Part 4 — My four-year-old son called me crying, but when I got home, the fear I saw on Derek’s face froze me

The file was indeed found in Lena’s car.

The police took it that same morning from the trunk of the car left in the rear parking lot of the bus station.

There were several bank statements, a preliminary apartment-sale agreement, and forged copies of my signature.

Lena did not only want to take the child.

She wanted to take everything from me.

The apartment. The savings. Noah.

Travis needed money. Lena planned to run away with him after obtaining a restraining order against me and driving me out of the house.

My lawyer, Mira, looked through the documents for a long time.

“She thought you would get lost in panic,” she told me.

“She almost succeeded.”

“No. You called the police, Derek arrived in time, and you kept the recording. These three things change everything.”

Lena’s lawyer called me that same day.

“My client is ready to enter negotiations,” he said.

“What negotiations?”

“A temporary agreement on the child’s custody.”

“Does she want to see the child?”

“She wants you to drop the charges.”

“No.”

“Think about it. Court will be difficult for both of you.”

“My son was beaten with a bat. She planned it. The recording exists. I will drop nothing.”

The lawyer sighed.

“Then I can no longer help you in this case. The client demanded that you transfer money from you, and I consider that illegal.”

The call ended.

That was the first moment when Lena tried to regain control, and the first time someone refused her.

Two days later, the investigator told me that Lena had been found in a motel on the outskirts of the city. She had only one bag in the room, and a photograph of my family lay on the table.

I did not go there.

It was not necessary.

At the preliminary court hearing, Travis was made to listen to the recording. He sat behind a glass wall and initially smiled ironically.

Then he heard his own voice.

“If he doesn’t say it, frighten him.”

His smile disappeared.

“It wasn’t like that,” he said.

The prosecutor stopped the recording.

“Is that your voice?”

Travis lowered his head.

“I… was angry.”

“And you struck the child with a bat?”

He could not answer.

For several seconds, only the creaking of a chair leg was heard in the room.

Then for the first time he saw his own words through someone else’s ears. Not as a joke. Not as anger. As a threat that had hung over a four-year-old child’s head.

Travis pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison.

Lena pleaded not guilty in court, but the recording, the bank documents, and her nighttime call proved everything. She was sentenced for conspiracy against the child and preparing false testimony. Noah ultimately remained with me, while Lena was given only the right to supervised visits.

When I left the courthouse, Derek was waiting for me on the stairs.

“Is it over?” he asked.

“The court is over. The rest is just beginning.”

When I returned home, I opened Noah’s room door.

The bed was empty because he had slept with me that night. On the windowsill lay his small yellow star—the sticker that had been stuck to the bat’s handle.

I picked it up.

The plastic was sticky and dusty. It was such a small thing that it almost disappeared between my fingers, but that day the whole house fit inside it.

Noah called to me from the bed.

“Dad, did Derek leave?”

“He will leave in a little while.”

“Will he come tomorrow too?”

“If you call him, he will come.”

Noah thought.

“Will you come too when I call you?”

I sat beside him.

“Wherever I am, I will come.”

He held my finger.

“Then I won’t be afraid anymore.”

Several weeks later, we moved into a small apartment on the other side of the city. I sold the old house because every corner there preserved the sounds of that day. From the kitchen window of the new apartment, a bridge could be seen. Trains passed in the morning, and Noah counted them.

I moved to part-time work. In the evenings I cooked pasta, washed little socks, and taught Noah how to fold a blanket so that the corners matched each other.

Derek came every Wednesday.

They drew together. Derek drew bridges, and Noah added enormous yellow stars to them.

The first snow came at the end of December.

Noah stood by the window and drew small circles on the glass with his palm.

“Dad, does snow cover houses?”

“Only for a little while.”

“Do they appear again afterward?”

“Always.”

That evening I received a letter from Lena.

“I want to explain to you. I did not want this to happen. Noah is my child too. Please give me permission for one meeting.”

I read the letter several times.

Then I folded it and put it in a folder.

The next day she called again.

“Only five minutes,” she said.

“No.”

“He needs his mother.”

“He needs safety.”

“I was wrong.”

“I know.”

“Then why won’t you give me a chance?”

I stood by the window. Snow was falling silently in the street.

“Because I already gave you a chance. You turned it into the child’s fear.”

“Will you ever forgive me?”

I was silent for a long time.

“I may be able to forgive someday. But not return to you.”

I ended the call.

That night Noah came into my room, holding a small box.

“Where should we put this?”

Inside the box lay his old toy dinosaur and the yellow star that had been stuck to the handle of the baseball bat.

“Here,” I said, making a place for it on the windowsill.

The number was small, but it lit up the whole room.

Noah stood beside me. Outside, snow was still falling, and a train was slowly crossing the bridge.

“Dad?”

“I’m listening.”

“Can we leave the door open now?”

I took his hand in mine.

“We can.”

And that night, for the first time, the door was no longer the boundary of fear.
