Part 4 — My Ten-Year-Old Daughter’s Test Stopped the Hospital, and Her Father Pointed at My Husband, Making the Security Guard Turn Pale

After Daniel’s words, the air in the corridor seemed to become heavier.

“Who requested the old record?” I asked.

“They do not know yet. But the signature is forged.”

The police officer took the phone from him.

“We will all remain in the rooms until we retrieve the record.”

Eric tried to rise from the chair.

“I would not do that.”

“For now no one is asking you whether you did it,” the woman answered. “Just sit down.”

Daniel spoke for the first time.

“Maya, I did not record it accidentally. Sophie asked me to keep her voice. She told me that her father forced her to do the same thing every week.”

“Why didn’t you tell me anything?”

“Because I was afraid Sophie would become even more frightened. And also because after every conversation with Eric, you blamed yourself.”

These words hurt me more than Eric’s shouting.

Sophie was prepared for surgery. The nurse wrapped a thin white bracelet around her wrist. She looked at the bracelet and touched the small plastic clasp with her finger.

“Mom, will Daniel be here?”

“We will both be here.”

“Dad too?”

I was silent for several seconds.

“Dad will now have business with the doctors and the police.”

Sophie lowered her eyes.

“I did not want anything bad for him.”

“I know.”

“I just wanted it to stop.”

“Now it will stop.”

But then I still did not know how dearly this truth would cost everyone.

At six in the evening, the police brought us the record taken from the hospital archive. The camera showed Eric standing at the registration desk in the morning. He was holding a copy of Sophie’s folder. Beside him stood a private investigator, a man I had never met before.

“This is the person who requested the record,” the police officer said.

Eric clasped his hands on the chair.

“I only wanted to help.”

“Help with what?” I asked.

He looked away from me.

His phone gave the answer. A message appeared on the screen: “If the hormone result is positive, custody will remain with you.”

Silence fell in the room.

!!!  After the accident, my husband demanded my signature, but when the investigator appeared in the room, Victoria’s smile disappeared

“Who wrote to you?” the police officer asked.

Eric shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

But Daniel recognized the number of the message.

“It is his lawyer’s number.”

That same night the lawyer called and told Eric that he no longer represented him. Before that, cameras that had arrived at the hospital were already everywhere. Eric wanted to present himself as a frightened father, but the recordings showed something else: how for a week he had repeated to Sophie that if she remained with her mother and Daniel, “shame would fall on everyone.”

The next morning, before Sophie was taken into the operating room, the police put handcuffs on Eric.

“I only wanted my child!” he shouted.

Sophie closed her eyes.

I stood in front of him.

“Your child asked you to believe her. But you turned her fear into a weapon.”

For the first time Eric heard his own voice from someone else’s phone. Daniel played the recording in a small room in the corridor.

“If you do not say that Daniel frightened you, you will not see your mother anymore.”

Eric hid his head in his hands.

“I did not say that.”

The recording played again.

“Dad, please stop.”

Then his own answer was heard:

“Your mother will not believe you anyway.”

Everyone in the room fell silent.

Eric slowly raised his head.

“I… do not remember it that way.”

“That is exactly the problem,” I said. “You repeated it so many times, blaming someone else, that in the end you could no longer recognize yourself.”

The surgery lasted four hours.

Four hours during which I counted the same gray tile on the corridor floor twenty-eight times.

When Doctor Lena came out, her mask was lowered.

“We removed the growth. Sophie is now under intensive observation. The first signs are good.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

I leaned against the wall and sat down on a chair for the first time that day.

“Will the hormone disappear?” I asked.

“Gradually. The headaches should also ease.”

Sophie woke in the evening.

“I don’t have a baby, do I?” was her first question.

“No,” I told her. “You were sick, and now you will get better.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Le dije a Adrián Moretti que me marchaba, pero al ver aquella carta su rostro perdió todo color

“Daniel?”

“He is here.”

Daniel went to the bed.

“Your rabbit was left in the car.”

Sophie smiled weakly.

“Did you bring it again?”

“Of course.”

The little plush rabbit was lying in her room, stitched with yellow thread on one ear. I had sewn it for her when Sophie was six, when she lost it for the first time. This time it needed a new stitch on the ear because Daniel crushed it in the bag when bringing it to the hospital.

Three days later we learned from the social worker that charges of pressure on a child, threats, and forgery of a medical document had been filed in Eric’s case. The private investigator also admitted that Eric’s lawyer had instructed him to obtain the old record. They wanted to use the positive test to win custody and remove Daniel from the house.

But their own words destroyed their plan.

I did not go to court to punish him. I went only to say that now the doctors, I, and Sophie herself must listen to Sophie’s decisions.

The judge temporarily prohibited Eric from direct contact with the child. Supervised visits were offered to him, but during the first two months he came to none.

Instead, he called every evening.

During the first week I did not answer the call.

During the second week Sophie asked me:

“Is he still calling?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want us to answer?”

“You decide.”

She thought for a while.

“Not yet.”

It was the first decision she made without fear.

Six weeks later Sophie returned to school. Her hair had thinned slightly, but it was growing again. In the morning I walked her to the bus, and in the evening at the kitchen table I listened to her tell me little stories about her classmates.

Daniel found a job on the other side of the city and turned on the coffee machine every morning, as if this were an ordinary life. We hung a new whiteboard at home. On it Sophie wrote the times for medicines, doctor’s visits, and one large red letter: “My head does not hurt today.”

!!!  Meine Eltern nahmen unser Kinderwunsch-Geld und verspotteten mich – doch auf der Babyparty meiner Schwester wurde mein Vater plötzlich kreidebleich

Three months later the first snow came.

Sophie drew a little rabbit on the window. She painted one ear yellow.

That evening I received a message from Eric: “Now I understand everything. I made a mistake. Please, let us be a family again.”

I read the words several times.

Before, I would have called immediately after such a letter. I would have calmed him. Explained. Tried to make carrying his guilt easier for him.

This time I wrote only one answer:

“A family is where a child is not afraid to tell the truth. Now we need peace.”

Then I locked the phone.

Sophie entered the room holding her yellow-eared rabbit.

“Mom, can we leave this beside my bed?”

“Yes.”

“What if I dream about the hospital again?”

“Then we will wake up and be here.”

She nodded, lay down, and hugged the toy to her chest.

And I sat beside her bed, looked at the snow falling on the window, and realized for the first time that surviving had not only been the removal of the tumor.

Sometimes surviving means no longer believing the person who uses your fear as his own weapon.

The yellow thread shone in the moonlight.

Sophie slept peacefully.
