I Went Alone to the Wedding Because My Family Chose My Brother — Two Years Later, When They Heard My Call, My Mother’s Smile Disappeared

On the day of the wedding, my father told me by phone that my brother’s meeting with foreign partners was more important than his coming to me at the altar. The photographer’s camera immediately slipped from his hand when he saw me walking alone down the red carpet. My father had not died. He was not ill either. Simply, my parents and my brother had decided that Emiliano’s career was more valuable than my wedding.

One hundred and twenty guests were waiting for me at an estate near Tequila, Mexico. Bougainvilleas flickered like fire on the walls, mariachi musicians stood silently by the fountain, and in the front row three empty chairs screamed as if my entire childhood were sitting on them.

Coordinator Paulina chased after me before the music began. In her hand she held a small silver marker, which she kept turning nervously.

“Renata, let’s wait another ten minutes.”

I looked at my phone. Nothing. My mother had promised she would come by four o’clock. My father told me, we’ll see how we manage. He had not even read Emiliano’s last message.

Three days earlier I reminded my mother that I could no longer change the wedding date.

“Emiliano has lunch with foreign partners,” she sighed. “You can’t ask him to interfere with his future.”

“Mom, I am getting married.”

“David will understand. Don’t turn everything into a competition.”

It had never been a competition. For that, at least two people had to stand on the same field. In my family, Emiliano ran, and I watched from the stands.

As a child, I won a national drawing competition. My father arrived two hours late because he was watching my brother’s soccer semifinal. At university I won a scholarship to study animation, and my mother asked me whether I should choose a more serious profession. They rented a hall for eighty people for Emiliano’s law degree. When I founded my first creative studio, they sent me only a thumbs-up sign.

The mariachi began to play. I straightened my shoulders and walked alone. Under my white dress I wore a small silver medallion—it looked like a moon I had drawn in childhood, and I always wore it when I was afraid.

“My God, his father didn’t come either?” David’s aunt whispered.

Pain cut through my throat, but I did not stop walking.

David was waiting for me at the altar. His eyes were wet.

“You don’t have to pretend,” he told me.

“If I stop, I will fall apart.”

“Then fall apart with me. Never ask them for a place again.”

While saying the vows, I took a deep breath twice.

“I want a home where no one has to earn a place at the table. Where coming will not be a reward.”

David’s mother, Teresa, did not hide her tears. After the ceremony she hugged me so tightly that my veil caught on her earring.

“From today, if I can help it, you will never enter anywhere alone again,” she told me.

Those words hurt more than the three empty chairs.

In the evening I continued dancing and smiling. When the cake was being cut, the phone came alive. My father’s voice message accidentally played aloud.

“Renata, tell David not to make scenes. Your brother is closing an important deal. We’ll congratulate you later.”

My friend Camila froze.

“We’ll congratulate you later? At your wedding?”

I turned off the phone.

“Never again,” I said.

That night I blocked the family chat for thirty days. Not as punishment. To survive.

Two years passed. My studio, “Southern Compass,” progressed from small advertisements to a major animated series. A platform bought the series, and the production contract brought us three hundred and sixty million pesos. I had not changed. I had simply stopped asking for permission.

I bought a house in Zapopan with David, distributed bonuses to the employees, and, simply because I wanted to, bought a graphite-colored car. I captioned the photo with one sentence: “What once seemed impossible.”

Five days later my mother’s name appeared on the screen. For the first time in two years.

“Renata, you have to come tomorrow. It’s urgent.”

“Did something happen to you or Dad?”

A short silence fell.

“It concerns Emiliano.”

I heard my father’s voice in the background.

“Tell her we need six million.”

I looked at my reflection in the window and understood why they had remembered they had a daughter. But they did not know that a week earlier my accountant had found something concerning Emiliano’s affairs that could destroy the history of their perfect family. The next morning a lawyer stood at my door holding a folder…

At seven in the morning Jimena was already at my house. Coffee steamed on the table, and beside it lay my silver medallion.

“Don’t answer with anger,” she told me. “Give the answer with documents.”

For years I had kept everything: the first rent, the installments for computers, bank transfers. From my father we found only one old letter that he had sent me when I was twenty-four, when I asked him to co-sign a small loan.

“I cannot put my property at risk because of a hobby,” it said.

“This letter will damage them more than a hundred publications,” Jimena said.

That same day we published the accounts and contracts. A few hours later my mother called me.

“You are destroying your family!”

“I am only showing the truth.”

In the evening Emiliano’s wife, Marcela, unexpectedly came to my office. She had no makeup on her face, and in her hand she held a small memory card as if it were her last chance.

“I did not come to ask for money,” she told me.

“Then why did you come?”

She placed the card on the table.

“So that you know that not everyone in this house agreed with him.”

“What is on it?”

Marcela lowered her eyes.

“The messages from the week of your wedding. And today’s plans. Emiliano is asking you for money only so that someone does not discover his secret.”

I opened the first file on the computer. My mother’s message appeared: “Can Dad really not go to Renata?” Then I read Emiliano’s reply, and my heart struck me as if I were standing alone at the altar again…

Emiliano’s message appeared on the screen.

“If they go to Renata’s wedding, she will think that her little celebration is more important than my career. Both of them have to be with me in front of the partners.”

Then I read my mother’s reply: “Renata will somehow always manage.” And my father wrote only this: “You are right. Your future is important first.”

The room became so quiet that I could hear the hum of the computer fan. My fingers grew cold. For two years I had repeated to myself that perhaps they simply could not come. Now I knew: they had not wanted to come. That day they decided to show me where my place was.

“Where did you find all this?” I asked Marcela.

“In an old phone. And now there are new messages too.”

Jimena transferred the files and opened one. Emiliano was writing to my parents: “We have to get six million from Renata before my partner checks the accounts. If she refuses, tell her that abandoning the family is her choice.”

Marcela bit her lip.

“Yesterday he tried to mortgage my parents’ house. He did not tell me. I will no longer cover for him.”

“Why are you giving this to me?” I asked.

“Because all your life they convinced you that you were heartless. In reality, he was the one who had everything and still wanted more.”

!!!  Llevé a mi hija con fiebre al hospital y el médico me preguntó algo que hizo temblar sus manos

Jimena told me that the money was not needed for an ordinary debt. Emiliano had transferred money from project accounts at the law firm and covered the shortage with temporary loans. Six million bought only several weeks of time.

“If we give this to his partners, they will begin an investigation,” Jimena said.

“And if we don’t give it?”

“He will blame someone else again.”

That same evening we sent the documents to one of the firm’s partners. The next day Emiliano called me.

“What did you do?”

“You asked me for money. Now I know what for.”

“Family helps family, Renata!”

“Family comes to the wedding. Family does not hide the truth.”

“You were always jealous.”

“No. I just am not protecting you for the first time.”

I ended the call. A few minutes later Jimena’s phone rang. Her face changed.

“The firm has temporarily removed Emiliano from his position. An audit has begun.”

I did not feel relief. Only one question remained: what would my parents do now, when their favorite child no longer needed saving? The answer came that same night. My father called me and said in a hoarse voice:

“You still don’t know who you have gone against. Tomorrow I will tell you everything…”
