Part 4 — When I was leaving the airport with my children, a gray jeep followed us, and when my ex-husband saw it, the color drained from his face

Daniel’s message was still visible on the screen when Adrian pressed his hand against the table.

“Who did you write to?”

“It is late,” Daniel said.

“For me or for you?”

Daniel smiled, but the smile immediately disappeared when two armed guards entered the room. They should have stood on Daniel’s side, yet they pointed their weapons at him.

“Mr. Mercer, the police are below the building,” one of them said.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“You are my people.”

“Not anymore.”

Just then I heard sirens in the street.

For six years I had lived far from Adrian’s world. That night, however, I stood in his world, with two children behind my back and a truth that could no longer return me to my old life.

Daniel was handcuffed.

Adrian took a step toward me.

“Evelyn, the children are safe.”

“Not yet,” I said. “Not while Laura is free.”

He nodded.

“The police are looking for her too.”

“You knew she was alive?”

“Not for the last three years. I thought they had killed her.”

Daniel began to laugh.

“Neither of you will understand anything anyway. Laura does not need the children. She needs that recording.”

“Which recording?” I asked.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Tell her what your first wife had in her hands.”

The air in the room seemed to disappear.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“Evelyn knew nothing.”

“But you knew,” I said.

“Your research was not only a medical project. In the laboratory data, you accidentally discovered routes, accounts, and names connected to my network. You yourself did not understand what you were seeing.”

I remembered the Boston laboratory, the nights when I analyzed strange files and thought they were simply research errors. I remembered the small red paper airplane the children made for me in those days when I spent dozens of hours at the computer. Ethan drew a golden star on it, and Emma wrote my initials on the wing.

Adrian continued:

“Your reports contained evidence that would put them in prison. That is why you had to disappear. I thought the divorce would protect you.”

“And you simply left me and told me that you loved another.”

“I know.”

For the first time, his voice did not sound like that of a man who could control everything.

!!!  Ich widersetzte mich dem gefährlichsten Mann der Stadt und servierte ihm ein verbotenes Gericht – dann erstarrte sein Leibwächter

“You killed my trust, Adrian.”

“I know.”

“And I raised the children alone.”

“I know.”

“Then do not ask me to forget everything because of one recording.”

“I am not asking.”

That same night we went to the police station. Laura’s whereabouts were still unknown. We waited for her at the old harbor warehouse, but there we found only dusty boxes, broken lights, and one sentence written on the wall: “Adrian first lied to you when he thought he was protecting you.”

Two hours later Laura herself called.

“I want the children,” she said.

“You will not get them,” Adrian answered.

“Then everyone will learn where the main file is.”

I took the phone from him.

“The main file is with me.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Evelyn…”

“Six years ago you hid the truth from me. Now I will decide whom I reveal it to.”

Laura was silent for several seconds.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

“For the first time, I know exactly.”

The police recorded our conversation. The file Adrian thought had been lost existed in a secure storage facility together with my laboratory reports. With that data, it became clear how money and weapons moved along different routes through the city.

Laura was arrested the next morning in a parking lot while trying to flee the city with a false passport.

Her arrest also broke Daniel.

He confessed everything.

Who had opened my children’s medical records.

Who had sent my address to Laura.

Who had planned the children’s abduction.

And who had forced Adrian, six years earlier, to say the cruelest words to me.

Several weeks later I stood as a witness in Daniel’s case in the courtroom. Adrian was not sitting beside me. He knew that this was my truth, not a continuation of his defense.

The prosecutor played the old recording on the screen.

“Evelyn must believe that I love another woman.”

The voice of my own former husband sounded through the courtroom.

Adrian lowered his head.

Daniel heard his own voice for the first time, when in the recording he said: “If she resists you, you will not save the children either.”

!!!  Mio marito partì per il mare prima del mio parto gemellare, ma appena entrò in casa smise di sorridere

He collapsed into the chair.

“I did not say that,” he whispered.

The prosecutor lowered the volume.

“That is your voice.”

Daniel covered his face with his hands. The man who had frightened others for years could no longer hide from his own words.

The court sentenced him to a long imprisonment. Laura was sentenced as well. The state confiscated part of Adrian’s businesses, and he himself closed the rest and handed them over to the investigation.

I was not happy.

I simply no longer had to protect them.

Adrian obtained the right to communicate with the children through the court, but at the very first meeting he came to me.

“If you ever want, I will see the children,” he said.

“You will see them when they want it.”

“And you?”

“I will no longer be the gatekeeper between you and them.”

That was the only promise I could make.

That same evening I entered the hotel room, where the children stood around me like memories from six years earlier. Their small red paper airplane lay on the table. The golden star was still visible on the wing, though the folded place had opened.

Emma told me:

“Mom, are we going home now?”

“Yes.”

“To Chicago?”

I looked at the city lights through the window.

“To a home where we will no longer hide from anyone.”

Three months later I started my research group again in Boston. I rented a small apartment near the river. In the mornings the children went to school, and I worked in the laboratory. In the evenings we cooked pasta together, Ethan washed the dishes, and Emma stuck new drawings on the kitchen wall.

The first snow came at the beginning of December.

Emma stood by the window.

“Will Dad come?”

“Not today,” I told her.

“Are you angry with him?”

I thought about the answer for a long time.

“Once I was. Now I simply no longer expect from him what he cannot give.”

Ethan picked up his old airplane from the table.

“Shall we take this to the new home anyway?”

“Of course.”

That night I received a message from Adrian.

“I have changed. Please speak to me at least once as you did before.”

!!!  Soțul meu pretindea că îngheață într-un hotel ieftin, în timp ce eu mâncam hrișcă fără sare ca să strângem bani pentru mașina visurilor noastre, dar fotografia surorii lui de la mare a schimbat totul

A second sentence was written beneath it:

“I still love you.”

Earlier, those words could have changed my entire life.

Now I put the phone on the table and sent a reply only an hour later.

“I am no longer the woman who can live waiting for your choice. I will speak with you for the children. For myself—not anymore.”

He did not write to me again.

And I went into the kitchen. Ethan and Emma were sitting on the floor and making a new airplane. This time they drew three golden stars on the red paper.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Me, Emma, and you,” Ethan said.

“Not Dad?”

Emma looked toward the window, where snow was falling silently.

“He can be too, if he ever stands in the right place.”

I smiled at this answer.

Not because Adrian would return.

But because my children were no longer waiting for someone to save them for the first time.

I placed the airplane on the windowsill. In the morning the sun struck its golden stars and scattered small bright spots throughout the room.

Six years ago I thought that my life had ended.

That night I had simply closed the wrong door.

Now the light was on in the house.

Missed the beginning?
