Part 4 — After the Lease Expired, I Married a Wealthy Old Man, but My Hands Froze at His Lawyer’s Words

The telephone remained in my hand, but for several seconds I could not move.

Only the ticking of the clock could be heard in the room.

“Where is Emily?” I asked.

“On the second floor, with the nanny,” Levan answered. “We must leave immediately.”

“To the station?”

“No. To the police.”

I ran toward the door, but Levan grabbed me by the arm.

“If you go alone, you will do exactly what they expect.”

“They are threatening my child!”

“That is why you must act sensibly.”

He took out his telephone and called three numbers. One was for emergency services, the second for the security company, and the third for the court clerk.

I went up the stairs.

Emily sat by the window and was drawing a black horse. Colored pencils lay beside her.

“Mother, why are you crying?”

I knelt down.

“Because Grandfather left us many things to say.”

“Will he come back again?”

Her question stuck in my heart.

“No, darling. But his truth has returned.”

That evening, police officers came to the house. They listened to the recording of my call and told me that the number belonged to Victor’s security employee.

Victor Hale called me that same night.

“Nino, let us put all this aside,” he said. “The trust is in your daughter’s name, but you will not be able to manage it. I can help you.”

“I do not need help.”

“You understand nothing about business.”

“Richard did not understand how to save his own conscience either. But he still tried.”

He was silent for several seconds.

“Do you think he was a good man?”

“No,” I told him. “I know that he did many things wrong. But now he can no longer escape his own mistakes.”

“If you go to court, you will lose everything.”

“I have already lost my husband. I am no longer afraid of losing the house.”

The next day, the lawyer told me that Victor’s representative would bring a defense witness. It was Dora, Richard’s former secretary, a woman who had said for years that I was deceiving the old man.

One hour before the hearing, Dora entered Levan’s office.

“I will change my statement,” she said.

Levan raised an eyebrow.

“Why?”

Dora placed a small recorder on the table.

“Because I can no longer stand hearing my own voice.”

She turned on the recording.

With my own ears, I heard Victor’s conversation with Dora.

“Tell them that Nino married for money. Tell them that Richard was confused. If necessary, they will take the child away too.”

Then my own voice was heard. It was one of the conversations I had had in Richard’s study, when I thought I was alone.

“I do not want money. I only want Emily to sleep peacefully at night.”

Victor’s voice came on again.

“That is exactly why she is easy to break.”

I lowered my head.

These were not my words, but for the first time I heard what my fear sounded like in someone else’s recording.

“Is this enough?” I asked.

“It is enough for the truth to appear,” Levan told me. “The law will decide the rest.”

Victor entered the courtroom confidently. He wore an expensive suit and had the kind of face that seemed to know the result in advance.

“This woman pursued Richard’s property,” his lawyer said. “She had no right to demand anything in Emily’s name.”

Levan stood up calmly.

“We are not asking for the property. We are asking that the deceased’s will be protected.”

He presented Richard’s confession, the trust documents, the recording, and a doctor’s conclusion confirming that Richard had been fully lucid until his death.

The judge looked at Victor.

“Did you know about this trust?”

“No.”

“Why were you trying to demand its cancellation?”

Victor lost his confidence for the first time.

“Because… it belongs to the family.”

“To the family that left Richard’s son in an orphanage?” I asked.

The courtroom fell silent.

Levan produced Giorgi’s birth record. Richard’s signature was on the document, and beside it was a letter he had never sent to his own son.

“I did not reject you because I did not love you. I rejected you because I was a coward.”

Victor gripped the chair so tightly that his fingers turned white.

The court left the trust in Emily’s name, rejected Victor’s lawsuit, and began an investigation against him for threats and forgery of documents.

I felt nothing that could be called victory.

Only exhaustion.

When I returned home, I entered Richard’s room. His armchair was empty. By the window stood the chessboard, with the last game left unfinished.

The black horse was no longer on the board.

I found it in the box of Emily’s drawings.

Three months later, I rented a small apartment on the other side of the city. In the mornings I worked at the reception desk of a clinic, and in the evenings I helped Emily with mathematics. The trust’s money remained untouched, and for the first time in my life I knew that a roof was not someone else’s charity.

One morning, snow came.

Emily stood by the window and was drawing houses on a sheet of paper.

“Mother, I drew Grandfather’s house,” she told me. “But I left the door open.”

“Why?”

“So that whoever is sad can come in.”

I smiled.

“You look very much like him.”

“Do you miss him too?”

Snowflakes clung to the window.

“Yes,” I told her. “But missing someone no longer means that we must go back.”

Several weeks later, Victor’s lawyer sent me a letter. It said that Victor wanted to apologize and was offering me negotiations.

I read the letter.

Then I called Levan.

“Shall we send a reply?”

!!!  Mi hijo volvió temblando de una cena familiar, pero cuando pregunté dónde había estado, Nathan dejó de sonreír

“What would you like it to say?”

Emily’s drawing hung by the window. In the corner, she had drawn a small black horse.

“Only this: ‘I am no longer the woman you control through fear.’”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

That evening, Emily placed the wooden horse on the shelf. It was an old figure, with teeth marks, a slightly broken ear, and the warmth of Richard’s hand preserved in it.

I ran my hand over it.

Richard once told me that the king must always be protected last.

Then I did not understand that sometimes the most important piece is not the king, but the child herself.

Snow covered the window.

And this time I locked the door from the inside.

Missed the beginning?
