At night a barefoot child came to my guarded house, but after her whisper my guard’s face changed

At 12:03 at night, three small knocks rang on the door of my bedroom, and in the house protected by iron gates and armed guards, such a sound almost always meant betrayal, blood, or death.

I opened the door and saw a three-year-old girl on the threshold. She stood barefoot, her flowered shirt falling to her knees, and clutched an old, worn rabbit as if, besides it, she trusted no one else in the whole world.

She raised her head and quietly told me:

“Mr. Adrian, the bad man found us.”

For more than twenty years, I had made such a name for myself in Chicago’s harbor district that grown men lowered their voices when entering a room. But that night, the trembling of this small child made me forget everything.

“Lily, how did you get here?”

“Mommy isn’t waking up.”

Every other question disappeared.

“Where is she?”

Lily looked up to my height and knitted her brows.

“You are very tall. I cannot talk to you from down there like this.”

Then I knelt on the marble floor. The stone under my knees was cold as ice, but suddenly I felt a much worse cold in my chest.

“Is it better now?”

The girl nodded and hugged the rabbit more tightly.

“Mommy came home and her head hurt. Then I heard something breaking. She was lying on the floor. I shook her, called her many times, but she made only a strange sound.”

I stood up, although Lily caught two of my fingers with both hands.

“Wait. There is something else.”

She looked toward the dark corridor. The pendulum of the old clock moved calmly nearby, as if it did not notice the child’s fear in this house.

“The bad man found us.”

“Which bad man?”

“The one Mommy told me never to follow.”

“What is his name?”

“I must not say.”

“You must tell me tonight.”

Lily leaned toward me.

“Victor Kane.”

My breath caught. Three days earlier Victor had sat opposite me in the city center, tapping his fingers on an expensive table and looking straight into my eyes while telling me that everything in my company was in order.

Claire Bennett was the cleaner of my house. Twenty-seven years old, quiet, precise, and almost unnoticed. Until that night, all I knew about her was that she was never late and always wore a small copper bracelet on her left wrist, from which a miniature house-shaped pendant hung.

!!!  Mi madrastra me excluyó de mi propia casa del lago y, al exigir las llaves, el promotor que la acompañaba dejó de sonreír

When we entered her apartment, Claire was lying beside the dresser. Her skin was cold and damp, and her pulse was too fast.

“Call Doctor Grant. Right now,” I said into the phone.

“And lock the gates,” I added to the guard Daniel. “Let no one leave.”

I looked at Lily.

“No one come in either.”

Seventeen minutes later, Doctor Michael Grant stood beside Claire. Outside, the wind struck the windowpanes, while inside, the infusion tube dripped slowly.

“Mommy will wake up,” he told Lily.

Michael looked at me.

“At least two people are doing everything for that.”

Color slowly returned to Claire’s face. For the first time, I realized that not only danger had entered this house. Something had begun working from inside.

In the corridor, Michael grabbed my arm.

“Exhaustion, dehydration, low blood pressure. She has not been taking care of herself for a long time.”

“Anything else?”

He hesitated.

“There is a sedative substance in her body.”

“Did she take it herself?”

“It is possible.”

“You do not believe that yourself.”

Michael looked toward the open door, where Claire lay unconscious, and then said quietly:

“No.”

At that moment, security stepped heavily at the end of the corridor. Daniel was coming quickly, holding a small black folder. He stopped in front of me.

“Mr. Moretti, we found this behind the cabinet in Ms. Bennett’s room. The lock had been broken from outside.”

From the edge of the folder, a small house-shaped object resembling Claire’s copper bracelet could be seen. I reached out, but before I touched it, Daniel suddenly looked at me and said:

“Sir, the outside cameras recorded something. This man did not come to the gate alone…”

His fingers reached the folder’s lock…

Daniel opened the lock, but did not immediately hand me the folder.

“Look at this first,” he told me.

He turned on the camera recording on his phone. On the night monitor, a black van stopped by the gate could be seen. The number plate was covered with mud, although the driver turned toward the camera.

His face could not be seen.

“Is that Victor?” I asked.

“I cannot say. But the van arrived ten minutes before Lily knocked on your door.”

“Where did the driver go?”

Daniel cleared his throat.

!!!  Tras el funeral de mi padre, una enfermera me susurró un secreto y el hombre junto a la iglesia dejó de sonreír

“He disappeared from the camera. As if the earth swallowed him.”

I opened the folder. Inside lay only a small memory card and a folded paper. On the paper, in Claire’s handwriting, it said: “If I do not wake up, do not trust the one who offers you help the fastest.”

At that moment, Claire made a sound from the bed.

“Lily…”

The girl ran toward her.

Claire barely opened her eyes and grabbed my wrist.

“Do not open the card here,” she whispered. “He is already inside.”

“Who?”

Claire looked toward the ceiling.

“The one who has all your keys.”

Above, on the second floor, the sound of heavy footsteps was heard. Daniel reached for his weapon.

Then the corridor light went out.

In the darkness, Lily found my fingers and said only one word:

“Run…”

But I had to remain beside Claire’s bed, because someone from the second floor called my name…

“Adrian!”

The voice came from above, calm and confident. It was Victor Kane’s voice.

Daniel drew his weapon.

“Step back, sir.”

“If he wanted to shoot, he would already have shot us,” I said, although the tight knot in my stomach was telling me something entirely different.

Before I could look toward the stairs, Victor appeared in the light. He was wearing an expensive coat, his hair was perfectly combed, and in his right hand he held the master key to my house.

“A bad night, Adrian,” he said. “Claire needs help. And Lily has to come with me.”

“You entered my house illegally.”

“Your house?” he smiled. “This place will change many things soon.”

Claire tried to sit up on the bed.

“Do not believe him.”

Victor looked at her and his smile disappeared.

“You always talked too much.”

I took the folder.

“Why are you afraid of this?”

For the first time, he became confused. That was exactly what I needed.

Michael brought the small computer standing in the corner of the room. I inserted the memory card. In a few seconds, an audio recording appeared on the screen. Claire’s voice sounded, tired but clear.

“If you are hearing this, Victor Kane has already realized that I found his accounts. In the last six months, he transferred money from three of your warehouses to shell companies. This is not only theft. He is preparing documents to blame the crime on you.”

!!!  Soțul meu a refuzat să-și recunoască fiica în salonul de maternitate, iar când am zâmbit, mâna lui a început să tremure

Victor took a step forward.

“Turn it off.”

The recording continued.

“Lily is my daughter. Her father was Victor’s driver and saw everything on the night when Victor damaged the brakes in Adrian’s brother Marco’s car. They passed it off as an accident. Lily saw Victor. That is why he was hiding us.”

Such silence fell over the room that it seemed everyone had forgotten to breathe.

I looked at Victor.

“Did you kill Marco?”

“This is madness,” he answered. “The invented story of one frightened woman.”

Claire raised her hand.

“No. I stole his accounting records and a copy of the camera footage. Everything is not on the card. The main copy is somewhere else.”

Victor suddenly looked toward Lily. His gaze was so cold that the girl hid behind me.

Daniel blocked his way.

“One more step and I will arrest you.”

Victor smiled bitterly.

“You have no idea whom you are fighting.”

“Now we do,” I told him.

But then a message came to my phone from an unknown number. It contained only one picture: Claire’s room cabinet, photographed a few minutes earlier, and a second small recorder hidden behind it.

Below it was written: “This recording is not for court. Listen alone, Adrian. Your brother said something before his death…”
