I Went Alone to the Wedding, but One Sentence from an Unknown Woman Suddenly Silenced the Hall and Made Her Hand Tremble

That night I entered the wedding of rich people alone, while by midnight an unknown woman had called me her fiancé for everyone to hear.

At first I was thinking only about free drinks. For the first time in two years, I left my seven-year-old son, Kevin, with a babysitter and allowed myself not to think about bills, damaged cabinets, and how much pasta we had left in the kitchen for at least three hours.

The rented suit was tight around my throat. The edges of the tie were worn, and the right shoe clicked at every step, as if announcing to everyone that I had ended up in this hall by accident. My friend Dave was marrying the heiress to a real-estate empire. People here discussed choosing between summer houses and winter houses. I, meanwhile, was counting the babysitter’s hours on my phone.

At nine fifteen in the evening, I hid at the back of the hall, behind an ice swan. That was exactly where I saw her.

She was wearing a dark emerald dress. Her shoes lay on the marble floor, and she held a martini glass as if she were keeping her last strength in it. There was tiredness beneath her eyes, the kind that money cannot make disappear.

My shoe slid noisily across the floor. The woman turned her head and looked me over.

“If you have a startup offer, I’ll cut you with an olive stick,” she told me.

“I don’t have a startup. I make cabinets.”

Her eyebrow rose slightly.

“Cabinets?”

“Mostly kitchen ones. I don’t need an investor, only good wood and patience.”

I looked at the ice swan.

“Is this place free, or are you waiting for the bird to melt?”

For the first time she almost smiled.

“Sit down.”

“Ronald,” I said, holding out my hand.

She considered my calloused hand for a long time, then shook it.

“Scarlett.”

We sat silently for several minutes. It was not an awkward silence. Both of us simultaneously decided that we no longer wanted to participate in the theater gathered in the hall.

“Why are you here?” she asked me.

“Dave is an old friend of mine. I was supposed to eat dry chicken and pretend that I belonged here.”

“Don’t you have a girlfriend?”

“I have a seven-year-old boy. Tonight he is my only companion. He loves dinosaurs and considers pasta a complete meal.”

!!!  Part 4 — My daughter-in-law rented my mother’s lake house for a party, but after my calm response my husband stopped speaking

Real warmth appeared on her face for the first time.

“His mother?”

“He was two when she left. She has not appeared since.”

Scarlett put down her glass. Her fingers were trembling slightly.

“You are more tired than you look,” I told her.

“And you are more observant than your suit promises us.”

At that moment a man dressed in a gray suit came out of the hall.

“Scarlett! I have been looking for you everywhere!”

Scarlett stiffened. She did not look at the man; she turned directly to me.

“Ronald, how attached are you to Gary’s suit?”

“I have to return it by noon tomorrow, or they will charge me an additional fee.”

She picked up her shoes and stood up.

“Then come with me. Now.”

“Where?”

Scarlett grabbed my wrist. Her fingers were cold as ice.

“Do you know where the service elevator is?”

And before I could answer, the gray-suited man reached us and extended his hand to Scarlett…

Scarlett gripped me even more tightly.

“Smile,” she said quietly.

“Why?”

“Because you are my fiancé now.”

The man stopped in front of us.

“Mrs. Vale, who is this?”

“My fiancé, Ronald,” Scarlett said, resting her head on my shoulder.

The color drained from the man’s face.

“This is a joke.”

“No, Leon. The joke was when you told me that my father’s signature was still valid.”

I understood nothing, but I followed Scarlett. We passed silver carts in a narrow corridor. The smell of burnt butter came from the kitchen. At the elevator she suddenly stopped me.

“If you leave now, I won’t blame you.”

“My son is waiting for a babysitter, and I am pretending to be the fiancé of a strange woman.”

“I know. That is why I am asking you—no, begging you. Help me for one night.”

“Who are you protecting me from?”

Scarlett did not answer me. She only pulled a small copper key from the inner seam of her dress.

“There is an object in my father’s office that we must find tonight. If we do not find it, tomorrow I will lose everything.”

The elevator doors opened.

As we entered, she put a folded paper into the pocket of my suit.

“Do not open it until you are alone.”

“Scarlett, what does it say?”

For the first time she looked at me frightened.

“It says that my wedding is not the only lie in this hall…”

The sound of heavy steps came from above…

The steps coming from above stopped the elevator door. Leon stood in the corridor with two guards.

“Mrs. Vale, please return to the hall,” he said.

Scarlett took a position in front of me.

“Take your hand off me, Leon.”

“I cannot. Your father left strict instructions.”

“My father has been dead for six months.”

Leon smiled, but the smile did not reach his eyes.

“That is why these instructions are important.”

The paper in my pocket burned against my skin. Scarlett gave me the copper key and led me toward an old storage room beside the kitchen. There, among sacks of flour and copper pots, we found a narrow door hidden in the wall.

“My father told me that if Leon ever began choosing among my fiancés, I should open this door,” she said.

“Among your fiancés?”

“Leon chose all of them for me. Every one of them was connected to my father’s company. You are the first person who entered this room by accident.”

The key turned in the lock. Inside stood a small steel box. Dust lay on its lid as if no one had touched it for years.

Scarlett opened the box. Inside were a memory card and one sheet written in her father’s hand.

“Read it,” she told me.

The sheet said: “Scarlett, if you are reading this, know that Leon did not leave my death as an accident. He forged my signature, transferred the company’s debts into your name, and hid money in an account opened in Kevin’s name.”

Scarlett’s breath caught.

“Who is Kevin?” I asked.

“My nephew. A child lost in childhood, whose existence no one was supposed to know about.”

At that moment the phone lit up. A message arrived from an unknown number: “If you contact the police, the boy you call Kevin will not be there in the morning.”

My body went cold in one second.

“They know about my son,” I said.

Scarlett placed the memory card in my hand.

“Now we will find out why.”

There was a recording on the card. Leon’s face appeared on the screen. He was standing in exactly the same hall where we had been drinking a few minutes earlier.

!!!  Az anyám bejelentette, hogy hozzám költözik, pedig nem hívtam, és amikor ezt kimondtam, unokatestvérem arcáról eltűnt a mosoly

“If I make Scarlett sign, the company is mine,” he said in the recording. “But if she resists, we will take the child’s father away from her and she will have no choice to make.”

A second voice sounded in the recording. It was my friend Dave.

“Kidnapping the child is excessive.”

Leon replied:

“No, Dave. This is only insurance.”

Scarlett’s face turned pale.

“Dave knew?”

The recording continued. Leon said that the wedding was not Dave’s, but an evening for signing Scarlett’s financial contract. Dave had turned out to be only bait.

I turned off the recording.

“We are going to the police,” I said.

Scarlett nodded, but at that moment my phone rang. The babysitter’s number was on the screen.

“Ronald,” a woman’s voice was crying, “Kevin is no longer at home. I found only his little wooden dinosaur by the door.”

Scarlett looked at the phone. Then suddenly the sound of a lock came from behind the wall.

Someone was coming in from the other side…
