Part 4 — My Former Husband Who Broke Into My House Was Expecting to Find Another Man, but His Face Changed When He Saw the Child

Declan’s phone froze in his hand.

“What does ‘before that child was born’ mean?” he asked.

Vivian did not answer. We heard only the sound of the call ending.

For several seconds no one moved.

Then Mirian held out the phone to me.

“Is this conversation recorded?”

“Automatically,” Declan said.

“Then save it. This is evidence too.”

Declan went toward the door.

“I’m going to my mother.”

“No,” I stopped him. “That is exactly what she expects. She wants you to go alone and put everything back on her rules.”

He turned around.

“My child is in danger.”

“Now you are on his side for the first time. Do not make the first mistake.”

I said these words to the person I had blamed for five months. It was strange, but at that moment he no longer resembled my former husband. He looked more like a man who had discovered in one night that his life was being destroyed not by his own hand, but by someone else’s lie.

Mirian called the police, then child protective services and the duty judge of the court. Declan paced back and forth in the room. His expensive watch struck the table with every movement.

“Elena, I need to know everything,” he said to me.

“You already know everything.”

“No. Why did you hide James from me?”

I went to the window. Snow was silently gathering on the roofs.

“Because your mother was afraid not of the child’s existence, but of his influence. And I was afraid that you would take him from me with money and lawyers. And you were the kind of person who always thought that even truth could pay a price.”

Declan lowered his head.

“You are right.”

Those two words hurt more than any of his accusations.

At two o’clock at night Mirian received a new call. The documents filed by Vivian in court appeared on every screen. Among them was a certificate prepared in the name of my psychiatrist, supposedly stating that I was in a serious condition after giving birth.

“This is false,” I said.

“I know,” Mirian replied. “The doctor has already confirmed it. But there is one more thing.”

!!!  În ziua absolvirii, cele trei nepoate ale mele au urcat pe scenă cu câte o nasture albastru, iar mama a încremenit

He started a video on the screen.

In the video Vivian stood in a hospital corridor. She was speaking to my doctor. She was holding a small black folder.

“If Elena gives birth to the child, you must convince her mother that cooperating with us is better for her,” Vivian was saying. “Otherwise, this family will stop covering all her expenses.”

Declan placed his hand on the screen.

“When was this?”

“Two days before James’s birth,” Mirian said.

This time Declan did not deny it.

He even listened to his own words. That same night Mirian found the audio recording of our final divorce meeting, which was stored in the security system of Declan’s office.

His voice could be heard in the recording:

“If you have another man, Elena, you will get nothing more from me.”

My voice at that time answered:

“I do not have another man. I am pregnant.”

Then the sound of a door slamming was heard.

Declan sat down in the chair.

For the first time he heard his own words the way I had heard them that night.

“I didn’t hear it,” he whispered.

“Because before leaving, you did not listen to me anymore.”

At six in the morning Vivian called again. This time Declan answered and turned on speakerphone.

“Son, come home. Everything will be resolved.”

“No, Mother. Everything has already begun.”

“That woman is turning you against me.”

“She raised my child alone.”

“You do not know what this woman is capable of.”

“I know what you were capable of.”

Silence.

Then Vivian’s voice broke for the first time.

“If you fight against me, you will lose the entire company.”

Declan looked at James.

“Then for the first time I will have to choose something more valuable than money.”

Vivian ended the call.

That same day the court rejected the request for temporary custody. The doctors confirmed that my certificate had been forged. The security guard admitted that, on Vivian’s orders, he had not let me into Declan’s office that night. The assistant signed a statement that she had indeed received my message and then deleted it at Vivian’s direction.

An investigation was opened into Vivian and her lawyer.

Declan celebrated neither the victory in court nor his mother’s troubles. He only stood in the corridor and looked at his hands.

“You are free,” he told me.

“I was before that too. It simply required a fight every day.”

Several weeks later Declan commissioned an independent investigation in his company. Vivian resigned and left the city. The case brought against her was considered by the court, but I did not attend a single hearing. My case was not revenge. I only wanted my son to live in the truth.

The hardest thing turned out to be something else.

Declan held James alone for the first time.

He was sitting in my small apartment, putting the baby to sleep in his arms, and had such a careful expression, as if even breathing were an unnecessary movement.

“You can leave if you want,” I told him.

“I don’t want to leave.”

“Then stay only if you want fatherhood and not control.”

He nodded.

“I have to prove this to you every day.”

“Yes.”

He proved it.

Not with expensive gifts. Not with lawyers.

In the mornings he changed the diapers himself. At night he carried the baby in his arms until I could sleep for at least a few hours. At James’s first laugh he smiled as if all his wealth had lost its meaning in one moment.

Three months later I moved from Seattle to Portland. I started working at a small publishing house, where I edited children’s books. In the mornings I drank coffee by the window. James played on the floor with colored blocks. His first drawing hung on the wall—three curved lines and a large yellow circle.

Declan came every Saturday.

Sometimes for only one hour.

Sometimes for the whole day.

But he always called in advance.

One evening, during the first snow, I received a message on my phone. It was Vivian.

“You and Declan can still bring the family back. Come to New York. Let everything begin again.”

!!!  TEIL 4 — Ich beschuldigte meine schwangere Reinigungskraft des Diebstahls, doch als sie die Tür dieses verlassenen Hauses öffnete, wurde mein Gesicht bleich

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I sent a short reply:

“Our family was not left there. It is here now.”

And I deleted the message.

That night I was putting James to sleep. Declan stood by the window and watched the snow.

“Do you know what I am most afraid of?” he asked me.

“What?”

“That one day my son will ask me why I was not there at his birth.”

I touched the little copper bell attached to the blanket.

“Then tell him the truth.”

“And if he asks why I could not protect you?”

“Tell him that you realized it late. But in the end, you realized it.”

Declan nodded.

James moved his hand in his sleep, and the bell jingled very quietly.

Once this sound was a sign of fear for me—the sign that someone might take my child away from me.

Now it sounded like the sound of returning home.

I closed the window, turned off the room’s light, and for the first time in a long while I no longer needed to run away from anyone.

The little bell jingled again.

This time I locked the door from the inside.

Missed the beginning?
