At 1:17 at night, the hospital’s call woke me and told me that the billionaire, whose wife I officially still was, was fighting for his life. Still half-asleep, I clutched the phone as if I could still hear his voice. It had been eleven months since I left Ethan Cole’s house with one suitcase.
“Mrs. Bennett, are you his legal wife?” the woman asked me.
“No… I mean, yes. But I thought our marriage was over.”
“The divorce was not formalized. Please come immediately.”
The rain was pouring heavily. I reached St. Vincent’s Hospital in twelve minutes, but three black cars stood by the entrance as if they were waiting not for a city, but for a war. The security guard Marco met me at the car door. His face said more than the doctor’s call had.
“How serious is it?” I asked.
“More serious than what they told you over the phone, ma’am.”
Water dripped onto the floor from his wet coat. And I was still clutching the thing I had accidentally taken when I left Ethan’s house—a small brass key, with a dark-red triangle scratched on its head. He always wore it when he opened the door to his secret archive.
Doctor Hana Sato received me together with two lawyers.
“A concussion, broken ribs, internal bleeding,” she said. “The car was deliberately forced off the road. We also found traces of a sedative in his blood that we had not given him.”
One of the lawyers placed a certificate on the table. My name and Ethan’s were written side by side.
“A divorce petition was never filed,” he told me. “Therefore, by law, you are the first person who can make decisions.”
The words stuck in my throat. Ethan had told me that his lawyers would take care of everything. I believed him. That was precisely my most expensive mistake.
At that moment the door opened and Vanessa Hart entered. She was wearing a cream cashmere coat, and a silver dress gleamed beneath it. A storm was raging outside, but there was not a single drop on her.
“So, this is Claire Bennett,” she said. “I imagined her taller.”
I did not rise from the armchair.
“And I thought Ethan’s fiancée would be beside his bed, not conducting an introduction before strangers.”
Her smile tightened. She slowly took off her gloves and placed a medical power of attorney on the table.
“Ethan signed this yesterday. I make the decisions.”
Behind her stood Lucas Wayne, Ethan’s assistant, who had spent the last eleven months convincing me that Ethan was going to call me. He opened a folder and took out printed letters.
“They are from your email,” he said. “You yourself wrote that this marriage was a mistake and asked Ethan to erase you.”
Each sentence sounded like my voice. I had written none of them.
“The account was hacked. I told you that.”
“There is no record of such a conversation,” Lucas answered calmly.
Vanessa slid photographs across. In one, her hand rested on Ethan’s chest, and in the second she leaned toward his ear. She watched my face and waited for jealousy to destroy me.
“When is the wedding?” I asked.
Fear slipped into her eyes for the first time.
“We were planning to announce it next week.”
Just then an alarm sounded from Ethan’s room. His blood pressure was falling. Doctor Sato rushed into the room, and I followed her and told her that Ethan had an unusual reaction to that sedative. The infusion was reduced, and after several minutes the monitor’s sound stabilized.
Ethan lay pale. His right hand was injured, while his left touched mine. He slowly squeezed my fingers.
When I returned outside, the doctor asked me again:
“Why are you certain that this signature is forged?”
I took the folder. The brass key with the red triangle dug into my palm. I looked at Vanessa, and I was about to say one physical truth that neither she nor Lucas had thought of hearing…
I placed my finger on top of the folder, and everyone in the room fell silent.
“Ethan can never sign with his right hand,” I said.
Vanessa chuckled.
“Are you going to invent this too?”
“I am not inventing it. His left wrist was injured in childhood. He learned to write with his right hand, but he always made his signature with his left. And this document was executed with the right hand.”
Lucas’s face did not change; only his thumb pressed against the edge of the folder.
“A forensic expert will determine that,” he said.
“That is exactly why I came.”
The lawyer opened a second folder, but Vanessa grabbed his hand.
“This is a family matter.”
“No,” Doctor Sato intervened. “It concerns the patient’s life.”
A squeal sounded again from Ethan’s room. This time nobody opened the door. A small black light came on in the corridor, which I had not noticed before.
Marco came to me and said quietly:
“Mrs. Bennett, these cameras do not normally turn on.”
“Who turned it on?”
Instead of answering, he looked at the screen attached to the wall. An image of Ethan’s office appeared on it. The footage had been recorded one day earlier.
Then Ethan appeared on the screen, but he was not alone.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“Turn this off,” she said.
Lucas took out his phone. At that very moment, an unknown man looked toward the camera on the screen and placed a small sealed envelope on the table. Ethan’s voice sounded:
“If Claire comes here, give the envelope only to her…”
The footage stopped, but the words remained in the corridor for a long time. Vanessa stared at the screen as if she could not believe her own eyes.
“This is an illegal recording,” she said.
“Then why did you get frightened?” I asked.
Lucas dialed a number on his phone.
“We need the security system shut down immediately.”
“It is already too late,” Marco told him. “The recording is stored on a separate server.”
Seven minutes later, a woman came from the hospital archive. She held a black envelope, whose wax bore the same dark-red triangle engraved on my little key.
My breath caught.
“Mr. Cole left this,” the woman said. “The instruction was to give it only to Claire Bennett.”
Vanessa leaned forward.
“He was not in a condition to write such a thing.”
“There is a date on the envelope,” the archive employee replied. “Yesterday, ten in the morning.”
I broke the wax. Inside lay three sheets, a small memory card, and one handwritten sentence: “Claire, if you are reading this, do not trust Lucas anymore. And do not blame yourself either.”
Vanessa lost her color.
The lawyer took the sheets.
“It says here that the power of attorney is forged. The signature was photographed from an old contract and transferred onto the new document. The witnesses are fictitious too.”
Lucas stepped back.
“This is nonsense.”
We inserted the memory card into the doctor’s computer. Ethan’s office appeared. In the footage Lucas was standing, and Vanessa was sitting in front of him. The time indicator was four days earlier.
“The accident must look accidental,” Lucas was saying.
“Claire?” Vanessa asked.
“The letters will be enough. She will leave on her own.”
My knees lost their strength. Eleven months earlier, I had left Ethan precisely because of those forged letters. I thought he hated me.
In the recording Vanessa placed a small bottle on the table.
“This will put him to sleep for only a few hours.”
“We must not get the dose wrong,” Lucas answered.
Silence fell in the room. Then Ethan’s voice sounded, as if he had made the recording directly for me:
“Claire, I knew they were planning to separate us. But until I obtained proof, I could not protect you. They hacked your account. And I asked Lucas to tell you the truth. He did not.”
Doctor Sato placed the memory card on the table.
“This must be handed over to the police.”
Vanessa collapsed onto a chair.
“Ethan was still planning to marry me,” she whispered.
“The recording does not confirm that,” I told her.
Just then a nurse rushed out of Ethan’s room.
“The patient opened his eyes. But he says he wants to speak to only one person.”
“Who?” the doctor asked.
The nurse looked toward me.
“Claire Bennett. And he says he thinks the person who planned all this is still in the hospital…”
