Part 4 — Before the Judge, Mother Declared My Life a Lie, but When She Took Hold of the Door Handle, Her Smile Disappeared

Someone has already entered there…”

Those words were still hanging in the air when the phone rang again.

This time the caller was Caleb’s lawyer.

“We need to speak immediately,” he said.

“You have nothing left to say to me.”

“Your brother is ready for an agreement.”

“Now?”

“Before the case proceeds in a criminal direction.”

Caleb looked to the side. He clearly wanted somehow to regain control.

“Mara,” he told me, “we are one family.”

“Family does not try to put a person in prison because it dislikes their father’s will.”

“You do not understand how much harm will come to everyone.”

“You have already caused the harm.”

His lawyer immediately joined in.

“If you refuse the agreement, my client will deny all the accusations.”

“Refuse it,” I answered. “But this time his words will no longer stand alone.”

Archil turned off the phone.

We went to the hospital. A sharp smell of antiseptic stood in the corridor, while the wall lamps made everyone’s faces pale. Daniel Hayes lay on a bed, with a bandage on his shoulder and a small scratch on his forehead.

He saw me and smiled weakly.

“You are still as calm as you were that night.”

“And you are still late.”

“Let’s blame the car.”

His joke helped us for a moment, but then he looked at the device lying on the table.

“Father knew this would happen,” Daniel said.

“What really happened?”

“Your brother was not the only one involved in Caleb’s financial scheme. Part of the money went to your mother’s accounts. In return, Victoria signed statements that you had never served.”

I lowered my eyes. It was as if I already knew, but hearing it still wounded me.

“Why didn’t Father tell me?”

“Because he was afraid they would attack you directly. He left the files with us and made us promise to open them only when your life was used in court.”

Archil connected the device to the computer. My father’s room appeared on the screen. Alexander was sitting beside the bed, holding the same copper coin from which he had made the last ring of my bracelet.

His voice could be heard faintly.

“If you are watching this, Mara, it means that they used your name to cover their own crime. Do not try to save them. I spent my whole life trying, and in the end I realized that some people do not want to be saved.”

Mother entered the video.

“You can still convince her to sign,” she told Caleb’s voice, which could be heard off camera. “She cannot open the military records. The court will consider her deceived.”

Caleb’s voice was calm.

“If she goes to prison, the company will remain with me.”

For the first time Caleb heard his own voice from someone else. He stared at the screen as if an unfamiliar man were speaking there.

“This is not the complete conversation,” he whispered.

“But it is certainly your voice,” Archil said.

Mother closed her eyes.

The next day their bank accounts were frozen. On the third day investigators entered the company’s headquarters. Caleb’s lawyer refused to defend him when the audit showed that the lawyer’s fee had also been paid from one of the empty company’s accounts.

There was only one thing in Caleb’s room when the investigator handed me the office keys: a photograph of Father, left on the desk, turned face toward the wall.

I set the photograph upright.

Then I closed the door.

The case returned to court. Mother confessed her guilt. Caleb asked for an agreement, but the agreement no longer meant forgetting. They were ordered to return the money taken illegally, were stripped of the right to manage the company, and the court fully cleared my name.

!!!  Part 4 — My sister did not invite me to the royal wedding, but when I came to her door dressed in uniform, her smile disappeared

I felt no joy at their punishment.

Only exhaustion.

Months passed.

I closed one branch of the company and kept the rest for the employees. I created a foundation in Father’s name for military families. In the mornings I walked to work, because I rented a new apartment in the part of the city from which the river could be seen through the window.

Daniel called me every Thursday.

“Still sugarless coffee today?” he asked me.

“Still.”

“Are you ever going to start making your life sweet?”

“I already have. I just have not changed the coffee.”

Letters came from Mother. In some there were apologies, and in others there were reasons. As if a reason and regret were the same thing.

One evening Caleb himself wrote to me.

“Let’s meet just once. I will explain everything to you. We are still family.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote back:

“Everything has already been explained. I do not want a meeting anymore. I wish you peace, but I will no longer allow you to return to my life.”

No answer came.

That same night I watched Father’s video once more. Then I opened the drawer and took out the copper bracelet. Its last ring, made from the burned coin, was warm in my palm.

The first snow was falling outside the window.

I fastened the bracelet around my wrist and turned off the light.

This time the silence no longer resembled danger.

Missed the beginning?
