When I Asked My Unemployed Husband to Work, My Mother-in-Law Humiliated Me in Front of Everyone, but Her Smile Disappeared at Mateo’s Words

At the moment when my mother-in-law called me a “bad wife” in front of the whole family, Mateo pushed his chair back so quickly that its wooden legs scraped loudly against the floor.

All this was happening in Guadalajara, at Teresa’s sixty-fifth birthday. It was eight in the evening. A steaming birria stood on the table, lemon slices were arranged on white plates, and dishwashing liquid was still burning on my fingers. I had prepared food for the whole family, even though that morning I had worked nine hours at the clinic.

Teresa extended a platter toward me and said loudly:

“A woman who loves her husband does not force him to distribute food in the streets. My son is a university graduate. He was not born to carry bags on a motorcycle.”

Everyone at the table preferred silence. Arturo was sitting two chairs away from me and running his finger along the rim of his glass. He had a small burn mark on that finger—he had burned it on a motorcycle exhaust the previous week, but even then he had not told his mother that he worked every day.

“He has not had a job for eight months,” I said as calmly as possible. “We have two children, rent, and bills. I work full-time. Until he finds a stable job, it is natural that he should contribute too.”

Teresa struck the platter against the table.

“You are putting pressure on him because you have never learned how to care for a husband.”

Lucia dropped her spoon. Sandra looked at her mother, but immediately lowered her eyes. And I thought that perhaps this time too I would remain silent, as I had remained silent for years so that the children would not lose their grandmother.

But Mateo stood up.

“Grandma, do not speak to Mom like that.”

Teresa looked at him in astonishment.

“Mateo, adults are talking.”

“Adults are talking about Mom, and you are not telling the truth.”

“Sit down, boy.”

Mateo had a small, folded piece of paper in his hand. He had hidden it in his pocket all evening. The sheet had become damp at the corners, probably because he was holding it tightly in his hand. I looked at him and felt a strange fear.

“Mateo, please sit down,” I whispered.

He shook his head.

“No, Mom. Today you should not defend yourself alone.”

Arturo raised his eyes for the first time.

“Mateo, what are you doing?”

“What you should have done.”

The room smelled of dishes and meat, but suddenly I heard only the ticking of the old metal clock on the wall. My heart was beating so hard that it seemed everyone there could hear it.

Mateo unfolded the paper.

“Grandma, Mom is not a bad wife. I know why she forced Dad to work. Because…”

At these words Arturo stood up from his chair and reached a hand toward him. Just then Sandra took a dark-brown folder from her bag and placed it in the middle of the table.

“You should see this first,” she said.

The color gradually disappeared from Teresa’s face. And I realized that Sandra had hidden the existence of this folder for a long time. Her hand slowly moved toward the folder’s clasp, and when her fingers touched the small metal tongue, everyone in the room held their breath…

Sandra’s fingers stopped on the clasp. Arturo immediately walked in front of her.

“You cannot open my things in my mother’s house,” he told her.

“These are not your things,” Sandra answered. “These are the papers you yourself made me hide.”

Teresa was leaning against the chair. The candle wax placed in front of her had spilled onto the table and hardened into a white spot.

“What nonsense are you talking about?” she asked.

Sandra looked toward me.

“Mariana, please do not remain silent anymore.”

I looked at the folder. A date written in my own handwriting was visible on its cover. That date was from three years earlier—the day when I first realized at home that Arturo was no longer simply an unemployed and tired man.

Mateo stood beside his mother.

“Open it,” he said. “Everyone must know.”

Arturo struck the table with his fist.

“This is a family matter!”

“No,” I said, barely recognizing my own voice. “It is a family matter when everyone carries the truth together. Hiding it destroys only one person.”

Sandra opened the clasp. She looked at the first page and immediately fell silent.

“Mariana… he never told you this?”

Arturo’s face changed.

I took one step forward.

“Tell me what is there.”

Sandra took out the paper, but did not manage to read it. My phone rang. The clinic lawyer’s number appeared on the screen.

“Mrs. Mariana,” a voice said, “we received the response to the examination you requested. You alone must know the answer before you tell the others…”

The paper trembled in Sandra’s hand. The lawyer’s voice was still sounding on the phone, but I ended the call. The entire room was already looking at that one sheet.

“Read it,” I told Sandra.

“Mariana, are you sure?”

“For the first time after all these years, I am sure.”

Sandra straightened the paper on the table. A notary’s seal was visible in the upper corner of the paper, and below it was Arturo’s signature. My stomach tightened, because I knew this signature well—with the same hand he signed the children’s school certificates and the rent receipts every month.

Sandra read aloud:

“I, Arturo Mendes Garcia, confirm that during the last three years I deliberately hid part of the money I received from my family. I did not spend the money searching for work. I transferred part of it to my mother’s account so that Mariana would believe that my family was in financial difficulty and needed help.”

Teresa grabbed the chair.

“This is a lie!”

“The signature is yours,” Sandra told Arturo.

Arturo turned toward me.

“Mariana, listen to me. I was only taking the money temporarily. Mother needed medicine.”

Teresa immediately shook her head.

“I did not receive any money from you.”

Such silence fell over the room that I heard the refrigerator motor start in the kitchen.

“Then where did it go?” I asked.

Arturo could not answer.

Sandra took out a second sheet.

“Here are the bank statements. The money was transferred to the same account every month. The account holder is Arturo.”

It was as if I left my body and looked at myself from outside: a woman whose hands smelled of dishwashing liquid, who had paid for everything alone for eight months, while her husband convinced the family that he was being treated unfairly.

Mateo quietly asked me:

!!!  After the birth of three newborns, my mother-in-law took one of the babies, but her smile immediately disappeared at my son’s whisper

“Mom, will they believe you now, at least?”

I wrapped my arms around his shoulders.

“Now it depends on their choice.”

Arturo came over to me.

“I will find a job. I will return everything to you. Just do not destroy this family.”

“I did not destroy the family,” I answered. “I was only trying to get the children out of its ruins.”

At that moment the phone rang again. This time it was the lawyer’s number.

“Mrs. Mariana, we received the answer,” he said as soon as I answered. “Along with the bank records, we discovered one more thing. The loan Arturo took from the clinic should not have had your signature. However, your name is written on the document.”

I looked at Arturo. He immediately lowered his eyes.

“What document are you talking about?” I asked.

The lawyer was silent for a moment.

“The house in which you and the children live. And the worst thing is that tomorrow morning the bank begins its seizure…”
