Part 4 — I Heard the Words Said About Me Before the Wedding, and When I Lifted the Veil, Peter Lost Color

Elena’s words hung in the air.

Peter immediately reached for the phone.

“Who is on the line?”

“The head of the audit,” Elena replied and pulled her hand back. “But he does not want to speak with you.”

“Give me the phone!”

“No.”

That one word was enough for Peter’s control, which he had used all his life, to finally collapse.

First he looked at my father, then at George.

“You all knew?”

George opened his mouth, but could not produce a sound.

“You told me the girl was nothing,” he finally said. “You told me that her family was desperate and that they needed the wedding only to save the company.”

“Shut up,” Peter hissed.

“No, now you shut up,” I told him.

We moved into the back room of the church. The wedding cake still stood on the white tablecloth, with a small glass crown on its top figures. The sweet smell of cream mixed with candle wax and the breathing of tense people.

Elena turned on the call’s speaker.

“Mrs. Müller,” a man’s voice said, “we discovered copies of hidden accounts and records of transfers in the vault. The money has been gradually leaving the company for the last two years.”

Peter leaned against the table.

“That is impossible.”

“The funds went to seven different accounts,” the man continued. “All of them are connected with a consulting firm founded by George Whitmore.”

George pushed his chair back.

“That’s a lie.”

“Your signatures are there,” I said.

“I was only processing the documents!”

“And you sent Peter a report every month,” Elena added.

Peter slowly turned toward George.

“You were stealing from my company?”

George tried to laugh, but his voice broke.

“You yourself told me that everything was yours.”

I saw such astonishment on Peter’s face, as if he had understood for the first time that the people standing beside him were not loyal, but simply used his power.

Then my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

“Hello?”

For several seconds there was silence on the other end.

“Mrs. Müller, a prosecutor from the Federal Investigative Service is calling you. We have a warrant to seize the Strickland Group’s documents. But there is one problem.”

“What problem?”

“Your signature is required on the warrant, because you are the company’s principal owner.”

Peter heard this.

“Don’t sign it!” he shouted. “Adelaide, if you do this, everything will collapse!”

I looked at him.

“No, Peter. Everything has already collapsed. You simply saw it for the first time today.”

The next morning, police cars stood outside the company office. The news quickly spread through the city, but I did not approach a single journalist. I no longer needed to stand before cameras. For the first time in my life, there was no need to shout to defend my name.

Peter called me throughout the night.

At first he was angry.

Then guilty.

Finally frightened.

“Give me only ten minutes,” he told me in a voice message at four in the morning. “I’ll explain everything to you.”

I did not delete the message.

This proved important.

Several days later, a lawyer told me that Peter’s defense was trying to present everything as a “reckless joke said before the wedding.” But the recording existed in full. It contained his laughter, his words, and the moment when he helped George plan my humiliation.

Hearing someone else’s words always affects one differently.

Peter heard this for the first time at the company’s emergency meeting.

About twenty people sat in the hall. A large screen hung on the wall. The recording was played.

“Who would believe such a woman if she said that I humiliated her?”

Peter stared at the screen.

His own voice stood against him.

When the recording ended, he buried his head in his hands.

“This doesn’t look like me,” he said quietly.

!!!  Meine Chefin lud mich zum Abendessen ein, damit sich die Führungskräfte über mich amüsieren konnten – dann verstummte Rodrigo plötzlich

“That is exactly you,” answered one of the board members.

That day Peter resigned. An investigation began against George, while the transfers were fully recovered from the accounts. A difficult period awaited the company, but it was no longer Peter’s toy. I took temporary management and told the employees at the very first meeting:

“I do not want to punish anyone. I want you to make decisions here without fear from now on.”

Six weeks later, I left our wedding house.

The house was enormous, but emotionally not one room in it belonged to me. In the bedroom I left only one thing—a wedding photograph in which Peter stood beside me and smiled as if he still controlled everything.

But I took my silver hairpin with me.

My mother put it into a small wooden box.

“It belonged to your grandmother,” she told me. “It has an ear of grain because a harvest always begins from the earth.”

“And I thought it was simply beautiful.”

“The strongest things often look that way.”

Three months later, I changed cities.

In Berlin I opened a small office and created an independent investment fund for the company’s employees. Every morning I walked to work. I bought coffee at the bakery on the corner, and on Fridays I took my neighbor’s girl, Lena, to drawing lessons.

One evening she handed me a sheet of paper.

“This is you,” she told me.

In the picture, a woman stood in a wide yellow field. A small silver object could be seen in her hair.

“Why did you draw me like this?”

“Because you are no longer hiding.”

I held the sheet in my hands for a long time.

On the first day of winter, I received a letter from Peter.

It was short.

“I understand everything now. If you can ever, meet me at least once. This time I am asking for nothing.”

I put the letter on the windowsill and answered only in the evening.

!!!  Soacra mea mi-a trimis o fotografie cu soțul meu îmbrățișând-o pe soția tatălui lui în patul nostru, dar nu știa că eu puteam urmări fiecare ban furat din fundația familiei

“Peter, you do not want a meeting, but a return to the past. And I no longer live there.”

The next day I no longer saw his car.

I did not miss him either.

Nor did I hate him.

Simply, for the first time I did not want to save him from the consequences he himself had chosen.

Several weeks later, my mother sent me a small wooden box. I took out the hairpin and placed it on my desk, by the window.

Outside, the first snow was falling. Under the streetlamps, the flakes fell like grains of an ear of wheat.

I looked at myself in the mirror.

That day in the church, I lifted the veil so that Peter would see the woman whom he could not humiliate.

But now I was proving nothing to anyone.

The silver ear of grain shone in the light of the snow.

I was no longer hiding.

Missed the beginning?
