The Pregnant Wife Was Crying Alone at Home, While the Mother-in-Law Denied Everything — Until the Recording Erased Her Smile

When I opened the door to the nursery, my pregnant wife was sitting on the floor, had a reddened mark on her cheek, and immediately covered her face when she saw me.

“Please, don’t ask me anything,” Claire told me quietly.

Outside, October rain streaked the windows silver. The room smelled of fresh paint and cedar. The baby’s crib was still lying in its box, and beside it was a small copper music box, shaped like a lighthouse, which Claire’s father had given us after our wedding. Every time it was opened, the same gentle melody played.

Now it was silent.

“Where did that happen to you?” I asked.

“I fell on the stairs.”

Claire answered me far too quickly. And I knew people’s lies well. At the tables of billion-dollar deals, I had often seen men smile while they stole millions from us.

“Which stairs?”

She did not answer me.

I noticed dark marks of fingers on her wrist. When I tried to bring my hand to her cheek, she recoiled. At that moment I became so frightened, as if someone else were standing in the room.

“Who touched you?” I asked.

“No one.”

“Claire.”

“The baby is moving. I’m fine.”

“I’ll call Dr. Harris.”

“No!”

Her voice cut through the room. Then she wrapped her arms around her stomach and turned her eyes toward the door.

“Just today I want everything to be normal,” she told me.

I nodded, although something inside me had already shattered.

“I’ll make you tea.”

I kissed her forehead and left the room. In the glass of the door I saw her reflection. At the sound of my footsteps, her smile immediately disappeared.

As I came down the stairs, I heard whispering from below. The house manager, Nora Bennett, and the young assistant, Lea, were standing beside the kitchen.

“She came again,” Lea was saying.

“I know,” Nora replied.

“The master doesn’t know?”

“He is almost never home.”

I stopped on the step.

“Who came?” I asked.

Both of them raised their heads.

The dish towel fell from Nora’s hand.

“Your mother,” she said.

My mother, Victoria Caldwell, wore pearls even at breakfast and never touched people in a way that allowed them to forget it. She had disliked Claire from the beginning. And I justified everything.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Meu pai me entregou a um mendigo diante da aldeia, mas quando ele tocou meu pulso, meu cunhado empalideceu

Claire’s father was a music teacher, and her mother had a small framing workshop. My family, meanwhile, owned hotels, ports, and companies whose names were carved into marble.

“What did my mother do today?” I asked Nora.

Nora took Lea aside.

“First you need to see,” she told me.

“What?”

“The cameras.”

I entered my study. The walnut-colored walls of the room were filled with old family photographs. I put the small copper lighthouse box on the desk, which had unintentionally followed me from upstairs. My fingers were trembling.

We had thirty-two outdoor cameras and nine cameras in common areas in the house. Claire hated them, so the sound was turned off and we had not installed cameras in private rooms.

I opened the archive.

The time appeared on the screen: two forty-seven in the afternoon.

Claire entered the kitchen.

Four minutes later, a black car stopped in the yard. My mother got out and turned her own key in the lock.

Claire immediately stiffened.

Victoria pointed at her stomach. Claire shook her head. Mother came closer. Claire stepped back.

Then Victoria grabbed her by the wrist…

Victoria’s fingers were clearly visible on the screen. Claire tried to free herself.

I stopped the recording.

“Nora, why is there no sound here?” I asked.

“You turned it off yourself, sir.”

“Then there must be another recording.”

Lea bit her lip.

“That day I turned on the old baby monitor. I was afraid for Claire.”

Nora handed me a small memory card.

On the screen, my mother was cornering Claire. Then she swung her hand and slapped her. Claire did not resist. She only turned her face away.

While I was watching the screen, the phone came to life.

It was an unknown number.

“If you want to protect your wife and child, do not meet your mother alone,” a woman’s voice said. “Tomorrow morning Claire will be taken by force to a psychiatric clinic.”

“Who are you?”

The call ended immediately.

Nora gripped my arm.

“Sir, Victoria had another conversation in the kitchen. I didn’t hear it to the end, but I heard one word — power of attorney.”

The nursery door opened upstairs. Claire stood at the top of the stairs, white and frightened.

“Ethan,” she told me, “now they know everything…”

Then a heavy blow sounded on the door…

The blow on the door sounded again. This time the house seemed to feel it with its whole body.

Nora took Claire by the hand and brought her into the study. Lea rushed to the window. Outside stood two black cars, and behind them my mother’s lawyer, Gideon Price, was calmly waiting under an umbrella.

“Don’t open it,” Nora said.

“This is my house,” I answered.

“That is exactly why they came,” Claire said.

Her voice trembled so much that I wrapped both arms around her stomach.

“Now you will tell me the truth.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

“Your mother has been telling me for months that I am endangering your company. She says that because of the pregnancy and the medications, my mind has become confused. She wanted me to sign a power of attorney that would transfer all your shares into the family trust.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because every time I tried, she threatened me. She said she would have your career destroyed and take the baby away from me.”

Nora put the memory card on the table.

“It is the recording from the monitor,” she said. “Everything can be heard.”

I opened the file.

Victoria’s voice sounded in the room.

“You will sign, Claire, or tomorrow everyone will learn that you are mentally unstable.”

“I’ll tell Ethan.”

“Your husband will never oppose his mother.”

Then the sound of a slap was heard.

Claire covered her mouth with her hand. Nora lowered her eyes, and Lea began to cry silently.

“There’s more,” Lea said.

She turned on the second file.

There Victoria was speaking to some man.

“As soon as Claire is in the clinic, Ethan will sign. If he refuses, we will tell him that the child is in danger. The doctor’s report is already ready.”

The man asked:

“And if it is a boy?”

“Then the heir will be under our control.”

I stared at the screen. My mother’s voice was unchanged, as if she were talking about the weather.

They knocked on the door once more.

!!!  Soacra mea și-a alungat părinții de la vila mea de la malul mării, în timp ce străinii beau șampanie pe terasa mea, dar un plic gri avea să-i distrugă toate minciunile

“Ethan!” Gideon called. “Mrs. Caldwell says that your wife is in a crisis condition and must leave accompanied by a doctor.”

Claire gripped my hand tightly.

“Don’t let them take me.”

“You’re not going anywhere.”

I opened the door.

Victoria stood behind it. In her hand she held a dark folder, and on her face was a calm, almost compassionate smile.

“Son,” she said, “all of this is being done for your wife’s own good.”

I turned on the recording.

Her own mother’s voice sounded in the room. Victoria’s smile disappeared. Gideon lowered his eyes.

“This is illegally obtained material,” he said.

“No,” Nora replied. “The device was purchased in my name.”

Victoria looked at Claire.

“You have no idea whom you trust.”

“Now I know whom I no longer trust,” I told her.

At that moment my phone rang. It was Dr. Harris.

“Ethan, someone changed something in Claire’s medical records,” he told me. “And I found one more thing. The father’s blood type is impossible for the child.”

Claire held her breath.

I looked at my mother.

For the first time I saw Victoria’s face completely changed. But the doctor’s next words sounded precisely when another car stopped behind the door…
