When I saw the photo of my best friend hugging my husband, I understood at that very moment that their secret was bigger than infidelity.
In the picture, Sara was clinging to Daniel by the sea. The sunset behind them painted the sky copper, while Sara’s fingers rested on my husband’s neck as if this place had been meant for her for years. Three seconds later, a second message arrived.
“Forgive me, Emily, my finger slipped accidentally!”
I stared at the phone for a long time. I did not cry. My hands did not tremble either. I only laughed.
“It’s nothing,” I wrote back. “You sent me exactly the material I needed.”
I saved the picture and published it on my page: “Congratulations to my husband on finding a new love. Congratulations to my best friend on the promotion she fought for so long. To celebrate, tomorrow I will raffle a new phone.”
Then I turned off the phone and, for the first time in three years, slept peacefully.
I woke up in a small hotel room in the morning. It was seven o’clock. It took almost two minutes to turn on the phone. I found one hundred and eighty missed calls.
The first was from my mother.
“Emily, where are you? Daniel’s mother is standing at our house, the whole family is with her. She is shouting that you stole money!”
“Don’t open the door.”
“She says your father is a fraud and that you emptied Daniel’s accounts!”
I went to the window. Below, cars wet from the rain were shining.
“That account is only in my name, Mom. It is my salary, bonuses, and savings. I did not take a single cent of their money.”
“But what is happening?”
“A family problem. Nothing more.”
Then Daniel called me. At first he threatened me.
“Delete this post immediately! You are destroying my career!”
After a few minutes, his tone changed.
“Darling, you misunderstood everything. It was a company outing. There is nothing between Sara and me. Come home.”
Threats, tenderness, guilt, promises. Daniel’s old manual.
Sara sent me a voice message.
“Emily, you cannot destroy a marriage because of one photo. Everyone knew we were joking. Daniel’s career could be damaged…”
I did not listen to the message to the end.
I opened the wardrobe. There I found only the clothes Daniel called “feminine clothing.” I packed everything into bags. Down below I found a dark green suit that I had bought three years ago and had never worn. The tailor’s small copper needle was still stuck in the sleeve loop. I pricked my finger, but I did not pull out the needle.
For the first time in the mirror, I saw a woman who was no longer convenient for everyone.
Daniel did not know that at the company I was not a quiet engineer, but the chief inspector of his technical systems. He also did not know that for two years I had been collecting suspicious contracts оформed under his signature.
I entered the password into an old computer that had never been connected to the internet. A folder appeared on the screen: “Eclipse.”
Inside were letters, bank transfers, falsified invoices, and one contract under which Daniel’s signature stood. Beside it was Sara’s signature.
The clock showed eight twelve. At nine o’clock the most important meeting of the board of directors was beginning.
Daniel thought that in the morning they would ask him to explain only one photograph.
I arrived at the company building at eight forty-seven. The glass doors let me through silently. The employee standing at reception immediately looked away.
The elevator doors were closing when someone slipped in a hand. Daniel rushed in, his face tense, and looked at the copper needle caught on the sleeve of my green suit.
“You cannot enter this meeting, Emily,” he said quietly.
“Today I will enter for the first time the place where I should always have been.”
He grabbed me by the wrist.
“If you open that folder, you will have no way back.”
The elevator stopped on the eighteenth floor. Daniel opened the door, and Sara’s lawyer was waiting for us ahead. He was holding a black folder.
“Mrs. Hayes,” he said, “before you show anything, we have a document that changes everything against you.”
The lawyer lifted the lock tongue and reached toward the folder…
The lawyer’s fingers touched the folder’s lock, but I placed my hand on his wrist.
“Look at my document first.”
Daniel clenched his teeth.
“Emily, this is the final warning.”
“No, Daniel. This is the first warning I am giving you.”
We entered the meeting room. Directors sat around the long table. Sara stood by the window and scratched the edge of her phone with her fingernail so that the plastic was turning white.
“She has no right to be here,” she said.
“I am the technical author of the project,” I answered. “And the inspector of every system sold in this company under his signature.”
A heavy silence descended over the room.
The chairman of the company took off his glasses.
“Daniel, what does this mean?”
“My wife is emotionally unstable,” he said quickly. “Yesterday’s photograph affected her.”
I turned on the computer. A table of transfers appeared on the screen. The money was leaving the company account on the same days and returning to Sara’s brother’s firm.
Sara lost color.
“It is only a service fee.”
“Then why did someone change the dates in the archive?” I asked.
Daniel leaned toward me.
“You will leave the room immediately.”
“First you must hear this.”
I turned on the audio recording. Daniel’s voice sounded: “Emily checks everything. If I do not make her sign, we will shift the blame onto her name.”
At the end of the recording came Sara’s whisper.
Daniel leaned against the chair.
“You obtained this illegally!”
“Maybe. But I have one more file that shows who really owns the signature because of which you came here…”
At that moment the director’s phone rang. He looked at the screen and his color changed.
“The police are in front of the building,” he said. “And they have documents issued only in Daniel’s name…”
After the director’s words, it seemed as though the air disappeared from the room. Sara stepped back by the window, while Daniel looked toward me with a gaze I had never seen before.
“Did you accuse me?” he asked.
“I have not told the police anything yet.”
“Then who did?”
I placed the laptop on the table. In the folder were one audio recording, three invoices, and the original contract. The paper of the document had water stains at the edges, because I had hidden it for a couple of weeks in the basement of my old workshop.
The chairman picked up the sheet.
“Are these signatures genuine?”
“Yes,” I answered. “Both of theirs.”
Daniel tried to laugh.
“This contract means nothing. It is a technical appendix.”
“Then read the last clause,” I told him.
He picked up the paper. His eyes ran over the lines.
“It says here that responsibility for all payments…”
“Falls on you and Sara,” I finished. “And not on the company, not on my department, and certainly not on me.”
Sara struck the table with her hand.
“Emily, you hid all this for two years?”
“Because I wanted to know exactly what you were doing.”
“We were not stealing money!” Daniel shouted.
I turned on the audio.
His voice clearly sounded in the room: “First we need Emily’s signature. If anything comes out, we will say that she controlled the financial accounts.”
Daniel raised his head.
“This conversation…”
“It is your voice,” said the chairman.
Sara’s lips opened, but she could not make a sound. Her whisper sounded in the audio: “As long as you have a husband, the responsibility will fall on you.”
The lawyer standing in the corner of the room slowly closed the folder.
“Daniel, I can no longer continue defending you,” he said. “I told you that the documents had to be burned.”
“You are my lawyer!”
“Not from this moment.”
The door opened. Two investigators entered. Daniel pushed back the chair.
“Emily, you will regret this.”
“I already regret trusting you for so long.”
The investigator took the document and turned toward me.
“Mrs. Hayes, did you hand over only these materials to us?”
“No. This is only part of the company.”
“What else exists?”
An unknown number lit up on my phone. After answering the call, I listened silently for several seconds. On the other side was the frightened voice of an elderly man.
“Emily, I am Daniel’s father. Your husband does not know the whole truth. Before his father’s death, he said that because of the money he had turned against you not only in the company, but…”
The call suddenly ended. Immediately a message arrived: “If you take this case to the end, your child will be in danger.”
I was still looking at the phone when Daniel was being led away by the investigators. He did not see the message. But I understood that escaping from Daniel was only the beginning…
