Five Years After Divorcing My Husband, I Met Him with Three Children, but His Calm Face Suddenly Turned Pale

At a charity evening, my three five-year-old sons went straight to the man who had never known of their existence.

The hall of the Hudson Children’s Foundation was arranged on the top floor of Manhattan’s most expensive hotel. White light spread across the floor from the crystal chandeliers, waiters carried champagne on silver trays, while I heard only one thing — the sound of my children’s little shoes on the marble.

“Mom, may I take this?” Leo held out a paper airplane toward me.

“If you don’t slide it across the floor, you may.”

At that moment he tugged my arm and looked to the other side.

“Mom… that man is in the picture.”

I froze.

Gabriel Cross stood about twenty steps away. My former husband was wearing a dark suit, and at his neck was a silver clasp — exactly like the one I used to give him during the first year of our marriage. For five years I had seen his face only in magazines and in that old photograph the children were never supposed to find.

Serena Vale stood beside him.

The woman because of whom Gabriel ended our marriage.

Gabriel faced federal investigations, armed rivals, and death threats as though he had calculated everything in advance. But when all three of my boys looked at him, his right hand squeezed the glass so hard that the crystal made a thin sound.

“What picture?” he asked.

His gaze moved to me.

I could not answer. It was already too late.

Niko and Eli stood beside Leo. All three had the same dark hair, the same gray-green eyes, and the stubborn crease between their eyebrows. For the first time, I saw not anger but fear on Gabriel’s face.

“How old are they?” he asked me.

“Five.”

His jaw tightened.

“Claire…”

“Yes.”

“They…”

“They are yours.”

The smile that had appeared on Serena’s lips immediately disappeared. She looked at the boys, then looked at me and said quietly:

“This is impossible.”

“What was impossible was that for five years you never once asked where I was.”

“I didn’t know you were pregnant,” Gabriel answered me quietly.

“You didn’t know there were three either.”

Leo grabbed the hem of my dress.

“Mom, is he our father?”

I had heard this question in dreams for five years. Each time I woke up before I could say the answer.

And now Gabriel stood before me, while behind him his security detail was silently tensing.

“Perhaps he should answer himself,” I said.

Gabriel looked at the boys. Then he came closer to me.

“Where were you five years ago?”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine Schwägerin nannte mich vor vierzig Gästen eine graue Bettlerin – doch als der Bürgermeister auf mich zuging, verstummte der ganze Saal

“Where your lawyer threw me out.”

“I didn’t say that…”

“You only signed the divorce papers.”

I remembered that rainy Tuesday, the cold kitchen of his house, and the trace of my red lipstick left on a coffee cup.

“The papers are already ready,” he told me then.

“What papers?”

“Divorce.”

Three days earlier I had gone to his Manhattan office because I had left my migraine medicine at home. When the elevator doors opened, Serena was sitting on his desk, and Gabriel was standing in front of her. The copper clock hanging on the wall rang at exactly the moment Gabriel kissed Serena.

I turned back.

Twelve days later I learned that I was pregnant.

With triplets.

I never told Gabriel. Not out of revenge. I simply still had his words in my ear: “I have already chosen another life.”

Now that life stood before him — in the form of three little boys.

Serena whispered something to the head of security. He took out his phone.

“You must leave this evening immediately,” she told me.

Gabriel turned his head toward her.

“No one is leaving the hall.”

The old power returned to his voice, but I had already seen his eyes escape toward his own lawyer, Daniel Hart, who appeared at the door holding a black folder.

Daniel looked at my surroundings, then approached Gabriel.

“Mr. Cross, you must see this right now.”

His fingers touched the folder’s clasp. I took one step forward. I had waited five years for this moment, but I could not imagine that the answer would be in precisely the folder Daniel was slowly opening…

Daniel placed the folder on the table. The hall’s music was still playing, but everything became silent for me.

“What is it?” Gabriel asked sternly.

“A document that should have been handed over to you five years ago.”

“You are telling me now?”

“Because I found it now.”

Serena turned pale.

I looked at the folder. A small copper clasp gleamed at its corner — like the one with which I used to lock Gabriel’s old study when we were still husband and wife.

“Don’t touch it,” Serena told me.

“Why?” I asked.

She could not answer.

Gabriel looked toward her.

“Serena, what do you know?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

At that moment Niko held out his hand to Gabriel.

“If you are my father, will you come with us?”

Gabriel bent down, but my heart began beating faster than his answer sounded.

Daniel opened the folder. On the first page was my name. Below it was a date — nine days after the divorce.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi suegra prohibió a mi esposa tocar un solo alimento, pero cuando mencioné la cuenta de ahorros dejó de sonreír

“Claire, did you write this letter?” he asked me.

“At that time I was the mother of three children and did not know whom I could believe.”

Gabriel snatched the paper.

“This is my signature.”

“No,” I said quietly. “This is not your signature. This is the handwriting of the person who knew that the truth would destroy your life.”

Daniel took out the next page.

“And before you read this, you must know that someone broke into the hotel’s security system tonight…”

The number of our three boys’ room appeared on the screen…

When I saw the boys’ room number on the screen, strength left my legs.

“Where are they?” I demanded angrily.

“In the children’s corner, with a security employee,” Daniel answered. “But someone requested their names and room number ten minutes ago.”

Gabriel immediately took out his phone.

“Lock all exits. No one goes to the children except me.”

“I am coming with you,” I told him.

“No.”

“They are my children.”

“And mine too, as I have just learned.”

For the first time there was such pain in his voice that I could not hide it. Still, I turned toward Daniel.

“First tell me what this letter is.”

Daniel led us into a closed conference room in the corner of the hall. He placed a small dust-colored voice recorder on the table.

“This recording is from Gabriel’s office,” he said. “And now I know why it was hidden.”

He pressed the button.

First there was noise, then Serena’s voice.

“If Claire finds out that she is pregnant, Gabriel will never belong to me.”

Then a man’s voice sounded. Daniel recognized it immediately.

“Destroy the letter. Tell her that Gabriel himself requested the divorce and does not want to take care of the children.”

My fingers clutched the edge of the table.

“Who was that?” I asked.

“Victor Cross,” Daniel said. “Gabriel’s father.”

Gabriel sat down in the chair. It was as though the floor beneath him had disappeared.

“My father was already dead five years ago,” he said.

“But the recording was made several days before his death. I found it then, when I was checking the archive of his study. Your letter was there too, Claire. Victor read it and did not send it.”

Gabriel looked toward me.

“You wrote to me?”

“One letter. Only one. I told you that I was pregnant. I asked you to speak to me at least once before you left for good.”

“I never received that letter.”

“I know.”

Daniel took the last sheet from the envelope.

“This is the laboratory result. Before the gala we secretly took samples, because Gabriel still needed proof.”

!!!  Mi esposo me llevó a una maternidad con los ojos rojos y pidió que aceptara algo; cuando mencionó el nombre, su sonrisa desapareció

He unfolded the sheet.

“The three children are biological children of the same father. The probability is ninety-nine point nine percent.”

Silence fell in the room.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

“They are my children,” he said.

I did not answer. For five years I had wanted these words, but now they contained more responsibility than joy.

“Why did you hide it from me?” he asked.

“Because your signature told me that I and our children were nothing to you.”

Tears appeared in his eyes, but I did not step back.

At that moment Daniel’s phone rang. He listened to several words, and his face changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Serena is gone. And her car was found by the hotel’s rear exit.”

Gabriel stood up.

“We are going to the children.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You must know this first. In the car we found a second copy of your letter from five years ago… and your present children’s address was written on it.”

One of the children screamed beyond the door. I ran, but at the end of the corridor I found a locked door. From the other side someone was calmly saying:

“Mom, a man came in here…”

Gabriel placed his hand on the door, while I understood for the first time that the past had not merely returned, but had come to our children…
