Mother Called Me Useless in Front of Everyone at the Wedding, but the Groom Took the Microphone and My Mother’s Smile Suddenly Disappeared

My mother was still holding the microphone when two hundred people began laughing at me, while I clung to the glass of water as if it were the only thing keeping me in my place in that hall.

“My beautiful Vanessa has always been successful,” my mother was saying in front of the stage covered with white roses. “Unlike Claire.”

All eyes turned toward me.

I was sitting alone at the back table, in a simple dark-green dress. The dress had neither a famous label nor glittering stones. I wore only an old copper watch on my left wrist, left to me by my grandmother, whose hands gave a faint click once every hour.

“She is thirty-four, has no husband, and cannot even pay her own rent,” my mother laughed. “Practically useless.”

Laughter covered the hall.

My father covered his mouth with his hand, as if he were coughing, but his shoulders were trembling with laughter. Vanessa looked at the groom’s female friends and whispered something to them. Everyone chuckled at the same time.

And I listened only to the clicking of the watch.

“Claire also offered to help us make the wedding plans,” my mother continued. “She probably thought she could organize a one-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar wedding with things bought from a discount store.”

“Mother, enough,” I said quietly.

“Why? Did the truth hurt you?”

Vanessa lowered her head, but I saw her smile.

Three months earlier, on the fifth floor of this same building, Vanessa had come to my office. She did not know that the office was mine. She thought that only an ordinary administrative employee worked there. She asked the building manager to reserve the hall for the wedding and gave me the wedding-expense accounts as the presumed owner.

That was when I discovered the first discrepancy.

Vanessa’s groom, Daniel, had personally signed off on expenses of almost eighty thousand dollars. Then another seventy thousand dollars had been transferred from an account connected to his company. Daniel’s digital signature stood on the contracts, but according to his lawyer, he had never seen those documents.

That same night I found a message from Vanessa to my mother.

“Daniel is rich. After the wedding, all of this will be ours anyway.”

I did not get angry.

I felt something worse—the emptiness that appears when you realize that the people you called family consider your silence a weakness.

That morning I anonymously sent all the accounts, letters, and fake contracts to Daniel’s lawyer. I thought he would speak with Vanessa privately. I wanted this wedding to be stopped quietly, without any humiliation.

But my mother had another plan.

She raised her glass.

“Let us drink to Vanessa’s success and to Claire’s future, which, I hope, will someday resemble a real life.”

This time the laughter was louder.

My fingers froze around the glass of water. Just then Daniel raised his head.

He had been sitting pale all evening, as if he saw something terrible in the wedding cake placed in front of him. Now he slowly stood up.

“Give me the microphone.”

Vanessa looked at him in surprise.

“Daniel, darling, what are you doing?”

Daniel walked toward my mother. My mother smiled nervously and held out the microphone.

“It should be a toast from the groom,” she said.

Daniel took the microphone. Then he looked at Vanessa.

“This wedding is over.”

The hall fell silent.

Vanessa let out a short, artificial laugh.

“Daniel, is this a joke?”

“Look at my face and answer yourself.”

He took folded papers from the inside pocket of his jacket.

My father stood up from his seat.

“There is no need to put on a scene here. Everything can be settled in a private conversation.”

“No, Richard,” Daniel said calmly. “Nothing is private anymore.”

The champagne glass slipped from my mother’s hand. The glass shattered on the marble floor. This time no one laughed.

Daniel unfolded the papers and looked around the hall.

“The case I received from my lawyer an hour ago contains fake contracts, illegal transfers, and funds taken from my company’s account. But the most interesting thing is that whoever sent this material had access to this building’s internal systems.”

His gaze slowly moved toward me.

My mother immediately shouted:

“Do not go to Claire! She is only a poor assistant!”

Daniel stopped at my table. Grandmother’s watch clicked once more.

“Claire,” he said, “the company that owns this building is called Mercer Capital. The lawyers told me that it is your company. So I have one question…”

At Daniel’s last words, such silence fell over the hall that I could even hear a small piece of glass rolling.

“What question?” I asked.

Daniel looked at my mother, father, and Vanessa.

“Do you want security to escort them out, or should we wait for the police?”

Vanessa jumped up from her chair.

“You did this?” she shouted at me. “You sent him everything?”

“I only did what you could not do,” I replied. “I told Daniel the truth.”

“You have always been vindictive,” my father roared.

“No. I simply did not stay silent this time.”

My mother came toward me, and her expensive bracelets struck against one another.

“Tell everyone that this is a lie!”

I stood up. The chair scraped sharply across the floor.

“I do not pay rent, Mother, because I own the apartment you mocked. I own this building too. And ten other properties.”

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

Daniel nodded at me.

“This is still not the worst news,” he said.

His lawyer placed a black folder on the table standing beside the stage. My father rushed toward it, but the head of security blocked his way.

Daniel opened the folder.

“Claire, before the police take these people away, you need to see one page. It explains how everything began eighteen years ago…”

Daniel’s lawyer took a yellowed sheet from the folder and held it straight out toward me. The corner of the paper was folded, and an old bank stamp could be seen on it.

I took the sheet.

On the very first line I saw my own name.

“This is impossible,” I whispered.

My father covered his face with his hands. My mother froze in place, while Vanessa slowly sank into her chair.

“What does it say?” Daniel asked.

I could not make a sound. The lawyer carefully took the sheet from my hand.

“Eighteen years ago, when Claire became an adult, an inheritance amount issued in her name was supposed to be transferred to a separate account. The amount was fifty-two thousand dollars. That money was transferred on the same day into the joint account of Richard and Ellen Mercer.”

“That was your money,” Daniel said quietly.

“We used it for the family,” my mother answered quickly. “Claire understood nothing about money then.”

“But she did not sign it,” said the lawyer. “The signature was forged.”

Someone in the hall exhaled loudly.

My father looked toward me.

“We wanted to protect you.”

“Protect me?” A laugh burst from me, but my eyes burned. “Then why did you tell me that no inheritance existed?”

My mother pressed her lips together.

“Because you could not create anything.”

It was the answer I had waited for over the years, and yet it hurt me the most.

Daniel lowered the microphone.

“There is more,” he said.

The lawyer unfolded a second document. It contained a letter from Vanessa explaining to my mother how they should use my credit history for a joint loan. It was that loan that damaged me at the age of eighteen, and it took me years to repair it.

“That is why I could not rent an apartment,” I said. “That is why you convinced me that I was worth nothing.”

My mother shook her head.

“You survived anyway. You were always too strong.”

For the first time I looked at her as if she were a stranger.

“No, Mother. I simply no longer trusted you.”

Police sirens sounded in the distance. Daniel closed the folder.

“My company will get its money back, and Claire’s company is entitled to compensation for the damage. But now we have received one call that makes all of this even more complicated.”

His phone rang.

He listened, his face changed, and he held the phone out to me.

An unknown woman was breathing on the other end.

“Mrs. Mercer,” she said, “we opened your grandmother’s old safe today. Inside there is a letter intended only for you. And the letter says that you do not know everything about your parents…”
