Part 4 — The Husband Humiliated Me in His Own Home When I Stopped His Daughter, but Robert Froze in Place at Paige’s Screaming in the Morning

For several seconds after the lawyer’s last words, no one moved.

Only the hum of the refrigerator could be heard.

For the first time Robert could not think of what to say.

“Claire, give me the phone,” he said at last.

“No.”

“This is a family matter.”

“No. This is a legal matter.”

He ran his hands through his hair. A few minutes earlier he was still certain that a loud tone would return everything to its old place. Now his usual confidence was peeling from his face like paint.

Paige stood by the window.

“Dad, what document did she mention?”

Robert did not even look toward her.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

“You did not pay my tuition?”

“I was doing everything for the family.”

“That was not my question.”

He could not answer.

The lawyer, Ms. Harris, called me again in ten minutes. She told me that the bank had stopped the document submitted by Robert because my signature had been digitally transferred and the verification did not match.

Robert saw the message in my eyes.

“Claire, let’s talk calmly.”

“I spoke calmly yesterday too. You told everyone that my voice meant nothing.”

“I went too far.”

“Only in words?”

He lowered his head.

Paige slowly looked at us.

“I did not know.”

“Now you know,” I told her.

“And you paid all this time?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

This question hurt me more than her mockery the previous day.

“Because I was not playing at being your mother. I wanted your father to be responsible for what he himself promised you.”

At that moment Robert’s phone rang. His lawyer’s name appeared on the screen. He tried to leave the room.

“Answer it right here,” I told him.

“This is my private business.”

“It is not anymore.”

He answered the call.

“Yes?”

The lawyer’s voice could not be heard loudly, but Robert’s face said everything.

“No, you cannot stop the process,” he told him. “I told you everything was under control.”

A pause.

“What do you mean, you no longer represent me?”

!!!  Я оставила в нижнем белье то, чего свекровь совсем не ожидала, а её визг заставил мужа побледнеть

His hand gripped the edge of the table.

As I learned later, the lawyer refused to defend him after seeing the bank documents and the signature issue. Robert no longer had a person who would explain his names and half-truths to others.

That same evening my parents returned. My mother put the suitcase in the hallway and hugged me silently.

“Come home,” she told me.

I looked at Robert.

“No. This time he will leave.”

He said nothing.

The next day at ten in the morning I had his things taken to his brother Michael. Robert stood in the living room while Michael carried out the suitcases.

“You are destroying this,” Robert told me.

“No. I am only no longer covering up what is already broken.”

Three days later I received a temporary protective order from the court to stop the disposal of the property. There was no noisy courtroom, cameras, or people applauding. Only a small room, a wooden table, and the judge’s calm voice.

But the hardest moment came not in court, but a week later.

Robert requested that the recording be played because he said the conversation had been taken out of context. Because he had no lawyer, the judge nevertheless allowed it to be played.

His own voice sounded in the room.

“She is my daughter. You are my wife. The difference is obvious.”

Robert raised his head.

Then came:

“If you don’t like it, you can leave.”

He lowered his eyes.

For the first time he heard his own voice through someone else’s ears.

When the recording ended, there was silence for a long time.

“I don’t speak like that,” he said.

“It is your own voice,” the judge answered.

Robert dropped his hands onto the chair. I no longer felt victory. Only the emptiness that I had filled in his place for years.

Six weeks later his room on the upper floor of the house was empty. On the wall of the wardrobe there remained only one small square where a picture had hung. I took the picture, but a small nail mark remained on the wall.

!!!  Ich finanzierte die Hochzeit meines Sohnes, doch seine Braut verbannte mich vor zweihundert Gästen – dann hörte der Verwalter auf zu lächeln

And in the drawer of the table I found the thing that had been beside me from the beginning—the silver measuring spoon with my grandmother’s initials. Robert had accidentally put it in the drawer when he went into the kitchen that night after the cake.

I picked up the spoon and looked at it for a long time.

That evening I thought it was simply a kitchen utensil. Now I knew that right beside it I had made the decision that changed my life.

Paige came a few weeks later.

It was Saturday morning. Snow was falling for the first time, and white flakes were melting on the windowsill.

She knocked on the door twice.

“May I come in?”

“Yes.”

Paige was holding a small paper bag.

“I didn’t bring anything from Dad,” she said immediately. “I bought this myself.”

She took a small lemon cake out of the bag. Its surface was slightly cracked.

“I baked it for the first time,” she said. “I don’t know whether it turned out well.”

I cut off a piece and tasted it.

It was too sour. But I did not say that.

“You can make it better,” I told her.

For the first time Paige smiled without making fun of someone else.

“If you help me.”

We stood together in the kitchen. She spilled flour, and I took out my grandmother’s spoon.

“Is this the spoon?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Were you making the cake with it that night too?”

“Yes.”

She lowered her head.

“I’m sorry, Claire.”

I did not answer immediately. An apology could not change the past, but sometimes it gives a person the opportunity not to repeat the same thing in the future.

“Thank you for saying that,” I answered.

“May I come again?”

“If you come too, and not only when you need something.”

“I will come.”

Three months later I started working at a new job in Boston, in the financial-fraud investigation department. It was strange that all day I looked at other people’s hidden numbers and, returning home in the evening, found peace in my own house.

I changed my morning routine. I drank coffee from only one cup. I placed a small lemon tree in a pot by the window. Every week Paige sent me a new recipe, and sometimes a small picture drawn by her own hand.

!!!  Mama mea a susținut că am căzut pe scări, dar când medicul a încuiat ușa, zâmbetul lui Edric a dispărut

In one of them, she and I were standing in the kitchen. A large silver spoon was drawn between us.

Robert contacted me two more times.

The first time he wrote: “Can we start over?”

I did not answer.

The second time he wrote: “Even Paige is no longer on your side.”

This time I wrote only one sentence:

“Paige is not on anyone’s side; she is standing on her own side for the first time.”

The last message came at the end of winter.

“The house was ours anyway.”

I stood by the window. Outside, snow was slowly falling on the street. And on the table lay the silver measuring spoon, already well washed, but my grandmother’s initials were still visible on the handle.

I locked the phone.

I put the spoon back on the shelf.

Then I watered the lemon tree and turned on the kitchen light.

This time I was not waiting for anyone at home.

And still, for the first time, I felt that I was truly at home.

Missed the beginning?
