My Billionaire Boss Bet a Thousand Dollars That No One Would Dance with Me — But His Smile Disappeared When I Entered the Ballroom

That evening I was standing by the door of Adrian Cole’s office when he said my name with a laugh and bet a thousand dollars that no one would dance with me.

For five years I lived as if I were furniture. Loose cardigans, my hair tightly tied at the nape, thick glasses, and the habit of checking the corners first whenever I entered a room. People thought I was shy. The truth was heavier: five years earlier, someone had followed me every day in the parking lot, until one morning the police recorded my testimony and I could no longer even trust the sound of my own footsteps.

Invisibility became my armor.

And beneath that armor I was the strongest employee in Cole’s company. I knew Adrian’s allergies before his doctor did. I rewrote his harsh letters so they no longer sounded like threats. I hid eleven-hour workdays in the calendar because I knew he would not even notice who was preventing his empire from collapsing every day.

That day, at seven in the evening, only three men remained in the New York office. Rain descended on the windows in thin, shining lines. The smell of orange and cedar came to my desk—Adrian’s cologne, which always preceded trouble.

“Are you coming with a partner to Friday’s charity evening?” Marcus Bell asked, reclining in the armchair.

“I would rather chew glass,” Adrian replied.

Julian Reyes laughed in the doorway.

“Then take your assistant. Grace, right?”

My fingers stopped on the keyboard.

“Grace?” Adrian repeated.

For one second I truly thought he would defend me.

“God, no.”

The words collapsed silently in my heart.

“But she is very smart,” Julian said, as if offering a belated apology.

“She is the best assistant I have ever had,” Adrian replied calmly. Then he added: “But look at her. Those glasses, those clothes… I’ll bet a thousand dollars no one will dance with her on Friday.”

Something caught in Marcus’s throat.

Adrian did not care.

The elevator doors hid their laughter. Only then did I realize that I had been holding my breath. Twenty minutes later Priya Naidu came to me. She was holding hot tea, but the cardboard sleeve around the cup was already crumpled.

“Did you hear everything?” she asked.

“Every word.”

“Grace, you should not tolerate this.”

“I have been arranging his life for three years.”

“And he counts your appearance?”

I looked at myself in the black monitor turned into a mirror. At the eyes hidden behind thick glasses. At the pale face. At the small silver clasp attached to the cardigan sleeve, which my mother had left me and which I touched with my thumb when I was nervous.

At that moment, for the first time, I did not want to hide.

“Do you still have the invitation to Friday?” I asked Priya.

Her eyes widened.

“Are you going there?”

“Yes.”

“Grace, are you sure?”

“No,” I said, and smiled at my reflection in the monitor. “But he is sure that he knows my worth.”

On Friday evening Manhattan glittered with winter lights. A thousand little candles flickered in the ballroom of the Ashford Hotel. I put on a dark blue, body-hugging dress, let my hair down, and left my glasses at home. I still fastened the silver clasp near my chest.

When I stopped at the top of the stairs, conversation ceased throughout the ballroom all at once. Julian almost dropped his glass. Marcus’s mouth fell open.

Adrian Cole looked at me.

His face had never changed during billion-dollar deals. But now he lost all color at once.

I ran down the stairs. I stopped in front of him. He barely swallowed.

“Well, Adrian,” I said calmly, “do you still think no one will dance with me?…”

“Looks like you lost the easiest thousand dollars,” Marcus said quietly.

Whispers spread through the ballroom. Adrian first looked at him, then at me. In three years I had never once seen him run out of words, but now his mouth remained slightly open.

“May we dance?” he finally asked.

“Is this an apology?”

“No. It is a request.”

I looked at his outstretched hand. The cold metal of an expensive watch gleamed on his fingers.

“Only one dance.”

The orchestra began slow music. Adrian carefully put his hand around my waist, as if he were seeing for the first time that I was a person and not a function left at a desk.

“I did not know you were hiding,” he said to me.

“You knew that you needed me this way.”

“Grace…”

“Tell me one true thing about me.”

His hand tightened.

“You are the most loyal person I know.”

“This is not about me. It is about you.”

The music ended. I stepped back and went to the other side of the ballroom. For the first time all evening people were looking at me, but their gaze hurt less than Adrian’s gaze. They were only noticing me now. He had had three years.

At eleven at night I went out onto the balcony. The smell of snow stood in the air, while the city lights below looked like spilled gold. The silver clasp lightly rubbed against the fabric of the dress.

Adrian followed me a few minutes later.

“May I talk to you?”

“You are already talking to me.”

“What I said was cruel.”

“Only cruel?”

He put his hand on the railing. His fingers tensed.

“I made you smaller because it was easier than admitting that you had become important to me.”

This time I almost believed him.

The balcony door opened and Isabel Marsh came out in red silk. On her lips was a smile that had already been prepared before she entered the room.

“What an intimate scene,” she said.

Adrian’s face darkened.

“Isabel, not now.”

“On the contrary, now is the best time.”

She handed me a folded sheet. The Cole company’s letterhead was on it. My name was written there. Position: Director of Executive Operations. Twice the salary. Approval from two board members.

There was no signature.

Below, a note written in Adrian’s hand was visible: Stop the promotion. Keeping her in this position is more important.

The paper grew cold in my hand.

“Two years?” I asked.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“Grace, it is not what it looks like.”

“You wrote it.”

“I tried to protect you.”

Isabel chuckled quietly.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mio marito chiese il divorzio subito dopo la mia eredità, ma alla prima lettura del documento sua madre smise di sorridere

“How noble. Or perhaps he was afraid that you would leave and take the secret with you?”

My phone rang in my bag. It was an unknown number. Only one message was visible on the screen: Ask him what happened after your testimony.

My breath caught.

Adrian saw the message and all color left his face.

“Grace,” his voice suddenly changed, “which testimony?”

“You tell me.”

Isabel’s smile disappeared.

“Apparently some pasts can still return,” she said.

“What do you mean?” I turned to Adrian.

He could not answer me. This time the silence resembled the silence of the guilty.

The phone lit up again. A second message came: Tomorrow at nine in the morning, the old archive building on River Street. Come alone. If you want to know who signed that night.

“Who is writing to you?” Adrian asked me.

“I don’t know.”

“Do not go there.”

“Now I will go exactly there.”

He grabbed me by the wrist.

“This is dangerous.”

“Did you know that five years ago too?”

His fingers immediately loosened.

At nine in the morning, the iron door of the old archive building was supposed to open before me. But at night, when I returned home, I found a thin envelope under the door. My name was written on it and below, one sentence: If you open this, you will no longer be able to protect Adrian…

I put the envelope on the kitchen table and stared at it for almost ten minutes. Outside it was six in the morning. Rain ran down the window, while the refrigerator motor roared as if someone in the house were having difficulty breathing.

Adrian called me.

“Grace, do not open it,” he said without a greeting.

“How do you know that I received the envelope?”

Silence.

“Adrian.”

“Because I sent this letter.”

I opened the envelope. Inside were a small memory card and an old newspaper clipping. The headline concerned a warehouse fire from five years earlier. Three people had died. The official cause was faulty electrical wiring.

But below, my name was written as the main witness.

“You told me that my testimony was lost,” I said.

“I told you that you would not have to return to this case.”

“Because they were threatening me?”

“Because they were threatening me with you.”

That evening I went to Adrian’s penthouse. The entire city could be seen from the living-room windows, but there was cold in the room. A small wooden box lay on the table.

“This recording was made that night,” Adrian said. “In my father’s office.”

“Why did you not give it to me then?”

“Because my voice can be heard in the recording.”

“You were there too?”

He lowered his head.

He put the memory card into the computer. After several seconds, a man’s voice sounded in the room.

“If the girl goes to the police, the same thing will happen to her brother as to those workers.”

It was the voice of Richard Cole, Adrian’s deceased father.

Then young Adrian’s voice sounded.

“Grace is already with the police. You will no longer be able to stop her.”

“Then her testimony will disappear.”

!!!  Six days after giving birth, my husband took my child from me to court, but even the lawyer stopped breathing when he saw my uniform

“No.”

“Are you opposing me?”

“I will protect her.”

A heavy удар sounded in the recording, and Adrian’s breathing quickened.

Then a third voice appeared. Isabel’s.

“If she goes to court, she will take us all down. Find a way to invalidate the testimony.”

The recording ended.

For a long time no one could speak. Adrian’s eyes were lowered, and my hands had gone cold. It was precisely these voices that brought me back five years: the smell of earth, the crackling of burning wood, the red light of the police car.

“You knew,” I said. “You knew they were threatening me and still hid everything from me.”

“I hid it from you so that you would stay alive.”

“And why did you stop my promotion?”

“Because your new position meant that your past would become visible to the board. Isabel controlled the board members at that time. I could not protect you if everyone began asking questions about you.”

“You could have told me the truth.”

“I was afraid that the truth would make you lose everything again.”

The door opened. Isabel entered with two security employees.

“Very sentimental,” she said. “But one recording will change nothing. The original is with me.”

Adrian moved toward her.

“Step back.”

Isabel smiled.

“The original concerns not only the fire. It shows who gave the order that night and why you helped him.”

My phone rang again. This time the message was from the police: Because of new evidence, both of you are to appear at the federal investigative agency tomorrow at ten in the morning.

Adrian looked at the screen.

And Isabel used my real fear for the first time.

“Grace, if you go there, you will learn that Adrian was not only a protector…”

Then she took a second document from her bag and put it on the table. Adrian looked at it and his face turned gray. His signature was visible at the end of the document…
