Part 4 — My husband chose his lover in the hospital, but months later the man standing beside me changed her face

After Daniel’s words, it seemed in the hospital corridor that every step was coming toward me.

Ethan immediately took out his phone.

“I’ll call security.”

“You will call no one,” Daniel said.

“You can’t forbid me.”

“No. But now, for the first time, you must stop saving yourself at someone else’s expense.”

Ethan’s hands were trembling. Vanessa was sitting on the bed, tears in her eyes, looking at the same phone that had destroyed her lies.

“Did you send this message?” I asked Ethan.

“No.”

“But you know who it is from.”

He could not answer.

Daniel put the memory card in his pocket.

“We are going to the police.”

“This is a family matter,” Ethan said.

“No, Mr. Whitmore. Forged signatures, financial fraud, and threats are no longer a family matter.”

Ethan heard his own voice through someone else’s mouth for the first time. His face became gray.

“Claire, please, don’t do this.”

“I have done nothing.”

“We can resolve this.”

“You had nine years to resolve it.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Claire, I didn’t know that he was hiding documents against you.”

“But you knew he was married.”

“I knew.”

Her honesty turned out to be more painful than another lie.

“Then both of you must carry your own decisions.”

Two police officers appeared in the corridor. They did not put handcuffs on Ethan. Not yet. Daniel had to file a report, obtain the hospital camera recordings, and officially document the threatening message.

Ethan still tried to regain control.

He called his father.

“Father, did you do all this?”

The answer could be heard loudly through the phone. Richard’s voice was calm.

“I only protected the one you sold.”

Ethan pressed the phone to his ear.

“You knew about Vanessa’s baby?”

“I knew.”

“And about Claire’s pregnancy?”

“The doctor called me after you ignored her message.”

I lowered my eyes.

Then I understood that Richard had known everything, but had not called me. He had left the choice to me.

!!!  Ich wurde vor der ganzen Fischhandlung erniedrigt, doch als ich mich umdrehte, hörte Rogério plötzlich auf zu lächeln

It was the first kindness I had received from that family.

Three days later Ethan and Vanessa stood before the company board. Old photographs of the Whitmores hung on the walls of the room. In every photograph they smiled as if there had never been fear in the family.

Daniel turned on the video.

Ethan’s own voice sounded through the room.

“I’ll get her to sign it without her understanding.”

Ethan sank into the chair.

His lawyer quietly told him:

“You will say nothing else.”

“But this is taken out of context.”

“No, Ethan. This is your voice.”

He fell silent.

For the first time he heard his own words with the same clarity with which I had heard them. There was no anger on his face anymore. Only that empty expression a person gets when there is no place left to hide behind a lie.

A week later I took my things out of the house.

Our bedroom was almost empty. In the closet stood only one wooden box. Inside was my old copper compass—the one I placed on the table at the beginning of every project in the first years of my studio. There was a small scratch on the compass’s lid, which had appeared when Ethan told me that there would never be time for me to return to my own studio.

I picked up the compass.

Beside it our wedding photograph had remained.

In the photograph I was smiling.

Ethan had his hand on my shoulder.

I did not take the photograph.

I took the compass.

Two months later Richard returned home from the hospital. After the stroke he could barely move his left hand, but his mind was still clear.

His house on the North Shore had white wooden floors, and the lake could be seen from the windows. I was preparing the first project of my new studio there.

Richard held out his hand to me.

“You must build everything with your own hand, Claire.”

“This time not under someone else’s name.”

!!!  Mi esposo entregó la habitación de mi hijo a una desconocida y al tocar mi carpeta sellada dejó de sonreír

“This time under your own name.”

My child was still in my womb then. Every evening I was learning how to trust my own body, which for years I had listened to only when it could no longer remain silent.

The doctor told me that the anemia was treatable. The pregnancy was also progressing steadily.

One evening, when I hung the first drawing on the wall of my new office, Richard opened the door.

“Ethan sent you a letter.”

The envelope was neither gray nor old. It was white, clean paper, with only my name written on it.

I opened it.

“I know it is late. But if you will speak to me at least because of the baby, we will start everything over.”

Richard stood silently.

“Do you want an answer?” he asked me.

“No. He has already received the answer.”

I folded the letter and put it in the desk drawer. I did not tear it up. I no longer needed to destroy it in order to be free.

A second letter came a week later.

Then a third.

Ethan’s lawyer offered me money, a house, and a share of the company if I withdrew my claims. I refused.

Later the court confirmed my copyrights. False financial reports were uncovered. Ethan was removed from management of the company, while an investigation was also begun against Vanessa because of the threat. Vanessa gave testimony and admitted the crime. I was happy about none of the decisions.

Simply, for the first time I was no longer obliged to save anyone.

Six months later my child was born.

It was a boy.

I named him Luka, because since childhood I had remembered this name as a small point of light in the darkest room.

I opened my new studio on the second floor of a small building by the river. In the mornings I opened the windows, brewed coffee, and stuck Luka’s drawings on the wall.

He drew only trees and houses so far.

Every house had a large door.

One morning, when the first snow fell, Luka took my finger and led me to the window.

“Mother, is this our house?”

Outside, the small public garden I had designed could be seen. In the white snow the paths stood out clearly.

“No,” I told him. “This is the city.”

“Then where is our house?”

I looked at his small hand.

“Where we choose each other.”

That evening Ethan called me. The number glowed on the screen for a long time.

Luka was sleeping in my lap. His breathing was calm.

I ended the call.

A few minutes later a message came.

“Just answer me at least once. Please.”

I went to the window. Snow was falling more heavily in the street. My old copper compass lay on the table—with the same small scratch on its lid that had resembled my past for years.

I picked it up and placed it in my palm.

It was still pointing in the right direction.

I turned off the phone.

Luka’s fingers closed around mine in his sleep.

And for the first time I was no longer waiting for anyone.

The compass silently showed the way.

And the way was mine.

Missed the beginning?
