Two hours earlier, Sophie had been sitting between Daniel and me in the emergency department, swinging her legs. An adult blood-pressure cuff hung so loosely on her thin arm that it looked like someone else’s thing. A small spot of green paint remained on the white toe of her shoe. She had been drawing at school in the morning, then felt sick in math class and collided with the lockers.
For six weeks, she had been suffering from headaches. At first they began only after school, then they woke her until dawn. During the last month, her body had also changed strangely. Her breasts had developed earlier than those of her peers, and I had attributed this only to early growth.
“Doctor, maybe she is simply overtired?” I asked Lena Ortiz in the corridor at ten fifteen in the morning.
“Headache and vomiting together must not be ignored,” she answered. “We will take a blood test and a urine sample.”
Sophie extended her hand to me.
“Mom, will we be here long?”
“No, sweetheart. We will go home soon.”
I said this lie so easily that I became frightened immediately.
Twenty minutes later, the doctor returned to the room. Until then she had had a calm face, but now the corner of her lip was tense.
“Mrs. Morgan, may I speak with you separately?”
“Say it in front of Daniel,” I answered.
The doctor looked at my husband. Daniel immediately stood up, kissed Sophie on the forehead, and went toward the door, but the girl wrapped her fingers around his hand.
“Don’t go.”
“I’ll be behind the door, little one.”
As soon as the door closed, the doctor moved a chair closer to the bed.
“Sophie, I will ask you several uncomfortable questions. You are not guilty of anything.”
“What questions?”
“Has anyone ever touched you under your clothes?”
Her legs stopped.
“No.”
“Has anyone ever told you to keep this secret?”
“No.”
My heart struck hard in my chest.
“Why are you asking this?”
The doctor hid the computer screen from Sophie.
“The urine pregnancy test is positive.”
For several seconds, only the sound of the air conditioner could be heard. Then I laughed. Not because it was funny. Simply, these words made no sense.
“She is ten years old.”
“I know.”
“She still sleeps with a plush rabbit.”
“It may be an error. We will check it with a blood test.”
Sophie turned pale.
“Mom, will I have a baby?”
I embraced her.
“No. They mixed something up.”
At that same moment, the hospital rules called in a social worker and Sophie’s biological father, Eric. Daniel was no longer allowed to return to the room. Half an hour later Eric rushed into the corridor. A security guard followed behind him.
“What happened?” he shouted.
Daniel raised his hands.
“Listen to the doctor.”
Eric saw Sophie crying behind the glass, then the social worker, and finally looked at Daniel.
“You live in the same house with her,” he said.
Daniel stepped back as if he had been struck in the face.
“I have never touched Sophie.”
Eric pointed directly at him.
“Arrest him!”
Security blocked the way, but Sophie had already heard. She ran toward the door.
“Dad, stop! Daniel did nothing wrong!”
I placed both hands on the glass, although my fingers were trembling. At that moment I realized that I could no longer protect my daughter not only from illness, but also from adults’ fear.
Doctor Lena came in again. She was holding a printed report. I searched for relief in her eyes.
“The second test is negative, right?” I asked.
She did not answer me.
“We checked the blood twice.”
Sophie shook her head.
“I have not kissed anyone.”
“I believe you,” the doctor told her.
Outside, Eric was still shouting, while Daniel stood motionless, as if a verdict had already been pronounced on him.
“The hormone level is high,” the doctor said quietly. “We urgently need an ultrasound examination.”
“To see the baby?” I barely asked.
The doctor first looked at Sophie, then at me. She opened the door, took the examination order from the nurse, and returned. Her hand went toward the folder, exactly toward the folder on which, next to Sophie’s name, there was a red mark…
The doctor opened the folder, but she did not read the result to us yet.
“We will leave Sophie here. Maya, you will come in too. Daniel will remain in the corridor.”
“Why?” he asked.
“This is for protection, not accusation.”
Eric gave a bitter laugh.
“It is already too late. I am waiting for the police.”
I stood in front of him.
“Do not frighten my child.”
“I am the father!”
“Then believe her when she says Daniel did nothing wrong.”
Sophie squeezed my hand. Her fingers were cold as ice.
In the examination room they put the machine’s gel on her abdomen. On the screen only black and white spots moved. The doctor was silent for a long time.
“There is no pregnancy embryo visible here,” she said.
My knees gave way.
“Then why is the test positive?”
The doctor did not answer. She asked Sophie about her headaches, blurred vision, and morning vomiting. Then she picked up the phone.
“A neurological examination must be performed immediately.”
The door opened in the corridor. A woman in a police uniform entered and stood beside Eric. Daniel looked toward me, but this time there was no fear in his eyes. He wanted to say something.
“Maya, there is a recording on my phone that I have not let anyone listen to until now.”
“What recording?”
He handed me the screen. When the recording began, I heard Sophie’s voice, very quiet and frightened:
“Dad, please don’t call Mom…”
Then Eric’s voice sounded. And I realized that this story had not begun at the hospital…
Daniel’s phone slipped from my hand, but it did not reach the floor. He caught it.
“This was recorded yesterday evening,” he told me. “Sophie came into the kitchen with me. She told me Eric was forcing her to say that something was happening in the house.”
Eric froze at the door.
“That is a lie!”
The policewoman turned toward him.
“No one has accused you yet. But now all of you will be quiet.”
Sophie clung to my arm.
“Mom, Dad told me that if I did not accuse Daniel, he would take you away from me.”
The color disappeared from Eric’s face.
“I only wanted you to be with me.”
“You frightened a child for that?” I asked.
He could not answer me.
Doctor Lena stopped the conversation.
“Sophie is the main thing now. The hormone found in the blood is real, but the ultrasound does not confirm a pregnancy. Together with the headaches and early development, this points to another cause.”
Sophie stared at the operating-room light.
“Am I sick?”
“We do not know yet,” the doctor told her. “But we will find the answer.”
Brain imaging was performed at five in the evening. I stood behind the glass as Sophie’s small body was slid into the machine. Daniel stood beside me, still holding that phone. A police officer was speaking with Eric farther away.
Half an hour later Doctor Lena came out. She was holding new images.
“Sophie has a small growth in her brain,” she said. “This type of growth can rarely produce the pregnancy hormone.”
I leaned against the wall.
“So there is no baby?”
“No. Sophie is not pregnant. The positive test told the truth about the hormone, but the cause of the hormone is a tumor.”
Daniel lowered his eyes. Eric grabbed the chair.
“Will she survive?” he asked me.
“Treatment is possible. We found it in time.”
Sophie smiled weakly at the doctor.
“I won’t lose my hair?”
“It may change a little, but it will grow back.”
For the first time that day, I smiled too, although tears were coming.
Then the doctor took out a second sheet.
“But there is one more problem. This growth has been growing during the last months. Surgery is needed tomorrow.”
Eric raised his head.
“I will sign the consent.”
The social worker answered calmly:
“No. At this stage your authority is suspended, because there is a recording of pressure on the child.”
Eric looked toward me.
“Maya, don’t sacrifice me.”
I stood in front of him and for the first time I was no longer trying to calm his fear.
“I am not sacrificing you, Eric. It is simply that others will hear what you said.”
At that same moment, a message arrived on Daniel’s phone from an unknown number. He opened it, read it, and his face changed.
“What is it?” I asked.
“The clinic is calling me. Someone requested Sophie’s old medical record this morning and signed with my name.”
New fear appeared in his eyes.
“Maya, this is no longer only Eric’s matter…”
