Part 4 — The Family Built My Cousin’s Career on My Failure, but My Mother Went Pale When She Turned Over One Sheet at Dinner

“What does it mean, the house will be seized?” my father asked when Mark’s voice disappeared from the speaker.

No one in the room remembered the food anymore. Chilled meat lay on the table, while half-poured drinks trembled in the crystal glasses.

“Where did the loan taken in Ryan’s name go?” I asked.

Ryan raised his head.

“I invested it in the company.”

“Which company?”

He looked at Diana.

Diana lowered her eyes.

“We had a small consulting business,” she said.

Mark immediately explained:

“The business was not actually operating. The money went to the same intermediary who prepared the false certificates. Father’s house was used as collateral because Ryan did not have sufficient income.”

Father stood up, but his knees gave way and he sat down again.

“I signed because I was told everything had already been approved.”

“Who told you?” I asked.

He looked at Diana.

An answer was no longer necessary.

Mark ended the call on the condition that I would provide all the necessary documents in the morning. Then he called his lawyer. At that same moment Diana dialed her own lawyer’s number.

“I need you to come now,” she told him. “Josh has ruined everything.”

Her voice was so clear that they heard it at the other end of the table too.

The lawyer answered briefly:

“Mrs. Haley, I no longer represent you.”

Diana fell silent.

“What does it mean, you no longer represent me?”

“It means I have a conflict of interest. The company no longer finances my services, and my name has also appeared in the investigation.”

The call ended.

Diana became smaller for the first time. Not with age, but without the power with which she had forced everyone to obey her words for years.

Ryan buried his head in his hands.

“I didn’t know, Mother.”

“Did you know that the certificates were incorrect?” Claire asked.

“I knew Mother was arranging something. I thought she was simply speeding up the formalities.”

“And still you told everyone that you had beaten a hundred candidates?”

Ryan could not answer.

I played the video again on the screen. Diana’s voice sounded through the room. There, at the same table where a short time earlier she had declared herself a winner in front of everyone, she heard her own words.

!!!  Part 4 — They turned my parents into guests in their own home, but when my brother learned I had returned, the color drained from his face

“Everything always worked out for Josh. At least once he had to lose.”

Diana’s face tightened.

“I did not mean it that way.”

“But that is what you said,” I told her.

“If his results disappear, Ryan will have a chance.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“That is your voice, Mother.”

Diana stared at him.

“I did it for you.”

“No,” Ryan said. “You did it not for me, but to humiliate Josh.”

This was the first time Ryan stood on my side. But I felt no relief. Only exhaustion.

That same night I handed the documents to the company’s board. Ryan’s hiring was canceled. An official investigation against him began, while the folder Diana had taken from the office and the video were handed over to the appropriate authorities.

I told Father that my lawyers would help him draw up a repayment plan for the loan.

“Why are you helping us?” he asked me.

“Because you did not involve yourself in this lie with your house.”

“But we involved you.”

“I know.”

That was everything I could say that night.

Three days later the family gathered again, but this time not in a restaurant. In my old office, where pictures of my first company hung on the wooden walls, investigators were waiting for Diana.

She opened the door and placed a dark umbrella beside the table. It was the same umbrella she had held in the video.

“Josh, please,” she said. “We are family.”

“I was family then too, when you took my folder.”

“I did not want to destroy you.”

“But you were ready to build your own son’s victory on my defeat.”

She lowered her eyes.

“You can change your statement.”

“No.”

“Your father will lose the house.”

“My lawyers will help him. But I will no longer hide your actions.”

After that the investigators took Diana away for questioning. Ryan remained at home. Later I learned that he gave a statement of his own free will. I do not know whether it was remorse or fear, but for the first time his choice belonged to him.

A week later Father called me.

!!!  I Returned Home Unexpectedly on New Year’s Eve and Found My Wife with a Fever and My Baby in the Cold — My Mother Lost Color

“We saved the house,” he told me. “We agreed on a new repayment plan.”

“That is good.”

“Your mother is asking to speak with you.”

“Not yet.”

“Forever?”

I was standing by the window. Rain was falling in the street and making little rivers on the glass.

“I don’t know, Father. This time it will take time to answer.”

Months passed.

Ryan’s case ended with an agreement: he admitted the crime, returned part of the money, and chose community service. Diana was also ordered to compensate the damage and was prohibited from activity connected with companies for several years. I did not go to court. My testimony was written.

I did not want to see her downfall.

I wanted her, at least once, to see for herself where her own choice had led her.

In autumn I moved to another city. I rented a small apartment near the sea, started work early in the morning, and walked along the shore in the evening. My new team consisted of twelve people. No one in the office knew that once I had delivered food at night and coded above a laundromat.

This time it did not matter to me.

I placed an old wooden table in my office. At the same table where I had received the ninety-nine-dollar message from my first client, I now approved employees’ paychecks.

On the first snow, my niece, little Emma, visited me. She sat down on the floor and drew me a picture with colored pencils: a house, the sea, and a big yellow sun.

“This is your new house,” she told me.

“Where am I?”

“Here,” she said, drawing a little man beside the sea. “You are not sad anymore.”

I was putting the picture on the refrigerator when my phone received a message.

It was Diana.

“I know that you are better now. I want us to meet once. Only for ten minutes. I will explain everything.”

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“I have already heard the explanation. In your own voice.”

The reply came immediately.

“You are still my family.”

I put the phone on the table.

“Family is the person with whom you do not need to hide yourself. And with you I was always doing that. I am not going to meet.”

!!!  Encontré a mi recién nacido dentro del inodoro y, cuando señalé a la mujer junto a él, mi marido se quedó paralizado

This time she did not call again.

In the evening I took out the old memory card with the copper frame. The little object that had hidden my fear for a long time and finally brought out the truth, I now stored in an empty wooden box.

The city lights reflected in the window. Emma was drawing on the floor. The smell of hot bread came from the kitchen. For the first time in years, silence in the house no longer meant that someone was planning something against me.

Grandfather called me the next day.

“I am proud of you, boy.”

“Why are you telling me now?”

“Because earlier I realized it far too late.”

“The important thing is that you realized it.”

“Will you forgive Diana?”

I went to the window and looked at Emma’s picture stuck to the refrigerator.

“Maybe someday I will forgive her. But I will not go back.”

Outside, the first snow was falling. On the windowsill stood a small wooden box, and inside it was the memory card set in a copper ring.

Once it had been evidence for me.

Now it was simply a memory of the person who constantly needed to prove to others that he existed.

I was proving nothing to anyone anymore.

I left the memory card in the box and turned off the light.

For the first time, the silence was mine.

Missed the beginning?
