Part 4 — My Husband Threw Me Out of the House Because His Mistress Wanted to Give Birth to an Heir, but His Mother’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

The door lock opened completely and Ryan’s mother burst into the room. Her face was pale, her hair stuck together from the rain, and she held a small metal box in her hand.

Two police officers stood behind her.

“Madeline,” she exhaled, “you can still save everything.”

I did not get up from the chair.

“You already saved everything. Just not me.”

Daniel stood in front of the door.

“Mrs. Haley, the police know about the recordings.”

“You do not know what you are doing,” she whispered. “Ryan will lose everything.”

“He lost that a long time ago,” I told her.

One of the police officers took out a phone. At that same moment Daniel’s phone rang. He answered and listened silently for several seconds.

“The lawyer is on the way,” he said.

“My lawyer?” Ryan’s mother asked.

“No. Ours.”

The metal box fell from the woman’s hand. It fell to the floor and the lid opened. A small recorder lay inside.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the device I had found in our bedroom several years earlier and Ryan had told me was an old, broken thing. It turned out that it had been working all this time.

The police officer picked up the recorder.

“We must listen to this too.”

“No!” the woman screamed.

But it was already too late.

Ryan’s voice sounded in the room. Close, clear, calm.

“We must convince Madeline to the end that the problem is in her. If she loses the child once more, she will sign everything herself.”

Then his mother’s voice came.

“And if she remains pregnant?”

Ryan laughed.

“She won’t. Elena knows what she is doing. And when she leaves the house, Lea will convince everyone that it is my child.”

I listened in silence. The most painful thing was his laughter. Not the words. The laughter.

Ryan’s mother hid her face in her hands.

“I did not want it to go this far,” she said.

“But every time you opened the door for it,” I replied.

At that moment a commotion broke out outside. Ryan was shouting in the corridor. The police officers opened the door and he rushed inside. His eyes were reddened with blood, and the collar of his shirt was open.

“Madeline, come with me. Daniel is lying to you.”

“I heard the recording.”

He stopped.

“It is edited.”

Daniel took the final document from the folder.

“Like your signature on the clinic papers? The examination has already confirmed that it is forged.”

Ryan moved toward me.

“You are my wife!”

“I am not anymore.”

“You are carrying my child!”

For the first time I looked directly into his eyes.

“Your child learned what kind of man you were before you did.”

His face changed. It was as if this simple sentence had brought down all the walls.

The police officers seized him.

“Ryan Haley, you are under arrest for fraud, document forgery, and attempted deliberate poisoning.”

“Madeline, tell them this is a mistake!”

I said nothing.

His lawyer came an hour later, but as soon as he heard the recordings, he closed his bag.

“I can no longer represent your interests,” he told Ryan. “In this case I can no longer try to hide the truth.”

Ryan heard his own words from someone else’s mouth for the first time. He lowered his head and seemed unable even himself to believe that he had said all this.

Then I went toward our old house.

I found the bedroom empty. The wardrobe was open. On the floor beside the bed lay one photograph—our wedding day, when I still believed that love could withstand every misfortune.

Beside the photograph lay the silver pen with the black horse. Ryan’s mother had left it on the table.

I picked it up.

Then I understood for the first time that the pen was no longer a symbol of our beginning. It was only an object. Nothing had power if I no longer gave it any.

Three weeks later, the court returned my family’s property to me. The company left by my mother was restored in my name by the lawyers. The clinic was closed, Dr. Elena fully cooperated with the investigation, and Ryan’s mother confessed to the crime.

I did not demand that anyone be punished beyond what the law provided.

I simply no longer tried to save them.

Five months later I moved to a small seaside town. Daniel helped me manage the company, and instead of the old house I chose a bright apartment where I could see the harbor from the window in the morning.

Two things lay on my desk: the doctor’s first ultrasound image and a small wooden toy that I bought for the baby.

After six months, a girl was born to us.

I named her Elia.

When I took her into my arms for the first time, she was so small that her fingers could barely wrap around one of mine. She opened her eyes, and I became strangely calm.

Daniel stood at the door.

“What do you want now?” he asked me.

I looked at the baby.

“Only that no one in this house should be afraid anymore.”

Weeks later, Elia was already laughing. In the morning she pulled at the curtains, at noon she scattered colored pencils on the floor. I continued working, held meetings, and in the evenings folded her little socks.

My life did not change with noise.

It changed through small habits.

Every morning I drank coffee by the window. Every night I locked the door twice and then no longer checked who was standing on the other side.

Ryan sent me the first letter from prison.

“Forgive me. I was not going to lose you.”

In the second letter he wrote that Lea had deceived him too and that he truly did not have a child.

In the third there was only one sentence: “I want to see my child.”

I did not tear up a single letter. I gave them all to the lawyer.

One evening, while Elia sat on my lap and drew with a pencil, the phone rang. An unknown number was on the screen.

!!!  Mi exmarido me humilló embarazada en plena Quinta Avenida, pero al ver quién bajaba del vehículo dejó de sonreír

“Madeline,” Ryan said when I answered. “Please give me only five minutes.”

Outside the window, the first snow was beginning.

“No, Ryan.”

“I have changed.”

“Maybe.”

“You still do not trust me?”

I looked at Elia’s drawing. On the sheet she had drawn a house, and in front of the house three figures. One of them held a large yellow sun.

“Trust is no longer what you must save between us,” I told him. “I have already saved what was important.”

“Our family?”

“My child. Myself. My peace.”

I ended the call.

I put the phone on the table and turned to Elia.

“Mom, look,” she told me. “This is our house.”

“I know, my little one.”

In the corner of the table lay the silver pen. The black horse still shone, but beside it Elia was drawing a small door with a red pencil.

I took the pen, put it in the drawer, and closed the door.

Then I opened the window.

The first snow entered the room.

And this time, when a new life lay in my arms, I had left no one behind.

Missed the beginning?
