Part 4 — For three days I drove past a hungry foal, but when I stopped, the veterinarian suddenly went pale

The man who got out of the black car stopped at the clinic door. In his hands he held Klara’s wooden box, the small box that my sister always hid under her desk.

I recognized its scratched corner immediately.

The first letters of Klara’s name had been carved on it with a knife.

“Who are you?” the police officer asked and reached toward his belt.

The man raised both hands.

“My name is Lasha. I worked with Klara. For three years I was afraid to bring this box.”

Armaz took a step backward.

“This man is nobody.”

“That is precisely why you never found me,” Lasha replied.

The lawyer quietly said something to Armaz. Armaz shook his head.

“Let us leave immediately.”

“You are going nowhere,” the police officer said.

Lasha handed the box to Mariana. Inside were an old notebook, several photographs, a memory card, and a folded document. We immediately inserted the memory card into the clinic’s small computer.

Klara’s room appeared on the screen.

The recording had been made at two o’clock at night. Klara sat in front of the camera. Her face was tired, and in her hand she held precisely the copper whistle that I carried in my pocket.

I could not move.

“Daniel, I know you will be angry because I hid all this from you. But Armaz does not sell only horses. He steals animals from shelters, creates false documents, and then sells them expensively. Lea became a witness to this. I left the chip in her body because I knew that one day I would need to return her.”

In the video Klara opened the notebook.

“If I do not manage in time, find Lea. She will have a foal. Her belly is already showing. Do not let them sell the baby separately.”

Klara’s voice broke off. She looked beyond the camera.

A heavy blow sounded on the door.

“He is here.”

Then Armaz appeared in the video. He was younger, but he had the same cold gaze.

“The horse belongs to me,” he said in the recording.

“She is a living being,” Klara replied.

“My signature is on the document.”

“The document is false.”

Armaz struck the table with his hand.

“If you tell anyone this, your shelter will be closed. And you will lose everything.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Todos os dias ele me chamava de preguiçosa no restaurante, até que uma porta entreaberta fez seu sorriso desaparecer

Klara leaned close to the camera.

“Daniel, if you are watching this, know that I did not hide it from you because of you. I simply wanted to spare you one more loss.”

The video stopped.

No one spoke in the room.

I realized that for years I had mourned Klara’s death, but her last request was something entirely different: not to let the life she had protected disappear into someone else’s hands again.

Armaz stood by the wall. The police officer played the recording again from the beginning.

“Is that your voice?” he asked him.

Armaz shook his head.

“It is edited.”

The second police officer took the memory card.

“The audio, video, documents, and chip data will go for examination.”

“You have no idea who you are fighting,” Armaz said.

Mariana answered calmly:

“No. Now we know exactly whom we can no longer help.”

The police took Armaz away that same night, but the case did not end there. The next day it turned out that nine animals were in the stalls on his farm, animals whose families had thought for years that they had died. Klara’s notebook contained all their names.

The first thing Armaz did from prison was call his lawyer.

“Tell Daniel that I will pay him,” he said. “As much as he demands.”

After a silence, the lawyer answered:

“This offer will harm you more in court than it will help you.”

“You are my lawyer!”

“I was.”

She ended the call.

Several days later we heard another recording. The police had recovered it from an old camera installed in Lea’s stall. In the recording Armaz was telling his employee:

“Let her get to the point where she can no longer stand. Then the foal can be sold separately for more.”

When I heard these words, my stomach clenched. For the first time I understood how heavy it is to hear your own voice when it says evil things.

Armaz heard it too.

At the preliminary court hearing the judge played the recording. Armaz looked at the screen, and his face slowly changed color.

!!!  My husband assigned me to serve in London, but after my calm answer Jessica’s smile slowly disappeared

“I did not say that,” he whispered.

The prosecutor calmly replied:

“You said it. That is precisely why the recording is important.”

Armaz lowered his head.

At the same time, Klara’s old shelter was empty. Rain came through the roof, and photographs of her horses hung on the walls. In one photograph Lea stood—young, strong, with freedom in her eyes. Beneath the photograph, in Klara’s handwriting, it said: “I cannot return everyone, but I will forget no one.”

I took the photograph down from the wall.

I left only one thing in the room: my canvas jacket, which I had thrown over the foal that first day. I no longer needed the jacket. It had a small hole inside, and the mud had settled into the fabric so deeply that it could not come out.

But I could not throw it away.

Lea remained at the clinic for six weeks. Every morning I checked her wounds, and in the evening the foal lay beside her. The foal soon grew stronger. He learned to stand on his feet, and then examined my pocket with a curious nose.

I named him Niko.

“Why Niko?” Mariana asked me.

“It was the name of Klara’s childhood friend. She always said that even on the worst day Niko managed to make someone laugh.”

Mariana smiled.

“Then you chose him a good name.”

The court found Armaz guilty of animal cruelty, theft, and the use of false documents. His farm was confiscated, and the families of the sold animals were given the right to have them returned. I did not go there when the decision was announced.

That day I was walking Lea in the yard.

My life slowly changed. I moved from the city to the village and rebuilt Klara’s shelter from the beginning. In the morning I filled the water tanks, at noon I repaired the damaged fences, and in the evening I watched Niko’s new tracks in the mud.

The first snow came at the end of November.

Niko was already running quickly. Lea followed calmly behind him; she was no longer the thin, trembling, exhausted horse. The rope scar remained on her neck, but now that scar no longer looked like a sentence.

!!!  Am doborât un asasin în restaurant, iar când am ridicat cheia din haina lui, șeful mafiei a încetat să mai zâmbească

One Sunday Klara’s niece, little Elene, came to me. She held a drawing in her hands. Three figures were drawn on the paper: a large horse, a small foal, and a man with a copper whistle showing from his pocket.

“Is this you?” I asked.

“Yes. You saved them.”

I shook my head.

“They saved me too.”

Elene did not understand what I meant, but I pressed the drawing to my chest.

Several months later I received a final letter from Armaz. The lawyer sent it to me.

“Daniel, I can explain everything. I have no money left, but if the testimony changes, my case may be made easier. Lea and the foal are with you, so you should be interested too.”

I read the letter to the end.

Then I wrote a reply.

“Lea and Niko are with me because they should be free. I will no longer make your consequences easier.”

I wrote nothing more.

That evening I stood at the shelter gate. Snow was falling slowly. Lea stood by the fence, while Niko pressed his nose against her shoulder. I took the small copper whistle from my pocket.

Klara’s thing was still cold, but this time the cold no longer hurt me.

I brought the whistle to my lips and blew it once.

Lea raised her head.

Niko ran toward me.

And for the first time, after years, silence no longer resembled abandonment.

Missed the beginning?
