Part 4 — After the divorce, my ex-husband’s family asked me for forgiveness, but Julian’s smile disappeared at one gesture from my lawyer

“Mrs. Eloine, someone has entered the house. Your brother is visible on the camera, but he is not alone…”

The security employee’s voice was trembling.

Julian grabbed the telephone.

“Who is there?”

“Mr. Julian,” I said, “this is my telephone.”

He immediately let go, as if he had touched hot metal.

Sterling looked at Alan.

“The police are already on their way,” Alan said.

“The police?” Julian became furious. “In my house?”

“In the house where people who entered illegally are,” Sterling replied.

Julian looked around the room. A few minutes earlier everyone here had stood on his side. Now his aunt was standing by the window, while his uncle was quickly reading something on his telephone.

Siena picked up her bag.

“I am leaving.”

“Sit down!” Julian shouted at her.

“You told me that everything was under control.”

“Everything is under control!”

“Then why are the police coming?”

Julian could not answer.

Beatrice was still on the line.

“Julian, return my card! I cannot pay the hotel bill in Paris!”

“Mom, this is not important now!”

“What is more important than me?”

I looked at the telephone. This very question closed a fifteen-year-old door for me.

“Your son is learning for the first time that other people also exist in the world,” I told her.

Sterling played the recording again from the beginning.

Julian’s voice sounded again:

“If Eloine does not agree, I will destroy her life. No one will believe her. She always goes silent.”

This time Julian listened to his own voice.

Not to my account. Not to someone else’s interpretation.

To his own voice.

His face slowly collapsed.

“Turn it off,” he said.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because this is a private conversation.”

“You yourself turned it into a threat.”

He sank into the chair. The wooden back creaked.

“Eloine, I was simply afraid.”

“I was afraid too.”

“But you never said so.”

“You never asked.”

The police arrived at the house in ten minutes. The camera footage showed Julian’s cousin and a private technician entering through the back door. They had tried to take a laptop, documents, and bank codes from my office.

At first the technician denied everything.

Then Sterling showed him his own face on the screen.

“What will you say about this?”

The man fell silent.

The cousin looked at Julian.

“Tell me that I was only supposed to make a copy of the files.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

“I did not tell them to steal anything.”

“But you told them to enter the house,” I replied.

That night no one was arrested before a final decision, but both men were taken to the station, the equipment was sealed, and Julian was forbidden from approaching me.

Beatrice called me twenty-one more times from Paris.

I did not answer the first ten calls.

On the eleventh I listened to her voice message.

“Eloine, dear, family should stand above mistakes.”

In the twelfth message she was already threatening me.

In the sixteenth she was crying.

In the twenty-first only breathing could be heard.

I called back on none of them.

The next morning Julian’s lawyer called me himself.

“Mrs. Eloine, my client is ready for an agreement.”

“Yesterday he was saying that he would resist everything, wasn’t he?”

“Yesterday the situation looked different.”

“No,” I told him. “Yesterday it looked for the first time as it really was.”

After a long pause the lawyer quietly exhaled.

“I can no longer help you in this case if he continues hiding facts from me.”

This was the first time that a person standing on Julian’s side turned his back on him.

The divorce process ended three months later.

In court I sat opposite him. I was no longer wearing the dress in which he had once told me that I did not look like a “serious woman.” I wore a blue jacket, my hair was tied back, and I had fastened the silver key clasp near my heart.

The judge examined the financial documents, the audio recording, the expert’s conclusion, and the bank statements.

Julian admitted the forged signature.

He admitted using money from my account.

He admitted that he had threatened me by calling my clients.

Beatrice’s expenses turned out to be his responsibility, because the card was connected to my business account and Julian knew about it.

The court ordered him to cover the debts, return the illegally taken money, and reimburse my defense expenses. The right to my house remained with me. The luxurious apartment planned for him and Siena no longer existed—the bank blocked the transfer and the down payment was lost.

I was not happy.

When Julian wrapped his hands around his head, I felt only exhaustion.

Justice was not a loud celebration.

It was simply a door that my hand finally closed.

That same evening I entered the house.

His closet was almost empty. Only one photograph had remained on the bed—the day of our wedding. In the photograph Julian was smiling, while I had my head resting on his shoulder.

I did not pick up the photograph.

Instead, I opened the lower drawer of his office all the way. There, where I had found the black leather diary, I saw the old packaging of the silver key.

Inside lay a small piece of paper.

“Let us open every door together,” was written in Julian’s handwriting.

I folded the paper and threw it into the trash.

But I kept the clasp.

Six months later I opened a small office on the other side of the city. I was already offering companies translations of medical documents in my own name. A whiteboard hung on the wall, and a potted lemon tree stood by the window.

In the mornings I made coffee myself.

I did not ask anyone whether I was allowed to.

On Thursdays my niece, Nina, came to me. She drew at my desk while I worked.

One day she handed me a sheet of paper.

“What is this?” I asked.

“A house,” she answered.

On the sheet she had drawn a small house with every window open. By the door stood a woman holding a small key.

“The woman is not alone,” Nina told me. “She is with herself.”

Something caught in my throat.

“Who taught you this?”

“You.”

That night I smiled for the first time without pain following behind it.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Minha cunhada deixou os três filhos na cozinha da minha mãe e disse que ela não fazia nada — então o sorriso dela desapareceu

The first snow of winter came in December. As I left the office, flakes fell on the street lamps, and the roofs of the cars were covered in white.

Then I received a message from Julian.

“I want to talk to you. I have changed. Mother regrets it too. Can we start again?”

A few minutes later a second message arrived.

“Meet me just once.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

The old Eloine would probably have answered. She would have tried to explain, calm him, save him.

But that woman no longer existed.

I wrote to him:

“I do not want to return to you anymore. My life is where I no longer need to protect my own peace.”

Then I blocked the number.

When I returned home, I attached Nina’s drawing to the refrigerator with a magnet. The silver key clasp touched coldly against my heart.

I stood by the window and watched the snow.

For fifteen years I thought that Julian held the key.

In truth, the door had always been in front of me.

I simply opened it for the first time.

Missed the beginning?
