Part 4 — My Husband Stole Christmas from the Family and Announced a Trip to Tokyo with a Lie, but After My Response the Smile Disappeared from His Face

When I read the unknown message, for the first time I felt fear not for myself, but for Harrison.

From upstairs I heard the sound of the child moving in his sleep.

Julian heard that too.

“Who sent it to you?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Give me the phone.”

“Do not take one more step.”

I did not recognize my own voice.

The police officers were knocking at the door. Isabelle stood in the corner, turning her coat button with white fingers. Julian was still trying to feel that he was in control of the situation.

“Elena, you have no idea how far this all goes.”

“That is exactly why I am going to find out everything.”

He reached toward the iron box.

I stepped in front of him.

“Do not touch the box.”

“My personal documents are in there.”

“The key to my mother’s estate is in there.”

Rebecca’s call was still connected.

“Open the door for the police, Elena,” she said. “Now.”

Julian looked into my eyes. For the first time he did not find a word that would convince me.

I opened the door.

Two police officers and one investigator entered. Behind them stood Rebecca, holding a temporary court order.

“Julian Murphy?” the investigator asked.

“Yes.”

“Please step back and put your hands on the table.”

“This is a family misunderstanding.”

“Then explain the misunderstanding to us calmly at the station.”

Julian looked at Rebecca.

“Are you doing this?”

“I am protecting Elena. And you have been preparing against her for years.”

He took out his phone and called someone.

“David, come immediately. Everything has changed.”

The call ended after several seconds.

“My lawyer is on the way,” he said.

“I am no longer your lawyer,” a woman’s voice came from the phone. Julian had accidentally put the call on speaker. “I learned this morning about the transfers. I will not cover up the use of a false power of attorney in my name.”

Julian dropped the phone from his hand.

The police officer took out handcuffs.

But before that, the investigator took the memory device and started the recording.

Julian’s own voice sounded in the room.

“I will take the child and say that she is psychologically unstable.”

Julian slowly turned around.

His face changed. He was no longer listening to my account. For the first time he was hearing his own words through someone else’s ears.

!!!  On the Wedding Night, My Mother-in-Law Threw Me Out of Our Room, but in the Morning My Husband Read the Paper Found on the Bed and Turned Pale

“This is cut out of context,” he whispered.

“No,” I said. “This is exactly who you hid from me.”

The recording continued.

“Four hundred eighty thousand is only the beginning.”

Isabelle lowered her head and began to cry.

I did not cry. It was as if I had spent my tears during those eight days when I was still waiting for Julian to change.

The investigator collected the folders.

“A forged signature, misappropriation of property, and threats. The rest will be established by examination.”

Julian held out his hands.

“Elena, do not take Harrison away from me. Please.”

“I am not taking him from you. You yourself used our child as a weapon.”

The handcuffs locked.

At that same moment Rebecca’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and lost color.

“What happened?” I asked.

She showed me the message. The money had not gone to a foreign account, but to an account opened in Harrison’s name. The account had been created with the child’s guardianship documents, but the authorization needed to withdraw the money was still held by Julian.

“If he had managed it by this morning, he would have taken everything,” Rebecca said.

Julian was being led toward the door when he suddenly stopped.

“Elena, there is one more thing you do not know.”

The investigator grabbed him by the shoulder.

“You will say nothing now.”

But I already knew that the truth was not yet finished.

That night I entered Harrison’s room. My husband had installed a small camera beside the child’s bed. The message I received had been sent from the camera’s live feed.

The room was visible on the screen.

However, the photograph had not been sent from Julian’s phone.

Rebecca traced it. The message had been sent from the same company account where my mother’s money was held. The company director was listed as another person—the one who had helped Julian for years.

It was his older brother, David.

David himself called the police station at two o’clock at night.

“Julian was not acting alone,” he said. “And if you want, I will tell you everything.”

The next morning we received another audio recording. David had received a message from Julian five minutes before the arrest.

“If I fall, take Elena down with me too. We must get the child back.”

!!!  Part 4 — I Was a Billionaire and Was Testing a Child in My Own House, but His Unexpected Gesture Took the Breath Away from Security

This time there was no way back.

David agreed to testify. The company opened its banking operations. It turned out that Julian was not only stealing my mother’s estate, but was also using it to cover other people’s debts. The case against Isabelle’s brother had been fabricated so that he would remain silent.

Three weeks later the judge prohibited Julian from approaching me and Harrison. In the courtroom he no longer shouted and no longer tried to prove his version.

He was silent.

When the defense said that I was overly emotional, Rebecca played the recording.

Julian’s voice sounded throughout the courtroom.

“I will take the child and say that she is psychologically unstable.”

This time even his own lawyer lowered her eyes.

Julian hid his face in his hands.

I did not look toward him.

Justice was not loud. Nobody applauded. I only felt that for the first time I no longer had to justify myself.

I sold our house a few days later. We took all the folders from Julian’s office. I left the safe empty.

His closet proved more painful.

Only one thing remained there—the black leather glove that I had held in my hand on Christmas morning. The other was missing. Perhaps it had remained in the car, or he had dropped it somewhere on the road to Aspen.

Harrison stood at the door.

“When will Daddy come back?”

I dropped to my knees.

“Daddy will not be able to come for a long time, darling.”

“Is he a bad boy?”

“I don’t know what to call him. But what he did was bad.”

The child thought for a while.

“Will you be here?”

“Always.”

He rested his head on my shoulder.

It was the only promise I knew exactly how to keep.

Five months later we were living in a small apartment in a seaside city. In the morning I took Harrison to kindergarten, and in the afternoon I worked at Rebecca’s office organizing documents. For the first time in my life I controlled the money myself and was not afraid that someone would try to use it against me.

Harrison acquired a new habit. Every week he drew a house that had two doors.

“This door is for you,” he would tell me.

“The second one?”

“For me. Whoever behaves badly cannot come in.”

One evening the first snow came. I stood by the window watching its white trace when I received a letter from Julian.

!!!  When My Friend Sent Me a Photo Hugging My Husband, and I Congratulated Her Publicly — the Next Morning Her Mother-in-Law Turned Pale

“I have changed. Meet me just once. For Harrison.”

Below it was written one sentence:

“You are still my family.”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time. I felt neither anger nor victory. Only tiredness.

I called Rebecca.

“Should I answer?”

“Only if you want to.”

Harrison’s fingerprints were visible on the window glass. He had left a small truck outside in the snow.

I wrote to Julian:

“Harrison needs peace. And I am no longer going to save the person who deliberately destroyed my trust. Meetings will be only according to the procedure established by the court.”

Then I deleted the message and put the phone on the table.

Harrison entered the room holding a piece of paper.

“Mom, I drew a new house.”

There was a large window, two doors, and three people standing apart from one another in the drawing. I was in the middle. I had both doors open.

The key to the old house was still in my bag. A small copper plate hung from it, bearing our old address. That night I placed it on the shelf, beside the black leather glove.

One glove.

One key.

Two things that once meant waiting for a return.

Now they only reminded me that the door was in my hands.

Harrison took my hand.

“Shall we go, Mom?”

The first snow was quietly falling on the city outside the window.

I locked the door.

And this time I waited for no one.

Missed the beginning?
