Five Years Later, I Met My Former Husband with All Three Sons, and His Calm Face Suddenly Turned Pale

At a Manhattan charity evening, my former husband was first seen by three boys who stood before his eyes as if they had one identical face cut out of the past.

The hall of the Hudson Children’s Foundation was full of crystal chandeliers and the cold flashes of cameras. The smells of expensive perfumes, champagne, and white lilies mixed together. My youngest son, Niko, tugged at the sleeve of my dress.

“Mom, look over there.”

I looked in the direction of his finger.

Gabriel Cross stood beneath the chandelier.

Five years had passed, but I recognized him immediately. Thinner, sterner, and with that old coldness in his eyes because of which men could not raise their voices before him. Beside him stood Serena Vale—the woman because of whom our marriage ended.

My middle son asked me quietly:

“Mom, is this the man in the photograph?”

Gabriel heard.

He turned his head quickly.

“Which photograph are you talking about?”

His gaze stopped first on one boy, then on the second, and finally on the third. All three had dark hair, gray-green eyes, and the same stubborn wrinkle between their eyebrows. The glass in my hand was crushed so hard that I cut my finger.

Gabriel went pale.

“How old are they?” he asked.

“Five.”

Music was playing in the hall, but for me everything fell silent.

Five years since that morning when Gabriel placed divorce papers before me at the breakfast table.

“I have already signed, Claire. You sign too.”

Three days earlier I had taken medicine to his Manhattan office. When the private elevator doors opened, Serena was sitting on his desk, and Gabriel was standing between her knees. Then he kissed her.

I did not say a word. Only the little elephant-shaped hair clip clenched in my hand remained—the one I bought immediately when the doctor told me I would have three children. That day I understood for the first time that I had to protect my future alone.

Soon after the divorce I became ill. The doctor turned the screen toward me.

Three tiny hearts were blinking.

I told Gabriel nothing. I was afraid that he would choose someone else for the children too, just as he had chosen someone else instead of me.

And now they stood before him.

Niko hid behind my dress. Then he cautiously poked his head out.

“Are you our father?”

Gabriel slowly knelt. For the first time I saw that his hands no longer obeyed his strength.

“I…” he began.

Serena grabbed him by the arm.

“Gabriel, don’t.”

He turned toward her.

Fear was written on Serena’s face. Not surprise. Fear.

Gabriel freed his arm and looked into my eyes.

“How long has she known?” he said to me in such a calm voice that even the people standing closest in the hall stepped back.

Serena took a step backward.

And I realized that for five years I had not been the only one hiding a secret.

At that moment a man dressed in black appeared at the other end of the hall. He held a leather folder in his hand. He nodded to Gabriel, then came straight toward me.

“Mrs. Cross, it is time for you to know why Serena never told you the truth,” he said, reaching for the folder’s clasp…

The folder’s clasp opened, but the man did not hand it to me yet.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“Daniel Reed. Five years ago I was Gabriel’s head of security.”

Gabriel looked toward him.

“You disappeared that night.”

“Because everyone in your house believed that the children did not exist.”

Serena lost her color.

“Be quiet, Daniel.”

“I kept quiet for five years,” he answered. “But today the boys are here.”

Gabriel took a step toward me.

“Claire, did you know that someone had hidden this?”

“I only knew that you no longer wanted to see me.”

Pain flashed in his eyes, though it disappeared immediately.

Daniel opened the folder and took out a small memory card placed inside.

“This recording will change everything. But before I show it to you, you must know: that night, not only one message disappeared from the clinic.”

“What do you mean?” Gabriel asked.

Daniel looked at Serena.

“Someone also found the address of your children.”

A chill ran down my back. I pulled the three boys closer to me.

Gabriel clenched his teeth.

“Who?”

Daniel turned on his phone. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

“The answer is already on its way,” he said. “And if I am guessing correctly, they do not even have ten minutes left…”

The phone rang again.

Daniel switched the call to speaker mode.

“Can you hear Mrs. Cross?” The man’s voice was low and hoarse.

I could not say a word.

“Do not take the children home tonight.”

Gabriel snatched the phone from Daniel.

“Who are you?”

“The one who five years ago saw more in your family than you did, Cross.”

The call ended.

Serena put her hand against the wall. The diamond bracelet on her wrist trembled.

“This is impossible,” she whispered.

“Then why do you recognize this voice?” I asked.

She looked at me and for the first time could no longer hide herself.

Daniel took sealed papers from the folder.

“It is time for you to learn everything. Five years ago, when the doctor confirmed the triplet pregnancy, a message was sent from the clinic to Gabriel’s personal number. Serena read the message.”

Gabriel looked toward her.

“What are you saying?”

“She deleted the message from your phone, then paid the doctor so that a second copy would not be sent. But that was not enough. She sped up your divorce and also hid the clinic’s address from Claire.”

“It’s a lie,” Serena said, although her voice was already trembling.

Daniel put the memory card on the table.

“Watch the recording.”

A small office room appeared on the screen. Serena from five years earlier stood there. She held my medical file in her hand.

“If Gabriel finds out that he will have three sons, I will not be able to marry him,” Serena said on the screen. “His father will use the children as heirs, and he will never separate Claire from him.”

Someone in the hall held their breath.

Gabriel moved closer to the screen.

“Why do you have this recording?”

!!!  PART 4 — I found my townhouse key on my husband’s mistress’s bracelet at a Manhattan party, and my husband suddenly stopped smiling

“Because that night your father knew too,” Daniel answered. “He told me that the children posed a danger and that their trail had to disappear.”

Serena shook her head.

“I only wanted marriage.”

“And for that you hid my children from me?” I asked.

“I thought you would use them against me.”

“I raised them alone for five years.”

Gabriel lowered his eyes. Then he looked at the boys. Niko came to him holding a small plastic dinosaur.

“Are you really our father?”

Gabriel extended his hand, but stopped before touching him.

“Yes,” he said. “And I found out far too late.”

At that moment a new message arrived on Daniel’s phone. He read it and his face changed.

“What happened?” Gabriel asked.

Daniel turned the screen toward me. There was only one sentence written there: “The taking of the children has already begun.”

The sound of car tires was heard outside. Gabriel looked at the window and said quietly:

“That sound belongs to my father’s people…”
