On Christmas Eve, I Put My Daughter to Sleep in the Restaurant, but After One Whisper from Her, James Dropped the Documents from His Hands

My six-year-old daughter was sleeping in the corner booth of the restaurant when the door opened and James Whitmore suddenly came inside. It was Christmas Eve, and the time was past eleven.

I covered Chloe with my thick coat. Only her small nose could be seen, and her hair was pressed against her cheek. I was wiping the floor and listening to her breathing every few seconds. That sound was the only thing that evening that did not frighten me.

James first looked at her, then at me.

“Mr. Whitmore, forgive me,” I said immediately and wiped my hands on my apron. “The babysitter did not come at the last minute. I promise, I will not disturb you. I am almost finished.”

I could read nothing in his gaze. With my thumb I touched the silver keychain lying on the table. This little item had been given to Chloe by her father, Daniel, for her birthday, and since then I had always carried it with me.

“The child will not bother me,” James told me calmly.

“You may not come tomorrow if this is a problem.”

“I told you, continue.”

I lowered my head and continued cleaning. But now every movement seemed heavy to me. I thought James was only waiting for the right moment to tell me: do not come tomorrow anymore.

He did not leave.

He stood at the counter and turned several documents in his hands. From time to time he looked around the empty restaurant hall, as if he were looking for something. Outside, snow struck the windows, while inside the noise of the heater could be heard.

“Is everything really all right?” he asked at last.

“Yes.”

“You said that answer very quickly.”

“Because everything really is all right.”

I told the lie in such a way that I could not recognize even my own voice.

I was three weeks behind on the rent. There was half a loaf of bread and two apples in the refrigerator. That morning I told Chloe that we could no longer prepare dinner at home because I was preparing a Christmas surprise. Sometimes children need a beautiful lie more than the truth.

Chloe stirred.

I went to her immediately.

“Quiet, sweetheart. Go back to sleep.”

She opened her eyes and looked around in confusion.

“Mom, are we here?”

“For a little while, until I finish work.”

Chloe sat up. My coat slid onto the floor, and the silver keychain lightly struck the floor.

“Can we stay here for Christmas?” she asked.

Something caught in my throat.

“No, sweetheart. We will go home.”

“But it is warm here.”

“It is warm at home too.”

Chloe lowered her head.

“No, Mom. We have no food at home.”

The hall fell silent in one second. It was as if even the heater had stopped working.

I lowered my eyes and wiped away a tear with the back of my hand.

“Chloe, you should not have said that.”

“Did I do something wrong?”

“No. You did nothing wrong.”

But James was no longer looking at the documents. They fell from his hands and scattered across the floor. His face changed, as if the child’s simple words had revealed something much heavier.

“Mom, is that man angry?” Chloe asked quietly.

James heard her.

“No,” he said. “I am not angry.”

“Then why does your face hurt?” Chloe asked him.

James could not answer.

He went toward the kitchen. Behind the door, the sound of pots was heard, the refrigerator opened, and the cupboards creaked.

“What are you doing?” I called.

“Dinner.”

“It is not necessary.”

“I know.”

Several minutes later he came out holding two plates. But his gaze was not on the food. James was still looking at the silver keychain that I had picked up from the floor.

“Where did you get this?” he asked, and for the first time I heard fear in his voice…

I did not give James the keychain.

“My daughter’s father gave it to her,” I said.

“Daniel?”

The spoon fell from my hand.

“You knew Daniel?”

Instead of answering, James looked at Chloe. The child already held hot soup and was carefully cooling it.

“Daniel Whitmore,” he said. “He was my younger brother.”

That heavy silence fell over the hall again.

“Daniel died seven years ago,” I said.

“I know.”

“You knew that he had a child?”

James pressed his lips together.

“No. I only knew that he was seeing some woman. My mother said that woman was looking for money.”

“Did you believe her too?”

“Back then I believed everyone who spoke loudly in my family.”

Chloe raised her head.

“Was he my uncle?”

James lowered his eyes.

“Probably.”

At that moment his phone rang. The name of the restaurant manager, Richard Hale, appeared on the screen.

James did not answer.

When it rang a second time, he put the phone on the table.

!!!  I-am ordonat șefului mafiei să nu-și lase sora să moară, iar când am atins tava scăpată, zâmbetul lui a dispărut

“Come to my office tomorrow morning, Grace.”

“Why?”

“Because I found your name in more documents than it ever should have been in.”

“I will not understand anything.”

“I do not understand yet either. But Richard is trying very hard to make sure we do not understand.”

He took a dark folder from the counter.

“There is something here that you must see. However, I do not want to open it alone.”

Car headlights lit up outside. James looked toward the window, and his face tensed.

“You will leave here through the back door today,” he said. “And do not tell anyone that these documents exist…”

At James’s last words, I took hold of the back-door handle, but heavy footsteps sounded outside. Chloe immediately hid behind me.

“Who is it?” I whispered.

James put a finger to his lips. Then he pressed the folder to his chest and disappeared beside the door.

The door moved.

“James, I know you are inside,” Richard Hale’s voice was heard. “You must fire this woman right now.”

James did not open the door.

“Richard, we will talk in the morning.”

“In the morning it will already be too late. She no longer has a job, and you will not need these old documents either.”

My knees gave way. James looked at me, and for the first time I realized that at that moment not only my job, but something much larger, was in danger.

Richard’s footsteps gradually faded.

James locked the door.

“Now I must tell you what I found,” he said.

“What documents are they?”

He put the folder on the table. It had a corner soaked with a coffee stain, as if someone had hurried to hide it.

“Seven years ago Daniel sold thirty-five percent of the restaurant. He did not take the money. He transferred his share to you.”

“To me? That is impossible.”

“Your name is written in the document. Grace Miller.”

I sat down on a chair. My hands grew cold.

“I received nothing from Daniel.”

“I know. The transfer was never completed because Richard presented an altered signature at the bank. Then he hid the documents.”

“Why?”

James took out a second sheet.

“Because Daniel’s letter says: if anything happened to him, his share was to be given to you and your child.”

Chloe stood silently and turned the silver keychain with her fingers.

“Did he know my father?” she asked.

“He did,” I said, although my voice was trembling.

James turned the sheet over. At the bottom I recognized Daniel’s handwriting. He always gave the small letter an excessively long line.

“Do not believe them if they tell you that I abandoned Grace. I did not manage to return. Chloe is my daughter and she needs protection.”

My breath caught.

“This letter was written two days before Daniel’s death,” James said. “And there is one more thing.”

He opened a sealed envelope and took out a laboratory result from inside.

“The DNA analysis confirms that Chloe is the biological daughter of Daniel Whitmore.”

Chloe understood nothing, but I understood everything. The lie hidden for years had become one sentence.

James lowered his head.

“Forgive me. I left my brother alone when you needed him most.”

“You did not know.”

“But now I know.”

At that moment the phone placed in the folder lit up. A message came from an unknown number.

“If these documents reach the police in the morning, you will never get Chloe back.”

James read the message and lost color in his face.

Then a second message came.

“The child is already with me…”
