On the Evening of Our Anniversary, I Publicly Auctioned Off My Husband, but When My Friend Put the Money on the Table, His Face Suddenly Turned Pale

At the moment when I sold my husband publicly, such silence fell over the hall that it seemed as if everyone had stopped breathing at once. I still held a champagne glass in my hand, and my red lipstick was perfectly applied, but Ethan looked at me as if he had seen my real face for the first time.

The evening was being held in the closed hall of Vale House. We were celebrating six years of marriage. Golden forks gleamed on the black tablecloth, candles burned, and by the wall stood menu cards whose edges were embossed with small purple spots. It was the color of our wedding.

The guests thought we were celebrating love.

They did not know that for months I had been humiliating my husband in front of everyone. In the group of friends I called him “a replaceable person.” At brunch I said he was the most boring man I had ever met. When Ethan did the shopping, paid the bills on time, and knew exactly what kind of coffee I wanted after a tense meeting, I called it not care but dullness.

Once, six years earlier, my father had forgotten my birthday. But Ethan walked across half the city in the rain to bring a small, slightly crooked cake. In the kitchen he stuck a crumpled candle into the cake and told me:

“Make a wish.”

Then all I wished for was always to be noticed.

Then his love became so quiet that I no longer wished to see it.

My friend Marchi always laughed at my jokes. Tessa smiled quietly. Serena almost never laughed. That evening too, she only touched her glass but did not drink.

Several weeks earlier, in a café, Serena asked me directly:

“Why do you stay with a man whom you clearly do not respect?”

“Because every single woman judges married women,” I answered.

“I am not judging you, Elene. I am warning you.”

Her words irritated me then. Now they were sticking in my throat.

Before dessert Ethan leaned toward me. His fingers moved calmly under the table, but I knew he was nervous.

“Let’s go outside,” he said. “For at least ten minutes.”

“Whatever you have to say, say it here.”

“Elene, please. Whatever you have planned must not happen in front of everyone.”

I smiled at him.

“You have no right to silence my voice just because you do not like it.”

Something changed on his face.

“I am not asking you to be silent. I am asking you for mercy.”

I should have understood that. But I was already getting to my feet.

I raised my glass and looked at the guests.

“Six years have taught me what a woman can live without,” I began in a sweet voice.

Several people smiled.

“I can live without surprises, passion, and a man who warms the room by his arrival. Ethan is loyal like a chair—always there, but rarely interesting.”

Marchi laughed. Ethan’s hand tightened around the glass.

That encouraged me even more.

“So, let us hold an auction. One quiet, well-trained husband. He goes shopping, pays the bills, and almost never talks about emotions. Who wants to make the first offer?”

Silence fell.

Then Serena stood up. Her chair scraped across the floor. She took money from her bag and placed ten banknotes one by one on the black tablecloth.

“I offer a thousand,” she said.

I was still laughing when Serena seized the dark-blue folder lying at the edge of the table. Her fingers touched the clasp and…

The clasp opened.

Serena did not slide the folder toward me. First she looked at Ethan, then at me.

“I am not buying your husband,” she said. “I am answering the price you yourself put on him.”

“How generous,” I laughed. “Single women always want to save married men.”

Ethan stood up. For the first time I saw his empty, calm hands.

“Serena has been telling me the truth for months,” he said.

“Of course. You both wanted this.”

“At first I protected you,” he continued. “I said you were simply joking.”

He took printed messages from the folder. My words were written there: “replaceable,” “spare chair,” “emotional intern.”

Marchi lowered her head. Tessa covered her mouth with her hand.

“It was a joke,” I said.

Graham, standing near the bar, answered me calmly:

“Honesty does not require humiliating one person.”

I looked at Serena.

“You sent him all this?”

“Yes.”

It was one word, but it fell on my skin like fire.

Ethan took another two thousand from his wallet and put it beside the money.

“For freedom,” he said.

“Under what condition?”

His gaze no longer wavered.

“Only one condition: now let everyone hear what you said when you were sure I would never dare answer…”

Ethan put his phone on the table and touched the screen. His voice rang out in the hall—the voice of my husband reading my messages months earlier.

“I keep her only so she will do everything at home.”

It was my own voice.

Then a recording from Marchi’s house played.

“If anyone wants her, I will rent her out. She is too quiet; no one will notice that she is gone.”

Marchi closed her eyes.

“Elene, I did not know you would record this,” she whispered.

“You were laughing,” I answered.

“I thought you were just playing.”

“You were playing too.”

“No,” she said, and for the first time she did not defend me. “You were playing. And we were helping you with our laughter.”

Ethan turned off the recording. Then he took one sheet of paper from the folder. In the upper corner of the paper was a purple stamp, exactly like the one on our wedding menu cards.

“These are not only messages,” Serena said. “Here are your statements, the movement of money, and the letter the lawyer sent you yesterday.”

“What letter?”

Ethan put the sheet in front of me.

“You had been taking money from our joint account for months. I thought you were spending it on yourself. In fact, you were transferring it to Marchi’s brother’s company so they could advertise under my name.”

“It was not only your money.”

“That is precisely why it is under audit.”

Serena added calmly:

“I ordered a financial inspection when I saw how you were trying to place responsibility on him. My company checks these accounts.”

My stomach clenched.

“Who are you to interfere in my marriage?”

“A person who saw in your husband what you no longer looked at.”

!!!  Part 4 — My sister did not invite me to the royal wedding, but when I came to her door dressed in uniform, her smile disappeared

Ethan lowered his eyes. That hurt more than shouting.

“Are you planning to divorce?” I asked.

“I have already started.”

The word fell onto the table.

Tessa began to cry. Marchi went toward the door. Graham took out his phone and called someone.

“Are you calling the police now?” I asked.

“No,” he said. “The lawyer.”

At that moment my phone rang. It was an unknown number. The call repeated a second time. I answered.

“Mrs. Elene,” said a man’s cold voice, “you need to know that the documents obtained in your husband’s name do not concern only a financial matter. The statement signed by you indicates one person whose existence you officially should not know about.”

Every sound in the room disappeared.

“What do you mean?”

The man on the other end of the line exhaled.

“I will come to you tomorrow morning. Until then, do not tell Ethan that we found information about his child…”
