took the phone in my hand and photographed each message. That night I slept in a separate room for the first time, although Brandon thought I was tired of his lies.

During the next three days I was no longer a wife. I became a woman who had to protect her own life. I downloaded bank statements, photographed invoices, contacted a lawyer, and hired a private investigator. I learned that our marriage contract stated separation of property. The house inherited from my parents and the money received from the sale of land near Tucson belonged only to me.

At home, meanwhile, I told Brandon to pack enough shirts and take medicine for the flight.

“Do you really want me to leave?” he asked me in the kitchen at seven in the morning.

“I want you to be happy,” I replied.

This was the first lie that I could barely persuade even myself of.

Now we were standing at the airport. His phone lit up. He quickly turned it over, but I saw at least one letter: “K.”

Brandon kissed me on the forehead.

“I love you.”

“I love you too,” I told him.

This was the last lie I told him.

!!!  Part 4 — My husband hit me six times and threw me out of the house, but when my father appeared, his face suddenly turned pale

He disappeared through the security gates. I stood motionless for several minutes, then wiped my face and took out my phone. A message from the investigator had already arrived: Clarissa was flying on the same flight, and he also had photographs.

I looked at the clock. It was nine thirty-eight. I had to be at the bank at eleven, and at the lawyer’s at one.

I got into a taxi. Then a message came from Brandon: “I already miss you. Stay strong.”

I really smiled.

But I still did not know that his betrayal was not only a plan to take the money. In the bank’s closed office, lawyer Lucas pushed a thin folder toward me and brought his fingers to its edge…

Lucas’s fingers touched the edge of the folder, but he had not opened it yet. The air in the bank office was heavy; the wall clock clicked clearly every second, as if it had begun counting down against me.

“Before you see this, you need to know one thing,” he told me. “We can suspend access to your accounts, but if Brandon already has a signed power of attorney, the situation is much more complicated.”

“I gave him nothing.”

“Not personally. But someone tried to use your signature.”

I felt cold in my stomach. A small memory card lay in the folder, placed in a transparent plastic case. Beside it was a letter from the bank’s security department.

“We received this in the morning,” Lucas continued. “Last night someone sent a request for an electronic transfer in your name. The amount is six hundred thousand dollars.”

“From where?”

“From your store’s reserve account. Fortunately, the bank’s program requested additional confirmation.”

I went to the window. Outside, taxis were moving, people were buying coffee, and someone was straightening a child’s hat. The world did not notice the collapse of my marriage at all.

“Brandon knew that the money existed,” I said.

“Brandon knew. But he was not the only one who could do this.”

Lucas brought in a security employee. The woman was holding a paper cup, and there was a red stain on her fingers, as if ink had been spilled.

“Mrs. Vance, the request was sent from your warehouse,” she told me. “The camera shows that someone entered there yesterday evening.”

“Who?”

She looked at Lucas.

“We have not fully deciphered the recording yet. But it looks like a woman.”

Only three people had keys to my store’s warehouse: me, Brandon, and Clarissa.

At one o’clock we moved to the lawyer’s office. The old wooden clock hanging on the wall struck twice when Lucas turned on the recording. My store’s back door appeared on the screen. It was eleven o’clock at night. A woman entered through the door, wearing a black hat and holding a silver folder in her hand.

“We cannot see her face,” I said.

“But we can see the shoes,” investigator Nika, who was standing in the corner, replied. “I recognized this model from Clarissa’s photographs.”

“And Brandon?” I asked.

Nika opened a second file. A shot from London airport appeared. Brandon and Clarissa were not speaking to each other, but they were walking through the same passage. Clarissa was still holding the same silver folder.

At that moment the phone rang. Brandon was calling me.

!!!  Ich verweigerte meiner Schwiegermutter weitere 5.000 Dollar, dann schlug sie mit dem Zeremonienstab zu und mein Mann wurde plötzlich kreidebleich

I did not answer the first time.

Nor the second time.

At the third call Lucas looked at me.

“Answer it. Put it on speaker.”

I accepted the call.

“Abigail, why aren’t you answering?” I heard fear in his voice for the first time. “I arrived at the hotel and the card did not work. The bank told me that all the accounts had been suspended.”

“It is probably a mistake,” I said calmly.

“Don’t lie to me! What did you do?”

Lucas tapped the table twice with his finger. Nika began recording.

“Me? Nothing. I simply took care of my own money.”

Silence fell on the other side.

“I can’t reach Clarissa either,” he said quietly.

Something finally collapsed in my heart. He had not even tried to defend her.

“Brandon, why were you flying beside her?”

“You are understanding everything incorrectly.”

“Then explain it to me.”

Instead of answering, he told me that the lawyers would destroy me and that I would lose everything when I returned home. And finally he said a word that changed Lucas’s face:

“You do not know whom you are standing against. This house no longer belongs to you…”

The call ended. For several seconds only the sound of the wooden clock could be heard in the room. Lucas opened the folder and handed me the sheet placed inside it. My signature was on it, but I had never written it. Nika looked at the sheet and then slowly said: “This is not only a forged power of attorney. There is a clause here according to which the sale of the house has already begun…”

“The sale of the house has already begun,” Nika repeated and put the sheet on the table.

For a long time I could not speak. The address of my house was written on the paper, and below it were my full name and signature. The signature looked very much like the real one, but the last letter rose slightly upward. My father had always told me that this small movement would protect me from a forgery.

“This signature is not mine,” I said.

“We know,” Lucas replied. “That is why we requested handwriting expertise.”

He opened a second envelope. Inside were the expert’s conclusion, the bank call recording, and a video that Nika had not yet shown us.

“What can be seen in the video?” I asked.

Nika turned on the screen.

The recording was from the small conference room in my store. The camera stood on a shelf and showed only half the room. Clarissa was sitting on a chair. Brandon stood in front of her, holding a silver folder in his hand.

“If she signs today, everything will be finished,” Clarissa said.

“She will not sign,” Brandon replied. “She trusts me.”

“You said you had already made her sign over the house.”

“I prepared the preliminary form. Her electronic signature will do the rest.”

Clarissa chuckled.

“And if she finds out?”

Brandon struck the folder against the table.

“Before she finds out, we will be in London. Then we will say that she had problems, managed money incorrectly, and that her nerves failed her. Whom will they believe? An abandoned husband or a woman who lives alone and lies to everyone that everything is fine?”

!!!  Meine Schwester befahl mir, meine Nichte sofort zurückzubringen, doch als ich ihre Nachricht las, hörte sie plötzlich auf zu lächeln

My fingers clenched under the table. I wanted to turn off the screen, but I could not.

Clarissa asked quietly:

“And if she blocks the accounts?”

“Then we have a second way. The money from that land. She does not know that I kept the old bank key.”

Lucas stopped the recording.

Such silence fell in the room that I could hear my own heartbeat.

“Now everything is clear,” he said. “They tried not only to take your money, but also to sell your house. This is an organized attempt at fraud.”

“Brandon knew that the house had come to me from my parents.”

“That is exactly why he chose it. Your marriage contract says that property is separate. For him, the house was the only large asset he could seize.”

Lucas called the police department. Nika transferred all the photographs and recordings to a separate disk. And I received another call from Brandon.

“What are you going to do?” he asked me.

“I am waiting for you to tell me the truth.”

“Do you already know everything?”

There was tiredness in his voice, but not regret.

“Enough.”

“Clarissa forced me. She was in debt. I simply wanted a way out.”

“Was selling my house the way out?”

“You owned everything alone anyway. You should have shared it with me at least once.”

“You did not want sharing from me, you wanted to steal from me.”

His breathing changed on the other side.

“If you go to the police, you will ruin us both.”

“You have already ruined both of you. I simply survived.”

I ended the call.

At that very moment Lucas’s phone rang. He listened, his face changed, and he turned toward me.

“Brandon did not stay in London. He bought a return ticket and is going straight to your house.”

“Why?”

Lucas looked out the window.

“Because he knows that there is still something of his left in the house. And if he finds it before you do, the whole case may be turned upside down…”
